Konza Prairie

WineryNestled in the hills of the Konza

prairie just outside of Manhattan, KS,

this research based winery primarily

focuses on experimenting with wine

production on prairies. In addition to

producing wine, the winery also offers

its products and educational tours to

visitors. The building is earth integrated

for temperature control of aging the

wine.

The building takes its form from a

continuous band that wraps in and

out of the earth. This wrapping creates

distinct segments of the building, each

one gradually collapsing more and more

into the hillside while revealing framed

views to visitors.

Woodworker's StudioSited in the Crossroads District of

Kansas City, Missouri, this structure is

a live-work area for local woodworkers

and artists. The lower portion of the

building, constructed out of concrete,

houses the shop and storage areas for

the artists. The upper portion of the

building, which includes the gallery,

studio, and living spaces, intersects

this concrete structure.

The building’s public face maintains

the urban edge of the area, while the

rear of the building features a courtyard

for the craftsman to use as an exterior

workspace. The exterior courtyard also

brings a natural element to the building.

The second story of the building opens

out onto a roof deck, which is connected

to the gallery spaces for receptions and

other events.

Forest ViewThis solitary view space is

designed for one inhabitant, and

to frame a vew for that visitor.

The form of the folly, which is

compressed and bends, aids in

framing this view and affecting

the visitors experience.

Upon transitioning onto the

elevated platform, a sliver of the

final view is seen by the visitor.

A line of light within the folly

guides the visitor to the final

destination. The form, which

wraps around the elevated

platform, opens up, and allows

the visitor to fully experience

the forest vew ahead.

The model is crafted from a

single plank of poplar wood, and

is held together through friction

joints.

SeatonDesign+ Bui ldOnce a condemed portion of Seaton

Hall’s basement was brought up to

code, the opportunity arose for more

studio space. So, a team of twelve

students and one professor designed

and built the space one summer.

At the beginning, the faculty of the

college set primary goals for the

corridor. These focused on display

space, pin-up boards, and seating.

Through teamwork, many concepts

were explored and built to reach the

final product. Full scale mock-ups

were created by three separate teams

to explain ideas and test feasability.

The end product is a result of these

prototypes.

Construction Process

For the purposes of construction

documentation, my responsibility

was to detail and coordinate the

elevations. The team carefully

considered the materiality of the wall

and how the various panels would

impact the final aesthetic of the space.

Furniture GallerySited within the heart of the crossroads

district, this structure is designed to function

as an IKEA style furniture gallery. Currently,

the site is a corner parking lot along the busy

Main Street.

Two simple rectangular forms create the

basis for the project, with a tertiary form that

wraps and connects the others. Together, the

forms encompass a courtyard that brings in

natural light and greenery.

Lightness is reinforced thorugh the structural

cantilevers, while the wrapping form is

emphasized throughout the interior and

exterior with wooden screens.

For my thesis, I had the opportunity to work

with the czech community of Cuba, KS. This

unique town has been featued in National

Geographic Magazine for being resillient

to the decline of small town America. Also,

having spent some time in the Czech Republic,

I became intrigued with the distinct culture

found only in this place. The design focused

on facilitating this culture, and attracting new

residents through strength of community.

1 Accessible HousingWhile indivdual housing was designed by a collegue, the master plan employed a shrinkage strategy around the main street area for revitalization.

2 Agricultural History ParkUtilizing an open space where the railway intersected the town, small plots of crops historicaly grown in the region will be displayed for an educational park.

3 Walking TrailA 1 mile long that not only promotes recreation but acts as a connection to all of Cuba’s historic assets. A grant is also paired with this project to improve sidewalk condition.

4 Cuba PavillionThe sand court is already present, but an outdoor structure used for community events such as markets, dinners, or sports has been incorporated.

5 Civic LandscapingThe City Office and Silverthorne School, both of which are set back from Main Street, are seeing landscaping improvements to influence the street.

6 Beer GardenAn adaptive reuse project maintains a historic facade, while adding an outdoor area to their cafe and bar within an abandoned structure.

7 Community PlazaThe recently renovated Community Hall will see improvements which not only improve mainstreet but add space for congregation and events.

Parking and TrailheadThis area also serves as a starting point for visitors and displays information for the walking trail in addition seating and an introduction to the park.
