INTRODUCTION
Born in 1917, Angus Macphee had a long period of union activity ,
mainly in the Prince Rupert area, prior to the formation of th e
Pulp & Paper Workers of Canada in 1963 . He was First Vice -
President of the national organization, 1964-67, and Secretary -
Treasurer, 1968-69 . The organization changed its name to th e
Pulp, Papers and Woodworkers of Canada in 1971 and he becam e
business agent and national board members for Local No . 4 (Princ e
Rupert), 1971-1976 . Angus Macphee served as national President ,
1977-1982 .
His papers includes records relating to the Internationa l
Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers (IBPS & PMO )
Local 708 (Prince Rupert), including Committee of Inquiry an d
Rank and File Movement for Democratic Action, 1953-1967 . Record s
include correspondence, circular letters, clippings, and news -
letters with the International executive and representative an d
other locals relating to autonomy, raiding, negotiations, economics ,
labour research and education, health and safety, dissident movement s
within the International and other topics as well as serials suc h
as The Amplifier, Clean-Upp, The Rebel and Union Democracy i n
Action . Records of the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canad a

material and national executive board minutes, 1963-1970 ,
constitutional matters, 1963-83, and correspondence pertaining t o
national organizing, " bugging " inquiry, certifications and

negotiations, 1965-75 . In addition, Angus Macphee collected a
series of consititutions of the Western Canada Council of Pul p
and Paper Mill Unions, 1958-1964 . Minutes and correspondence o f
the Prince Rupert Labour Council, 1952-1961have also been collecte d
by Macphee as part of his duties .
