Középfokú angol szituációk gyűjteménye kidolgozott

Examiner: My God, János, can you believe this phone bill? Isn't
it outrageous?
You: Oh, my, that is high.
- There must be some mistake, don't you think?
Well, it's possible. Similar problems have come up with my bill
in the past. These things happen. If you really can't imagine how
the bill carne out this way, then you should go to your localphone
center to ask for an itemized bill. If there is some mistake, you
should ask for your moneyback, or else have the amount taken out
ofyour next bill.
That’'s a good idea.
Still, before you do that you might consider asking your
children if they have been making anycalls behind your back.
Sometimes children talk for a very long time when their parents
aren't athome.
Well, I don't think my children would do anything like that.

brother began calling a party line with a higher tariff.
- Why so much?
- Unfortunately, the company was located in Barbados.
- Oh, my …..
It seems that in that country there are no limits to the rate
that you can charge. So it wasinternational call on top of it all.
Hungarian children all call each other through a center in
theCaribbean. Imagine that.
I guess you can’t be too careful these days.
They advertise these party lines in teen magazines, of course,
so one minute of a child'scuriosity can cost you a bundle. If you
make a lot of calIs, try making them late at night, whenthe rates
aren't as high as during work hours. I believe the rates go down at
six, when officesclose, and at ten in the evening. Of course the
night is the cheapest, but you could hardly callanybody then.
You're right, of course.
Not everbody knows this, but if you call America the rates are
the same whenever you call.
That doesn't seem fair.

Examiner: Hello, János, have you heard the news? I'm leaving for
England on Wednesday.
You: That's wonderful, Naomi! How long will you be staying?
Three weeks.
How lucky for you! I wish I was going, too. I'm sure it'll be an
experience you'll never forget.
Actually, I know you spent a month in England, and I was
wondering if you had any adviceabout what I should take with me.
Well, it depends on what you're going to do there. Can youtell me
something about your plans?
Some English friends have invited me to dinner at a fancy
restaurant.
In that case, I think it would be wise to bring your evening
dress. It's likely to be a black-tie affair.You wouldn't want to be
underdressed, and the English put great emphasis on ceremony.
What about my sightseeing around London?
Comfort and convenience are the most important factors here.
Comfortable, durable clothingthat doesn't require ironing would be
the best. Wear comfortable shoes, no high heels orplatform
shoes.
Ah, yes.

And of course there's the famous English weather, which is
pretty unpredictable. Make sureyou've always got either an umbrella
or a slicker in your handbag. Sometimes weeks go bywithout a single
rain-free day, but sometimes the weather clears up for days on
end.
Of course.
- And don't forget to bring along whatever medications you would
ordinarily require: aspirin, astomach remedy, and so on.
You’re right.
- And as soon as you arrive in London, buy one of those maps of
London, not a fold-out map,but a booklet, one that shows all the
streets and their names. There are certain tourist mapsthat aren't
worth the paper that they are printed on.
You have given me a lot of great advice. Thank you very
much.
- My pleasure.

Certainly. Just imagine a cruise on the Danube in beautiful

Are the smaller towns in Hungary nice?
In Visegrád you can go up to the top of a lovely castle, and see
the river winding below you. InEsztergom, you can go all the way to
the top of the basilica's high dome, and look deep intoSlovakia.
That's also on the Danube, so you will have a nice view of that,

You: Well, of course I make it my policy never to intrude on a
family argument, Mr. Kraus.
- You can make an exception in our case.
- Well, it is an interesting problem. I can appreciate your
point of view, but that of your child, aswell. Christmas represents
the most beloved of family traditions. I'm not surprised that you
wishto reward yourself after a hard year's labor. You want the
togetherness that the Christmasseason is supposed to bring. The
decorations that you traditionally use symbolize
thattogetherness.
Exactly!
Many adults use Christmas as a way of being children again. The
smell of the pine needlesreminds us of our childhood, doesn't
it?

