Angelos Floros has a BA/MA degree in Architecture from the Department of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Using Erasmus program he extended the under-graduate studies in Barcelona at Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (1996.) At that time he participated as a student at UIA’s Barcelona ‘96 World Conference and as a competitor at UIA’s Student International Competition. His project was sortlisted and exhibited at the Student Competition Exhibition. During that period he had the unique opportunity to work at Enric Miralles Studio (EMBT.) He graduated in 1997 presenting his Thesis: Enclosure in Barcelona in Thessaloniki, under the supervision of Miralles Enric, Papadopoulos Lois and Didaskalou Akis. Many of his projects, such as the Archaeological Museum in Maronia, the Museum of the City of Thessaloniki and his thesis were exhibited in many europeen cities such us Barcelona, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and many others.

He continued his studies in Master Degree in Interactive Telecommunication field in New York city following the Interactive Telecommunication Program (2001-2002), Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. He graduated with a distiction (3.9/4 GPE), having also financial support from Gerondelis Foundation and the three semester financial aid from the New York University (since the 2nd semester up to the end of his studies).

Currently, Angelos Floros is a PhD candidate (final year) of Technical University of Athens. His thesis is investigating the Interface as a key medium that combines the interactive and computational possibilities of programming languages in design process and spatial analysis. Interactive media in combination with socio-environmental studies are giving the ability to observe and research interaction issues in educational, cultural and commercial environments. This approach transforms the human-computer interaction into eventful playgrounds, framing contemporary patterns of interaction in social cultures.

Since 2004, Angelos Floros holds the position of Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Architecture of University of Thessaly. The last 5 years he has a leading position in Interactive Media Field. He is Director of 4 basal and two advanced Digital and Interactive Design Courses. These courses are trying to immerse the students into the field of the hybrid design mediums -analogues and digital- and offer a reliable communication environment for their ideas and projects. Also, he supervised several research projects in Digital and Interactive Technology.

Recently, he designed, edited and published a book, with fellow Adjunct Lecturer Aaron Cohen. The book is written in Greek language trying to fill the gap of the Greek Bibliography in this field. It is entitled Keyboard Events: Architecture and Information, An introduction to Physical Computing trying to imprint the successful academic experiment of the elementary course Keyboard Events (founder of the course). The course introduces to the students an educational method in order to approach the design issues in all steps, from manuscripts to realization. In this course the students of Architecture gain the ability to compose spatial and environmental data with digital technology, able to bridge the physical with the digital world.

His academic expertise gave to him the opportunity to create a worldwide academic educational network, exploring the possibilities of critical interaction design, augmenting it with the opportunities of design imagination. This academic procedure includes seminars, lectures and workshops and it is addressed to a public of an open creative community. The aim is to emerge the interactive design process as a motive in order to enable efforts, to quickly prototype the interactive concepts.

All of these years as a freelance researcher, he participates through the leader position in Visual and Interactive Design -mostly for Exhibitions such as Venice Biennale, Prague Quadriennial, etc.- in collaboration with leading universities, institutions, foundations, museums, publishers, and Greek governmental authorities, such as the Athens Academy, the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, the University of Athens, the Foundation of Hellenic World, the National Archaeological Museum, the Hellenic Ministries of Culture and Education, and many others, framing and developing a plethora of research projects beyond the traditional boundaries of Interactive Media in Urban Cultures. For him, each project, educational, academic, research or professional, is a medium to extend the boundaries of the cognitive modules, embodying social and cultural characteristics in design process. His academic and professional philosophy is to focus in a Research process able to provide: a) a comprehensive glossary for the students, b) a content(ed) ark for clients, and c) a next generation eventful playground (platform) for the society.

The interactive means are gestures and other body interactions and we explore if such interactions can also facilitate meaningful interactions that employ body and mind. We aim to study the physical exploration of concepts and systems by moving within and acting upon an environment. The testbed for such explorations is Polymechanon, an interactive educational gaming centre where visitors can have full-body collaborative experiences during their visit. Visitors interact with virtual and real objects (e.g. joysticks and push buttons) through which they need to accomplish specific goals to win a game. Vimeo video: https://vimeo.com/122189702

Invis-O-Vision consists of a system of full-color projected presentations that would appear on flat surfaces above works of art. Without the specially designed glasses, the visitor would see only a faint patch of light alerting him that additional content is available. (or Without the specially designed glasses, the visitor would see nothing.) The user would wear inexpensive paper or plastic framed glasses with polarized lenses. These would be similar to 3D glasses. The video presentations would include a short biography of the artist, an explanation of the artist’s process and specific quotes and content relating to the work of art it is placed next to.

