Advanced: Let’s Talk

Leslie: Jared, what do you know about chameleons? I have to do a report on them for a class. It’s due tomorrow and I haven’t even started writing it.

Jared: Well, maybe I can help you. I’ve heard that, contrary to popular thought, chameleons don’t camouflage themselves by matching the colors of their surroundings.

Leslie: Really? Are you sure about that? I have always heard that they do. I thought that is how they protect themselves from predators.

Jared: I’m not sure, but that could be a myth. However, one of the ways that they protect themselves is by moving very slowly, and swaying back and forth to mimic a leaf blowing in the wind.

Leslie: Who knew! That is really interesting! I have actually seen them walk like this before, but I had no idea why they did it. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Jared: Yes, that’s very true. I learned these things a few months ago while I was watching a TV program about chameleons. Some people think that watching television is a waste of time, but I beg to differ.

Advanced: Reading Comprehension

The majority of small tooth whales are called dolphins. They are mammals of the order Cetacea and the families Plantanistidae and Delphinidae, which include about 50 species. All have a beak-like snout and sharp, conical teeth.

Dolphins are predators and feed on live prey, except when trained otherwise in captivity. Their primary food is fish, mostly herring, mackerel, and sardines.

Because dolphins are highly social and vocalize among themselves with a wide range of sounds, it has been conjectured that they might possess an almost human-like intelligence.

Because of dolphins’ ability to learn and perform complex tasks in captivity and their continuous communication with one another, some investigators have suggested that the animals might be capable of learning a true language and communicating with humans.

dolphins’ natural predator instincts through training, or will they
