For your audition clip, please record yourself reading the following:

“Research is a fundamental component of learning. Without research, studying is dry, dull, andlifeless. When students and teachers explore the realities of the natural world together, whenthey probe deeply, when they struggle to understand relationships and mechanisms, learningbecomes something much greater. It becomes inspiring.”

Tari Popp, director of the Office of Planned Giving & Trust Services at AndrewsUniversity, has received the Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) certificationoffered by the American Institute for Philanthropic Studies through the California StateUniversity at Long Beach (CSULB) Foundation. The CSPG is a professional designationprogram designed to a master’s level standard and developed to provide participantswith the body of knowledge required for planned giving professionals.

This certificate allows Popp to provide general education about estate planning andhelp facilitate that process with the assistance of professional advisors. It also meansthat Andrews can continue to be a leader in the area of advancement, specifically inplanned giving and trust services.

Two years ago, the North American Division (NAD) of Seventh-day Adventists encouraged its union and institution planned giving andtrust services directors to seek advanced certification in this area, offering to cover 50 percent of the certification program for anyoneinterested.

“In any profession, an individual needs to continue learning or they will fall behind,” says Popp. “I felt that in order to continue to offer thebest possible service to our constituents, it was important that I take advantage of this opportunity.”

Popp was required to complete six modules taught by a faculty of professional advisors and take two exams at the end of each unit overthe course of a year. After finishing the course work, Popp submitted a practicum applying the information she learned during classes toher work here at Andrews. Roughly 25 people achieve this certification every year and Popp is currently the only person at Andrews thathas it.

“I feel grateful to be given this education opportunity by Andrews University and the General Conference,” states Popp. “I will be able tobetter serve our alumni and friends in this specialty area which will eventually result in additional funds for the support of our studentsand this wonderful school.”

Andrews University invites the community to join them as they celebrate Black HistoryMonth in February. A calendar of events and speaker information is below. Anyquestions should be directed to the Office of Student Life at 269-471-3215. All eventsare free and open to the public. 50 years ago the Civil Rights Act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson with MartinLuther King, Jr., in attendance. This landmark piece of civil rights legislation in the U.S.outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religiousminorities, and women. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirementsand racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and by facilities that served thegeneral public. King’s role in the American civil rights movement helped bring aboutthis legislation, and he called the act nothing less than a “second emancipation.” During black history month we pause to celebrate thislegacy of freedom, and discuss the yet unfulfilled needs of equality and freedom. The Bible scripture theme for this month’s events comes from Acts 5:29. “But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God ratherthan men.’” Saturday, Feb. 1New Life Fellowship Caribbean DaySeminary Chapel11:45 a.m. During this special New Life Fellowship service, participants will enjoy traditional Caribbean music, dress, and special Caribbean speakers. First, I realized that I was not alone in feeling lonely. Many of my fellow international students, whom I cameto know through classes or campus-sponsored activities, also missed their own holiday celebrations. <<<Read the full story >>>

BERRIEN SPRINGS—If you thought you had to travel all the way to the Field Museum in Chicago, Ill. to see a real wooly mammoth, think again. In fact, the most complete skeleton of a mammoth to be found in Michigan is on display in Berrien Springs, Mich., at theAndrews University Museum of Natural History.

“It’s not a Field Museum, obviously,” said Dr. H. Thomas Goodwin, professor of paleobiology and chairman of the biology department atAndrews, “but we do have quite a nice collection of stuff.”

“Certainly, our most famous draw is the mammoth. We have what we call the ‘Prillwitz mammoth,’ which was found on the WesleyPrillwitz farm back in the early 1960s,” Goodwin said. “By direct line of flight, it would be two miles away from here, but it’s slightlyfurther by car.”

“When Mr. Prillwitz was having a pond excavated, dredging it to make it deeper, he ran across this mammoth, and it is the most completemammoth ever found in Michigan up to this point,” Goodwin said. “It’s a very nice specimen.”

While the museum has a nearly-complete skeleton of a mammoth on display, it also has the tusk of a mastodon which was discovered insouthwest Michigan.

“We have the tusk of a mastodon, what we call ‘the Carmichael Mastodon,’” Goodwin said. “These tusks were excavated near Watervlietback in the 1970s.”

According to Dr. Goodwin, “Mastodons were more common here in Michigan than the mammoths, in a ratio of about four to one, probablybecause of the environment.”

Visitors can learn more about the differences between the two species of extinct mammals when they visit the museum, and they can alsolearn about animals that currently live in both Michigan and in other parts of the world.

“We have two areas of better coverage,” Goodwin said. “One would be local specimens, and we have quite a collection of both mammalsand birds from Peru.”

“The museum, really, is kind of an old-fashioned museum with the stuffed specimens, but it also has a quite a nice teaching collection ofspecimens, especially mammals and birds,” Goodwin said. “We also have quite a few insects and a shell collection.”

