WHY?

Page 2: Animal Abuse

My Thesis Statement:Thousands of pets are beaten and hurt every year. People want companionship, and without much thought, they run to the nearest pet store and buy the first puppy, kitten, bird, turtle, or rabbit that catches their eye. They become instantly happy with their choice of friend, but then the dishs gets kicked over, the first accident happens on their twenty thousand dollar carpet, the threads are torn from the couch, or the drapes are shredded. What then? Obviously the answer was never intended to live like this, so only one option remains: to hurt or death. This is the destiny of thousand, perhaps hundreds of thousands of pets lives every year.

What is Animal Abuse?Acts of intentional cruelty are often some of the most disturbing and should be considered signs of serious emotional and physical problems. This type of behavior is often associated with sociopathic behavior and should be taken very seriously.

What is Animal Cruelty? Active cruelty is where a person has caused harm to an animal, and is sometimes referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury). Many times a parent or a partner who is abusive may kill, or threaten to kill, the household pets to the family members into sexual abuse, to remain silent about previous or current abuse, or simply to psychologically torture the victims, flexing their "power".

How does animal abuse affect animal behavior?

Animals may be more hostile and it may be harder to earn their trust. The animal will never be truly inside out drippy happy because they are constantly scared of what is to come. On the flip, the animal, once it gains your trust, will be overly protective and loving towards you. • Animals deserve to be loved, not hurt. They can’t talk like we

can to say stop or not but in their eyes you can tell if they have been hurt.

• Sometime they put their tail between their legs which is a sign that they are scared or have been hurt. Also when all the pain is gone and the abuser is gone as well still in there heart they have to trust the new and safe owners into his world and gene the dogs love into the family.

What are the charges?

This section comprises the relevant North Carolina animal cruelty statutes. The anti-cruelty statute provides that if any person shall maliciously kill, or cause or procure to be killed, any animal by intentional deprivation of necessary sustenance, that person shall be guilty of a Class H felony. If any person shall maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat, disfigure, poison, or kill, or cause or procure to be tortured, mutilated, maimed, cruelly beaten, disfigured, poisoned, or killed, any animal, every such offender shall for every such offense be guilty of a Class H felony. This section also makes promoting or conducting a cock fight a misdemeanor and promoting or conducting a dogfight a felony.

Just some little facts…• Elephants who perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23

hours a day from the time they are babies. • More than 25 million vertebrate animals are used in testing in the United

States each year. When invertebrate animals are thrown into the mix, the estimated number rises to as high as 100 million.

• By 2022, 22% of all species will be extinct if no action is taken. • Dog fighting and cock-fighting are illegal in all 50 states. • Tens of thousands of wild and domesticated horses from the United States are

cruelly slaughtered every year to be used for horse meat in Europe and Asia. Since the last horse slaughter plants in the U.S. were closed in 2007, thousands of horses have been shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

• Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States. A fur coat is pretty cool—for an animal to wear. Eighteen red foxes are killed to make one fox-fur coat, 55 minks to make a mink coat.

Who helps with animal cruelty?-

1. The Animal Liberation Front (ALF)• founded in England in 1976 by animal activist

Ronnie Lee, who had become looking over with the purely legal tactics employed by British hunt sabotage groups. According to its published credo, the ALF "shows direct action against animal abuse in the form of saving and rescuing animals, sometimes through the damage of property.

Who Helps With Animal Cruelty? 2. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)• as committed animal lovers who engage in wacky

advocacy tactics ….Ex. Such as posing to nude protest fur.• In 2004 the nonprofit organization received nearly $30

million in donations supporting its animal rights campaigns.

Who Helps With Animal Cruelty?3. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) • was the first humane society to be

established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world.

• Their place was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866

on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, andmust be protected under the law.

Some ways to prevent animal abuse! Get to know and look out for the animals in your neighborhood. By being aware, you're more likely to notice, for example, that the dog next door who was once hefty has lost weight rapidly (a possible of abuse). Make the call. Without phone calls from concerned citizens who report cruelty in their neighborhoods, we wouldn't know about most instances of animal abuse. It all comes from the public, it all starts with YOU. That's why it's so important to keep your eyes and ears open.