You could use an artificial tree, but that just wouldn't be the
same, somehow.
- Then you agree with me!
Well I, ah ... didn't say that exactly. It's just ... I can see
your son's point of view, too. Whycelebrate the season of life by
killing a tree? What about deforestation? Forests are a
preciousresource and many animals depend on them for a place to
live. Sometimes people destroy whole forests to get at a single
rare tree. I think it's preposterous. Criminal.
Really?
But you should inform your son· that, after all, Christmas trees
usually come from tree farms. Imean, they plant trees there for the
purpose of being cut as Christmas trees. They replant
themafterwards.
I told him that already. He says it's the symbolic act of
destruction that he opposes.
Oh. Well, you could always get a living tree.

Yes. You could plant it in your garden after Christmas.

You're absolutely right. But a gift certificate would be even
more practical.
I don't know, that seems awfully impersonal to me. Why not just
give money, then?
People feel obligated to use money for practical things, like
the electricity bill. A gift certificate toa nice store would be
used to buy an object, one they could remember us by.
Hmm ... well, why don't I just make a few kind of cautious

Examiner: Well, that was delicious, János!
You: I'm glad you enjoyed it.
What was it?
It's called chicken paprika.
Don't you think you could give me the recipe, so that we could
try to make it back in England?
Well, my wife usually does the cooking around here, so I'm no
expert. But I can try to tell youthe gist of it, and later
Zsuzsanna can fill in the details.

Fine. I realize you're not a gourmet chef
First, you chop an onion and fry it. When you think it's ready,
sprinkle in some paprika. Do youhave that in England?
Well, I know what it is, of course, but I don't suppose there's
any in my cupboard.
I can get you some here to take back with you. I'm sure it's
cheaper in Hungary anyway.
Thank you, that's very kind of you.
Anyway, once you put in a little paprika, you put in some
chicken pieces - maybe somedrumsticks - and turn them in the oil
until they are covered. They will look red because of thepaprika.
You fry it a little this way until the chicken tums golden brown.
Then you pour in enoughwater to boil the chicken, and cover the
pan. You should simmer it until the chiken is tender.
And what about those little globs of pasta? They are
delicious!
Those little globs of pasta are the hard part. I've never be en
able to cook those successfully -my wife always says they taste
like soap! They really don't have an English name. Perhaps youhave
heard the Italian name: gnocchi.
I've heard of it.
To make them, you need flour, egg, water and salt. And, I think,
a little oil. You should also get aspecial pan with holes in it. My
wife will show it to you. You mix the ingredients in a bowl
andforce the batter trough the holes in that pan I mentioned, into
a big, tall pot of boiling, saltywater. Stir it occasionalIy, and
taste a few to see if they are done after a few minutes. Then
pour

off the excess water.
- It doesn't sound too complicated!
- The only trick is knowing when to stop boiling them.
- I see.
- Oh, and don't forget sour cream. It wouldn't be the same
without that. You should add it to thechicken when it is done
cooking. Or you can add some flour to the sour cream first. If you
canfind any in England. I could only find it in the biggest
supermarkets when I was there.
- Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Anyway, here's the paprika I promised. If it runs out, just
write me and I'll send more.