“The shells were donated by an individual. They really don’t have significant scientific value, but they have a nice display value,” Goodwinsaid. “They’re cool. They have nice variation.”

“We have a crocodile skull. We have bears, just lots and lots of different things. And then, we have a series of casts, including an extinctlion that used to live here in the United States, a saber-toothed cat — the smilodon, and a giant beaver. We have a number of Ice Age casts,”Goodwin said. “We have various teeth of mammoths and mastodons. We have a number of hominid skull casts as well.”

“If a school group is doing something on diversity, and they want to do something locally, we have quite a nice collection of specimens,”Goodwin said.

“Typically, when groups come here to visit, they spend a half an hour or 45 minutes,” Goodwin said. “We also have a green house up on thetop floor that has a tropical room and a desert room and so on, so sometimes when school groups come, some of them will want to do that— visit the museum and the greenhouse.”

Individuals and families with children are also welcome to visit the museum. Although it is not open on a regular basis, visits to theAndrews University Museum of Natural History can be arranged by calling Mayra Robertson in the Biology office at (269) 471-3243during normal business hours. The museum is located in G. McCready Price Hall, 4280 Administration Dr., on the Andrews Universitycampus.

“With a little bit of advanced notice, we’re happy to do that — to open it up and let people come take a look,” Goodwin said. “We have thathappen on a fairly regular basis.”

The  Herald-‐Palladium,  Monday,  Jan.  20

Social  engineer    Prof  teaches  computer  skills  to  help  rebuild  Benton  Harbor

BENTON HARBOR—George Agoki has a dream that technology can be used to help people, to re-build communities and heal the world.

Agoki, 63, is a native of Kenya and chairman of the engineering and computer science department at Andrews University. He learned the practical applications of machines while studying at a missionary boarding school in Uganda. He was taught how to repair lawn mowers and ran the water pump for the farm, before working with rudimentary computers that used punch cards and took up entire rooms.

The philosophy of the school was “Teach the head, the heart and the hand,” Agoki said.

Since September, he has been passing along that belief to participants in a computer literacy class at the Benton Harbor Housing Commission, volunteering four days a week. He plans to recruit students from Andrews to assist him.

JOHN MATUSZAK / HP Staff George Agoki (left), chairman of engineering and computer science at Andrews University, instructs Richard Payne during a computer literacy class at the Benton Harbor Housing Commission Tuesday.

Agoki has volunteered four days a week since September, and also visits men at the Berrien County jail.

Agoki has taken part in numerous community service projects in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, often

recruiting young people to pitch in. Since 2005 he has participated in a ministry that visits men at the Berrien County jail (he prefers to call them “residents,” rather than inmates).

Agoki is the son of a pastor and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Nairobi, where he previously taught. He is a resident of Berrien Springs and has taught at Andrews since 2001. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have four children.

He spoke with Herald-Palladium Staff Writer John Matuszak about his work and his vision for transforming lives through technology.

What kind of computer skills did your students have at the beginning?

We were starting on a very basic level. They can’t handle a computer. “Do you have an email address?” “No. What is email?” So this is an introduction to computer tools, to help them in everyday living. We show them how to use the keyboard. Showing them how to search on the Internet about anything you want. A couple of them are applying for jobs on the Internet. This is great.

Now that they have gained basic skills, what kind of projects are they involved in?

Page 43: Andrews Agenda Ranks Andrews University The Andrews Agenda is sent twice a week to the Andrews University community from the Division of Integrated Marketing & Communication Contact

People are so insulated. They have lived in Benton Harbor all of their lives. They have not had much exposure to how people in other parts of the world live. So I ask “Would you like to have a trip to Africa? Would you like to go on a safari? Where would you like to go? Can you plan a trip? Do you need a passport? How can you do that on the Internet?” They get excited. This way they begin to see the need for computer literacy. It's not just learning the computer for the sake of learning the computer. It's a tool.

How do your students react when they begin to master these skills?

They go from searching the alphabet on the keyboard, spelling out the words, to composing sentences. They realize “Hey, this is do-able. Those baby steps, something we thought was so hard, now we're doing it.” You can see their faces lighting up, “This is useful. We can do it.” Now it comes naturally, and they're asking what is the usefulness of this. ... We are working on something now, as a team, answering the question “Can anything good come out of Benton Harbor?” through poetry. It’s all painted a bleak picture, that’s where you start. Then farther down, you can see something good about it. This is helping them beyond just computer literacy to something they can use. I do feel that they need to tell their own story.

What was your motivation for getting involved with the jail ministry?