SCREEN BASED

The identity of the object that exists in the real world is distorted by the binary filter of the digital world. Since the image of the object is captured into the digital media, the image becomes a combination of numbers, which are transformed to pixels on the computer screen. Digital system has power to create and change the image. Finally, the image is no longer the original object, but becomes a new object that has new identity, which is called “Cloned Identity”.

This project introduces ways of representations of a still and live image portraits through the use of digital technology. The experimental process began using two dimensional space and grid of 24X32 pixels. The research was extended using 3-D virtual environment as a canvas of the user’s portrait. A complex of algorithms is a generating machine that captures, analyses, fractalizes and finally constructs the user’s idol.

The idea came from the tesserae portraits of the Byzantine period and the hagiographies. The aim was to create an alternative module through the use of digital and algorithmic technology, a contemporary mosaic using the advantages of the computational power.

This volume is a study of a multimedia application that aims to present and promote Greek antiquities. Also, it describes the activities and the restoration methods of the National Archaeological Museum. The DVD volume includes a plethora of audiovisual material in various formats, such as texts, images, videos, 3D reconstructions, VR spaces, panoramic and 360o views. Applied technologies, such as timelines, maps, encyclopedia, list of entries, notebook, search engine and educational games, functions as useful tools to aid the user to gain an eventful navigation.

This proposal won the 3rd prize and offered to the producer, Erevnites Publication, the ability to develop and produce three DVD volumes: National Archaeological Museum, Epidaurus Museum and Mycenae and Mycenaean Civilisation.

The concept was based on modular creation in order to use the same interface and programming infrastructure for developing multimedia DVD volumes about the Epidaurus Museum and the Mycenaean Museum. The colour palette acts as a structural element differentiating the design of the three museums.

The design methods for these volumes embedded the following rules, creating a design pattern or an order: a) Ambient interface, b) Line based graphics, c) No image based graphics, d) One viewer for all the digital formats, e) One interface for text based embedded apps (font style)

It was crucial to create one player for all digital formats that were included, regardless of what type of material the user wanted to view. Images, videos, QTVRs, etc., had the same player.

Athenian Agora

This is an online museum of the Athenian Agora. The initial concept was to create, 2 ways of seeing, providing 2 gates a) the Urban gate, which is based on the archaeological site of the Athenian Agora, and b) the Museum’s gate.

Through the Urban Gate the user has the opportunity, to see the Athenian Agora Site and their treasures, using Streetview technology along the Panathenian Way. The images of the Streetviews, are based on the historic Archaeological Reconstructions. This method gives the possibility to the user to understand the space of the Athenian Agora and to view the archaeological objects based on location they that had been found.

The Museum Gate is based on Attalos’ Museum Program -the main museum of the Agora- presenting the archaeological objects under chronological division.

The representations were mostly animations, but some of them were made by using interactive 3-D models in a virtual environment.

The representations of such a large number of monuments was collected in 28 volumes, published by DOMI Publications, and delivered to the public as embedded volumes on Sunday’s newspaper “To Vima” for 28 weeks.

The 3-D monuments were included in the virtual space «Cruiser» which was carried out by the IT company TALENT (www.cruiser.gr).

Still Cameras, Camcorders and Projectors

On the occasion, of Photorama project, 20 3-D models of photographic and cinematographic machines, from the 19th century up to our days, were developed.

The models gave to the user the ability to analyse the objects using a rich virtual environment. The user had the ability to examine the models both from the outer and the inner parts, using an orbit camera and viewing animations upon request. These models are precise and detailed copies of the original objects.

The original models belong to the collector Adam Damianakis.

The installation was presented as part of the Diploma Project “Sensorial Apparatus” which was presented in September of 2013 at the Architecture Faculty of AUTH.

Through the study of the neuronal system and the way the nerve fibers function, an exploration of three sensorial systems is selected: haptic, visual and auditory system. The neuronal, muscular and skeletal system is approached in analogy to the mechanical behavior of a specific materiality.

The installation senses the ever changing from the viewers field of stimulation. The embodied sensors perceive light and sound intensities as well as movement variations of thehuman bodies. The data that is imported, is mapped and translated based on a programmed behavior, so as to activate the corresponding actuators. An almost breathing object that transforms according to the “in situ” presence of bodies.

“Arachne” is an interactive weaving system which consists of a DIY loom connected with a computer.

According to the ancient Greek mythology, goddess Athena, protector of wisdom and the arts, gave people the knowledge of weaving. “Arachne”, a young girl who prided herself that she can weave better than the goddess, was punished for her arrogance and disrespect by Athena, who transformed her into a spider and cursed her to continually weave her web. The weaver “Arachne”, which in Greek means “spider”, gave her name to our loom.

