The long-awaited wireless data exponential growth is underway: can we handle it?

“The iPhone is just the vanguard, with applications and content growing richer and with ever more sophisticated devices”

According to HSBC, the future sources of additional capacity are:

• More bandwidth (analog TV, new spectrum at 2.3 and 3.4 GHz)

• Offloading onto wireline via femtocells or WiFi.

• Increased cell density, at the expense of: Site procuring (permits, radiation, civil engineering) Network planning Backhaul & other operational expenses

“There is no more low-hanging fruit for the mobile industry in terms of spectral efficiency gains to drive network capacity”

• Network MIMO (or CoMP, “Coordinated Multipoint Tx/Rx”, in LTE parlance)

• Interference alignment

• Relays

• Femtocells

• Huge numbers of antennas