I was reading Scripture, Matthew 25, about the end of time, Judgment Day, when Christ separates people into two groups, the sheep and the goats. And he says to the sheep on his right “You saw me hungry and you fed me. You found me naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you came to see me. I was in prison, and you came to see me.” Well, my wife was a nurse, so we were able to see a lot of sick people. I ticked than one off. Food—I’ve given food. Clothing—we’ve given that. What about this prison thing? I don’t want Christ to tell me on Judgment Day, ‘I was in prison and you didn't come to see me!’”

What has that experience been like?

I found all kinds of people there. Hispanics, whites, black. I ask “What brings you here?” “Well, I didn't pay my child support,” “I was caught at this and that.” “How many times have you been here?” “Maybe this is my second time.” So we have repeat offenders.

My interest is, when you get out of here, where do you go? Do you have a job? They can’t find a job, they don't have a driver’s license, their record is not clean. So it’s really a complex cycle of problems. And I’m trying to find a way to help these people. Some need training, some just need support. ... I was told in training “Don't proselytize, don't try to convert them. Share Jesus with them—period.” (Laughs). Fair enough. But I wasn’t quite satisfied. I’m sharing Jesus, but this guy wants a job, this guy wants to reform, this guy wants to be rehabilitated. I asked, “Couldn't we mount a more integrated program?” (The minister) didn’t seem to get my point, at all, so when this call came last summer (to head the computer literacy program) I said I’m going to grab this.

You have a background in urban planning. How does this connect with your interest in renewal for Benton Harbor?

Part of my engagement here is defining the problem, so I can understand the problem. (And) the students can also help me provide solutions. Engineers don’t ask the users what the problem is. Yet the people who are having the problem perhaps could help us define the problem and give us a peak into the solution. So that's why I’m here. ... Someone needs to hold hands with these people and help them. Who knows? If Benton Harbor succeeds, it could be a model to provide solutions around the globe. We must forget about thinking insular. We must think globally.

And technology can help with that.

Exactly.

Death of Leona RunningLive streaming of Dr. Running's funeral will be available at www.andrews.edu/livestream atthe time of her funeral, 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30.

Leona Glidden Running, 97, professor emerita of biblical languages at Andrews University, died on Jan. 22,2014, in Berrien Springs, Mich., after nearly six decades of service to the Seventh-day Adventist TheologicalSeminary and Andrews University.

Viewing will take place at Allred Funeral Home, 212 W Main Street, Berrien Springs, on Wednesday, Jan. 29,from 6–8 p.m. The funeral is at Pioneer Memorial Church on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. Interment will takeplace at Rose Hill Cemetery in Berrien Springs immediately following the service. Please remember herextended family and friends as they grieve.

Niels-Erik Andreasen, president of Andrews University, shared the following statement: “During her long andproductive life Dr. Running broke new ground in the University and in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Shewas the first female professor at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Takoma Park, Md., andlater here at Andrews. She was the first Adventist woman to earn a doctorate in Ancient Near Eastern Studies(Johns Hopkins University), with a specialization in ancient Syriac texts. She overcame the grief of losing herhusband early in life and built her exemplary academic and professional calling. Following her retirement shecontinued to share her linguistic skill with graduate students (Syriac, Egyptian, Akkadian, Hebrew, Aramaic, and almost any other language these students cared to learn). And she served the University with hereditorial talents, improving a good many of its publications over the years… She was an inspiration to manyand an example to us all.”

Jiri Moskala, dean of the Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, says: “Dr. Runningholds a special place in the hearts of her Old Testament and Seminary colleagues and former students, whogreatly appreciated her mentoring during their Seminary years. She was the first woman professor at theSDA Theological Seminary and was indeed a woman of remarkable skills and influence… We praise the Lordfor her life and faithful ministry!”

William Shea, a close colleague, estimates that “Leona assisted more students in writing doctoraldissertations than any other faculty member of Andrews University. She has probably touched theeducational lives of more Seventh-day Adventist ministers than any other woman except Ellen White.”

Born on Aug. 24, 1916, in Flint, Mich., to Charles Comstock Glidden and Leona Mary Bertha Boat Glidden,Leona showed an early attraction to languages. Her mother, a teacher, began coaching her in reading skillswhen she was 3 or 4, and she entered Grade 4 at age 8. She graduated from Adelphian Academy in Holly,Mich.

Running graduated from Andrews University (then Emmanuel Missionary College) as valedictorian in 1937with a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in modern languages. She went on to earn an M.A. in Greek andHebrew from the Adventist Theological Seminary in 1955, and a Ph.D. in Semitic languages from JohnsHopkins University in 1964.

She married Leif (“Bud”) Running on May 17, 1942. On August 20, 1946, when Bud was 37 and Leona almost30, he died while undergoing his third lung operation.

