Plant and Animal Cells

“A Closer Look”

Page 2: Animal and Plant Cells

What is a cell?

All plants and animals are made up of cells.Cells are the basic unit of all living things.

Cell Parts

Page 4: Animal and Plant Cells

Cell Membrane-

Holds the cell together and lets substances pass in an d out of the cell.

Page 5: Animal and Plant Cells

Cell Wall-

Found mainly in plant cells but not in animal cells. It gives a stiff and rigid shape to the cell.

Page 6: Animal and Plant Cells

Chloroplasts-

Are organelles found mainly in plant cells. They contain chlorophyll, a chemical the allows plants to store solar energy.

Page 7: Animal and Plant Cells

Chromosomes-

Are structures inside the cell nucleus that are made up of genes. Genes carry the code for a cell’s traits and activities.

Page 8: Animal and Plant Cells

Cytoplasm-

Watery gel inside of a cell. Many materials are dissolved or suspended in the cytoplasm. Various organelles are found in the cytoplasm.

Page 9: Animal and Plant Cells

Mitochondria-

Are organelles in which energy is released in the form of food.

Page 10: Animal and Plant Cells

Nuclear Membrane-

Allows substances to pass in and out of the nucleus.

Nucleus-

Controls the cells activities

Page 12: Animal and Plant Cells

Vacuoles-

Are spaces in the cytoplasm where food and chemicals are stored.