Külföldi diáklány ismerőse au pair szeretne lenni Angliában.
Öntől kértanácsot.
- Egyetért elképzelésével. Felsorolja ennek a régóta bevált
rendszernek az előnye it. - Megérti aggodalmait is. Ön is hallott
olyan esetekről, amikor nem tartották be amunkaidőre vonatkozó
megállapodást, sőt a házigazda még molesztálta is a lányt. - A
megoldás az, hogy csak ismert, régóta működő ügynökségen keresztül
szabadezt a munkát elvállalni. Ök garantálják a megállapodás
betartását és elintézik az összespapírmunkát (munkavállalási
engedély, egészségbiztositás stb.) is. - Megígéri, hogy össze fogja
hozni egy ismerősévei, aki nemrég tért vissza Angliából,ahol au
pair volt egy évig. Neki nagyon jó tapasztalatai voltak, és
biztosan tud majd adnihasznos tanácsokat.
Examiner: I'm applying to an au pa ir program in England, but
I'm worried about going so farfrom home. But it seems like a good
opportunity. What do you think about this issue?
You: Well, many people go to England as au pair girls every
year. It's safe and there's reallylittle to worry about if you go
through a respectable agent. You can improve your
languageknowledge, and if you get too homesick, you can always come
home. It's also a good way tosee the world and experience another
culture.
- Do you really think I have nothing to lose?
Well, I wouldn't say that exactly. Sometimes the family ask you
to do things that aren't even inyour contract. They might make you
work long hours. One of my friends didn't get enough foodto live on
when she worked in England as an au pair. In the newspaper I even
read about a girlwhose employer had molested her. I'm sure that it
was just a single instance, of course.

- Oh, no. It's not for me then. Even the possibility is too
much.
- Well, if you use a respected established agency, one that has
been around for a long time, itshould be all right. They will make
sure that they keep the terms of your contract. They also willdo
all the paperwork for you. For example, you will need a work permit
and health insurance. These are things that you must have if you
don't want people to take advantage of you.
- I still feel so insecure ....
Perhaps I could introduce you to someone who was in England as
an au pair for a year. Shereally enjoyed it, and I'll bet that she
will be able to give you a lot of good advice.
- Thank you very much.
I'll give her your phone number this evening, and tell her to
give you a ring.
Great. Thank you, good-bye. Good-bye.

have new offers all the time to get people to go down there. As for
a coffee table and bookcase, maybe you should try buying them
second hand.Sometimes you can find used furniture in very good

You might be right about that. What about the upholstery? What
pattern should I choose? Andwhat kind of material would be the
best?
- I'm not sure I can answer that question. It should be
something that will match your carpet andwalls. Something like red
or brown. Nothing too fancy. I would probably choose a solid
colorrather than a pattern.
Why’s that?
- Oh, I guess with a solid color it would be easier to predict
how well it would fit in. With apattern, you never know if it would
look the same at home as it does in the store. We had thesame
experience when we bought our armchairs. There were just too many
colors to predicthow it would go with the sofa we already have.
Hm. You might be right.
Another thing you might think about is a nice floor lamp to
provide a nice atmosphere. It's sodark in here sometimes.

some Italian friends. She told themthat it was not a good idea, but
they really wanted to try. My wife was very carefui, and thepeople
she was dealing with allowed her to hold the money in her hands to
count and inspect it.Everything was all right, but at the last
second, some passers-by passed between them -apparently by
accident, you see. It was a quite narrow passage, and there was no
other way toget by. It was a trick. They managed to substitute the
forints with some other currency -Yugoslavian, I believe. That
currency is worth a lot less than the Hungarian forint. They were
allworking together. Everyone had their eyes on the money, and it
still disappeared. Only the topbill was Hungarian. All the good
money - lire and forints - had been switched to

no doubt that the vaccination isscientifically valid. The only

Well, the basic protection against infection is good physical
condition and a healthy, vitamin-richdiet. Eat regularly,
especially a lot of fruit and vitamin C. Of course, when the virus
is goingaround, it's best to avoid crowds.
Hm.
Getting enough rest is also important. Too many people stay up
late or do a lot of overtime atthe office when there's an epidemic.
They're lowering the effectiveness of their immunesystems. Your
workplace is also a great place for infection, not only because
everyone getstogether in one place, where one person can infect
several, but because the stress of themodern job market makes a lot
of people go to work when they're feeling ill. That just makes
therisk for infection even greater. It's a very irresponsible thing
to do.
Well, I’ll bear that in mind.