During her early professional years, Running served the Seventh-day Adventist Church in many capacities. From 1944–1948 she worked in the Foreign Language Division of the radio program Voice of Prophecy, translating programs and typing scripts in German, Spanish and Portuguese. In 1950 she moved toWashington, D.C., to become the copy editor for Ministry magazine. During these early years, Running oftenearned far less than her male counterparts for doing the same amount of work. Nevertheless, she continuedto do God’s work, traveling to many European countries, promoting the Seventh-day Adventist Church and,at the same time, expanding her cultural experience.

Running began working for the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in 1955, teaching Greek andHebrew. At the time, the president of the seminary was skeptical about a woman’s ability to teach malestudents, and male students’ willingness to be taught by a woman. She began teaching on a trial basis, but in1956 she was granted regular status and, shortly after, full tenure.

Not content to sit on the sidelines and watch her students, Running was actively involved in their professionaland personal development, and her guidance helped countless individuals find their voice. Her strength anddetermination during a time when women were not always treated as equals with men, even within thechurch, were an inspiration to many.

When the Seminary was moved from Takoma Park, Md. to Berrien Springs, Mich. in 1960, Running came withit, continuing on as a valuable and dedicated professor of biblical languages. Siegfried Horn, professor ofhistory of antiquity at the seminary, nominated her to the Chicago Society of Biblical Research, and sheserved as the first female president from 1981–82.

Among her many interests, Running traveled extensively. In 1951, she traveled with Del Delker to the ParisYouth Congress and to seven European countries. Later she published 36 Days and a Dream, recounting hertrip. In 1957, she joined Siegfried Horn’s first guided study tour to Europe and the Middle East. She wroteanother travelogue of this trip, published in 1958 as From Thames to Tigris. In 1965 she traveled throughEurope and studied six weeks in Israel, ending with a trip through Western Turkey and a cruise of the Aegeanisles. In 1970, she again traveled through Europe to spend eight days in Iran, a weekend on Cyprus, and 10days in Israel. In 1974, she taught in a summer session at Newbold College, England, then spent three weeksin both France and Germany.

For many years Leona collected articles, journals and books on women in ministry. She donated the collectionto the Center for Adventist Research in the James White Library (

http://www.andrews.edu/library/car/collection/R/Running,%20Leona%20Running%20Women%20in%20Church%20and%20Society%20Collection.pdf

). The most notable of her multiple publications is William Foxwell Albright: A Twentieth-Century Genius, published by Morgan Press in 1975, a 436-page biography on the “Dean of Biblical Archaeologists.”

She retired from teaching at her 65th birthday, but for 21 years she continued to teach Egyptian, Akkadianand Syriac in the seminary, finally quitting in May 2002. At the May 2012 commencement ceremony, Leonawas awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Andrews University.

Leona Running was predeceased by her husband, Leif Running; her parents, Charles and Leona Glidden; hersister, Beth Habenicht; and her niece, Linda Joy Habenicht.

Besides countless former students and friends around the world, she leaves to mourn her nieces, MerryHabenicht Knoll and husband Thomas Russell Knoll Sr. of Walla Walla, Wash., and Cheeri Lee Roberts ofQueensbury, N.Y., along with numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

I am happy to report that he completed all five rounds of chemo in threemonths (half the time they initially indicated) and was discharged from BC Children’s Hospital on December23, cancer-free and just in time for Christmas. God’s fingerprints could be found all throughout this verydifficult but amazing journey. I am particularly thankful for His grace and mercy and of course, your prayers.Ewan turned three years old two weeks ago and is eating well and driving his two older sisters crazy, so all iswell in his house!

On March 18, United Way of Southwest Michigan and Honor Credit Union are taking action to promote the impact reading has on our youth. This annual Reading Day of Action asks PreK-5th grade classrooms from all corners of Berrien and Cass County to open their doors to our community members and allow volunteers to share their love of reading with the students. Volunteers will be reading to over 10,000 on one day! Please be a part of raising awareness of the importance of reading on the development in a child’s life.

www.uwsm.org

UNITEDWAYVOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITYAdvancing income, health, education, and basic needs.

Early literacy is the single strongest indicator for success later in life. Be an ADVOCATE for early education in Berrien & Cass counties by sharing

your love of reading with the children of our community!

Reading day of action

For more information please contact Doug Ferrall at (269) 982-1700 ext. 29 or at [email protected]

Schools and Classrooms- will be able to specify a time range they would like volunteers to come and will have the ability to signup a whole school! After that, United Way will coordinate volunteers to come to you! Volunteers will have a 20 minute appointment at the classroom. Though we strongly encourage volunteers to bring books we ask that classrooms have 5-6 books available just in case.

Volunteers- can volunteer from 9am-Noon or Noon-3pm. Typically volunteers read to multiple classrooms and are asked to bring an age appropriate book if available. Teachers and students love to hear new books! Volunteers can signup in a group of two or as a single. We will do our best to keep multiple volunteer groups from one company at the same school building.