“Arachne” is controlled by a computer, through “arduino”, which is connected with 16 motors that pull the warp. The software which is developed in “processing” analyze any image and gives commands for weaving. During the exhibition, the user is able to take a picture of him, which is analyzed in 16x23 black and white pixels. Then the weaving begins.

We believe, that the idea of a DIY loom that works with open source software, can easily be used by anyone under an experimental as well as an educational process.

‘Miracleworker’ is an interactive installation with burlesque kitsch elements that simulates an exaggerated ‘miracle’. The ‘enhanced’ use of the interactive means itself, together with the exuberant installation refer to the human urge for hopping for a miracle, which whenever occurs it is not even disputed. Each participant triggers a sequence of small miracles; simulating the mechanized fortune-teller dolls found in carnivals where by inserting a coin you could learn your future.

Soul Trap is an interactive art project based on the visual communication of the viewer and the installation. Upon entering a confined dark space, the visitor encounters a rather eerie setting with his reflection trapped in a glass cube, mirroring his actions. While leaving, he realizes that he has left a part of him behind; his reflection remaining there, as if the soul has been trapped inside the cube.

“Within a rational world each intangible thing seems distant and utopian. So the souls of men; they live trapped in fictitious cells, constructed by an architect called Mind ”

The facility uses a simple cylindrical structure consisting of several strips, as a reference to human nerves. In the digital world, the representation consider this form as a free grid with multiple control points, thus allowing processing / transformation in real time taking advantage of the new technology leap motion. In the real world this is translated into the ability to control the shape of the user’s hands from two outermost points, using the Arduino board and four servo mechanisms regulating variables such as distance, turning, speed.

Kosmas 500 is a composition of four (4) projects with multidisciplinary characteristics connecting the social, technological and scientific interests to a synergetic model. The students focused beyond the traditional formulas of Human Computer Interaction, reframing and redefining the artificial intelligence of traditional robots, as there are described in Asimov Laws . This project acted as an academic experiment, helping the students to extend the boundaries of their cognitive modules, embodying social and cultural characteristics in design process.

2012 Keyboard Events course proposes the distinction of an interactive architectural installation in a triptych: Rules, Object/ Space, System. This distinction can function as a general principle,a methodology that serves the process of analysis and design.

Rules aid the reading, review and the categorization of the data into information. Potentialy information is able to form the raw material for the definition of the system. The system requires the definition relationships for managing this information, i.e. the rule. The above process is an exploration of the crystallized structure which will operate behind the system, modelling its behaiour and identity. Rules require a writing code that will contain the conditions and the filtering of information. The code is a translation of a system diagram. The chosen tool for implementing the rule was the programming language Processing.

The object or the space is a structure that integrates all the necessary material and technical infrastructure for the operation of the rules. The new constructive detail of the object or space enhances the design of new technological devices, such as sensors, microprocessors, cameras, motors, and other ones, an apparatus through which a bridge between the object / space and the rule will be implemented. The result remains an object / space with physical entity and new properties.

The system is an object and a space that behaves in accordance to the rules. The operating system is the merging of space and information into an integral whole. The Arduino, an open programmable microprocessor that has the ability to control a variety of sensors, was chosen as a tool for implementing interactive systems. The sensors will be the expanded input of the computer, materializing the user connection with the natural world.

The sensors will be the expanded input of the computer, materializing the user connection with the natural world.

The course explores the composition of interactive systems. The goal is to understand the new grades that can provide mechanisms of interactive system in a physical architectural space, relocating the issue of the central idea of the function and the form. Such systems can be expressive tools for the students of architecture helping them to redefine the architecture of physical space. The result is a hybrid that incorporates information in a central position in real space. With the coupling of architectural thinking and space with new technologies, as information carriers, architects investigate the architecture that acquires more parameters and variations. Finally, architecture becomes more complex and multidimensional, more difficult but, definitely more interesting as well.

KEYBOARD EVENTS

Goal of this project is the exploration of the vertical architectural element as a representational machine of sound and motion. The architectural element has been restructured and has being enriched with new properties, by using the software, so as to build a data structure of the social environment. Sensors monitor the environmental soundand the human behaviour in front of the wall. Light boxes reshape the activities and hold a backup of the captured area as an environmental memory stick.

This project was the renovation of the digital Theremin, an audio instrument that senses motion and reforms audio frequencies. The user crosses a dark corridor and enters inside a small dark room with a weak led light. The body’s motion produces psychedelic sound experiences inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s movies. The sound finally tries to discipline the user’s behaviour replacing the role between the transmitter and the receiver.