What was it like? As far as I know, you can see Anne Hcithaway's

That's right, Shakespeare's wife. I really enjoyed it. It was a
charming English town. We stayedtwo days, and we saw two plays.
There was a kind of protest after the performance ofTWELFTH NIGHT.
They disagreed with how the play was interpreted. Isn't it

Is there anything else that I should make sure to see?

details, of course. But I tookpictures of everything. The
countryside, the buildings. It was all lovely. The theatre was

Oh, really?
Oh, yes. I can tell you from my own experience with my own sons
that it's not really thateffective to send a child abroad until he

achieve much on his first trip to England, when he was only eight.
We went withhim, of course, but he spent most of the day in an

specify the kind of steps that will betaken if the customer is
unsatisfied
I'm perfectly prepared to make things difficult for you, the
hotel, and the travel agency. Shall Iknock on all the rooms to make
sure that they really are occupied? If I can find an empty one,
Iwonder what your bosses would say about that.

There's no need for any of that. I will see what I can do, of
course. I just meant that thecompany can't always guarantee perfect
accomodation in every case.
I thought that was what you meant.
- One mo ment ... ah, yes, I'm back now. Would it be all right
if you were put up in the next hoteldown the road?
- Of course, if that room meets the terms of the agreement.
- Let's go and see together.

Említést tesz a hamisított
benzin miatt tönkrementautókról.

megfogadják,zavartalan útjuk lesz és szép élményekben lesz
részük.
You: You know, guys, I should warn you about the condition of
the roads in my country.
Examiner: Why? I thought that, what with capitalism and all,
they would have been repaired bynow.
Although that might be the case in a few areas, especially where
entirely new motorways arebeing built around Budapest, usually just
the opposite is true.
Really?

Yes, there just isn't enough money to maintain our
infrastructure.
What a pity.
- Another thing that you should watch out for is the crazy
drivers that you might find out there.
- Aren’t Hungarians good drivers?
- It's not a question of Hungarian or not. A lot of Hungarians
are cautious and skillful drivers. Butthe number of cars is
increasing very quickly in our country. A lot of drivers aren't
tooexperienced yet, and a lot of them have be come rich with the
new system, and they are eagerto show everyone that they are
important, and that their cars go fast.
- We’ll bear that in mind.
- Another thing. Always lock your car door, and don't leave
anything in the seat or in plain view ifyou leave your car, even
for a few minutes. Car theft has become very common in Hungary.
- I guess it’s not safe anywhere these days.
Also, don't forget to bring enough money for tolls. They're
pretty high - higher than in mostwestern European countries. I
heard a comparison on the news. You can also count on trafficjams,
if you try to avoid the tolls, as going by alternative routes would
be much slower. Whenyou stop to fill up, make sure that you stop at
one of the big gasoline companies' station. Therewas quite a
scandal a while back about tainted gasoline. It might not only
contain chemicalsharmful to your engine, but objects like iron
particles even nails, I heard.
- My God! Now that I didn’t know.

- A single tankful could min a car's engine.
- I’d imagine so!
- But don't get discouraged. A few simple precautions, and you
should have a lovely trip! I hopeyou'll enjoy yourselves!
- Thanks.

vitorlázás aBalatonon, vízi túra a Dunán és a Tiszán, fallabda,

Examiner: You know, János, I always thought that I would like to
visit Hungary, but sightseeingisn't enough for me. I have a very
aclive sports life, and at my age it's very important not to
fallout of the pattern once you’ve gotten into it.
You: Oh, Keith. There's no cause for worry. You can take part in
whatever sport you want inHungary - except skiing, of course,
because we haven't got too many high mountains or anyfirst class
ski resorts.

Certainly - horseback riding, sailing or windsurfing on Lake
Balaton, kayaking and canoeing onour rivers, squash, indoor and
outdoor tennis, you name it.
- Well, what a pleasant surprise.
- There are other sports like rock-climbing and hang-gliding.
You can even fly a real glider rightin Budapest. A friend of mine
is into parachuting.
- Actually the sport I'm the most worried about is golf. I never
miss a weekend's golf and I visitthe driving rangel at least three
times a week that’s one sport I know you don't have. I read
