COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
Angeli, Helen Rossetti, collectorAngeli-Dennis
collectionca.1803-19644 m of textual records
Helen Rossetti Angeli and Imogene Dennis maintained a collection
of records of theRossetti family and of other noted artists .
William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919) was apre-Raphaelite writer and
an art critic . He also edited the works of his brother,
DanteGabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), and of his sister, Christina
Rossetti (1830-1894). WilliamMichael Rossetti also held duties as a
civil servant with the Excise Branch of the Britishgovernment .
The Angeli-Dennis collection contains the diaries (1855-1913),
manuscripts, financialrecords and correspondence of William Michael
Rossetti . Also included are themanuscripts, correspondence and
financial records of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1842-1882), Christina
Georgina Rossetti (1853-1894), Ford Madox Brown
(1852-1993),Gabriele Rossetti and other members of the Rossetti
family . In addition, the collectionincludes materials of Robert
Browning, Thomas Landseer, William North, AlgernonSwinburne and
James Thomson.
The Angeli-Dennis papers came to the University through two
separate acquisitions fromthe former home ofHelen Rossetti Angeli
at Woodstock, England. Dr . William E.Fredeman acquired the papers
on behalf of the University. The first acquisition in 1966consisted
primarily of papers of William Michael Rossetti . The second
acquisition in1972 resulted in further Rossetti family papers from
Imogene Dennis, Helen RossettiAngeli's daughter. For further
information on the holdings at Woodstock prior to theiracquisition,
see William E. Fredeman, Pre-Raphaelitism A Biblio-critical
Study,Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1965, pp. 55-56.
The collection was handled by researchers interested in the
Pre-Raphaelites prior to thepapers' deposit in the UBC library. No
doubt the provenance of the manuscripts wasdisturbed . Upon their
arrival some of the papers were arbitrarily interfiled on
varioussubjects such as D.G. Rossetti's state of health and his
work, Poems, 1870 .
Also, lettersto William Michael Rossetti were re-arranged from
their chronological order to analphabetical one by aresearcher.
Rather than attempting to reconstruct the papers to theiroriginal
order, the papers were arranged into groups ofRossetti family
members and non-Rossetti family members. For example, the letters
ofRobert Browning and A.C .Swinburne were not returned to Rossetti
family groups to become incoming letters ofDante Gabriel Rossetti,
William Michael Rossetti, etc. A manuscript by William Northwhich
was found in the papers, but seemed to have no relationship to the
family papers, was arranged under a separate group, the William
North papers . The same procedure wasfollowed with the papers of
other non-family members.
