JULIAN MEYRICKDIRECTOR

Julian’s directing credits include Tribes, The Birthday Party, Thom Pain, Enlightenment, The

Ghost Writer, A Single Act, Cruel and Tender, Dinner, The Memory of Water, Blue/Orange and Frozen (Melbourne Theatre Company); October, St. Rose of Lima and Fun and Games with the Oresteia (Griffin Theatre Company); Whiteley’s Incredible Blue and Do Not Go Gentle... (45 Downstairs); The Vertical Hour, Doubt and The Snow Queen (Sydney Theatre Company); Fever and the inaugural production of Who’s Afraid of the Working Class? (Melbourne Workers Theatre). Julian is also Research Fellow at La Trobe University. From 2002 to 2007, he was Associate Director and Literary Advisor at Melbourne Theatre Company – responsible for expanding the Affiliate Writers Scheme and initiating the Hard Lines new play program. As a theatre historian, Julian has published books on Nimrod Theatre and Melbourne Theatre Company, as well as a Currency House Platform Paper, Trapped By the Past, and academic articles on post-war Australian theatre, the theory-practice nexus, and contemporary dramaturgy. He is currently researching a series of case studies from Australian theatre in the post-Whitlam era, focusing on the relationship between cultural policy and creative practice. He was a member of the federal government’s Creative Australia Advisory Group and one-time deputy chair of PlayWriting Australia. He is an honorary fellow at La Trobe and Deakin universities.

HILARY BELLASSOCIATE WRITER

Hilary’s theatre credits include Wolf Lullaby, Fortune, The Falls, The Anatomy Lesson of

Doctor Ruysch, The Bloody Bride, Memmie Le Blanc, The Mysteries: Genesis (with Lally Katz), The White Divers of Broome, Open-Cut and The Splinter. Hilary also writes for radio, film and TV, and her music theatre work encompasses libretti for musicals, song cycles and opera. Hilary is a member of playwrights’ company 7-On and was the 2003-04 Tennessee Williams Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of the South in Tennessee. Hilary is also on State of Play’s artistic directorate and on the artistic advisory panel for the Production Company, New York. She is a recipient of the Philip Parsons Young Playwrights’ Award, Jill Blewitt Playwrights’ Award, Bug’n’Bub Award, Aurealis Award for Fiction, the Eric Kocher Playwrights’ Award, the 2007 Inscription Award and an AWGIE for Music Theatre, and a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Award.

Alister’s theatre credits include Die Winterreise (Malthouse Theatre) and A Little Room (Living

Room Theatre). He leads and composes for the Alister Spence Trio and is a member and composer for Australian Art Orchestra and Wanderlust. He was Producer and Musical Director on the Paul Capsis recordings Everybody Wants to Touch Me and Make Me A King. Alister won an award for Best Original Score for Journey at Edge of the World Film Festival (1998) and has been nominated for Best Original Score for Beneath Clouds at the AFI Awards and Film Critics’ Awards (2002) and Best Australian Jazz Album for Flux and Mercury at the ARIA Awards (2004, 2007).
