Join us for this low tech, high magic camp covering all aspects of making a puppet show!Develop a story and script using collaborative writing techniques, then construct props & puppets by drawing, painting, sculpting, and paper-mache. Puppet performance skills will be learned through improv exercises, theater games, and play - shifting into rehearsals to create a show with soundscape and original music by the students. Perform for friends and family at the end of the week. Students will create at least one puppet to take home.

Be a voice for the future! Spend a week collaborating with artist activist, Britt Freda, in creating a public art piece about environmental impact, the precarious balance of nature and the importance of working TOGETHER to preserve the extraordinary, beautiful world in which we live. As a team, varying in age, skill, perspective and experience, we will paint a cairn AND build the foundation of a stone cairn as a markers of the directions we believe our global community should explore. Wise animals are expected to show up in our painting as guides.

Join in for a fantastic week of color! Weave balsam baskets, dye natural cotton cloth and practice resist printing (with natural solutions). Learn various techniques to make paper and explore how materials such as balsam wood, cotton, india ink and paper pulp transform into vibrant creations.

Wabi Spirit Ages: 11-17 Mon-Fri, Jul 8-12, 10 am-2 pm Tuition (includes $50 lab fee): $270 Member | $290 General

Wabi means naturalness, simplicity. Throw a tea bowl on the potter’s wheel to fire in the raku kiln. Make a rope incised clay vessel like those of the Jomon period. Design and build a painted Oribe style dish, and model one of Japan’s beloved snow monkeys. Celebrate the arts of Japan!

What caused that ripple in still water? Birds underwater and crabs up in the trees…come explore the wildlife of the wetlands of Louisiana, Florida and Australia. Make a traditional Vietnamese wooden boat (out of clay!) to navigate through tree covered rivers. Alligator sculptures, turtles, bird plates and more!

What is life like for the animals that inhabit the rugged and changeable terrain of the African savanna? Do some serious sculpting, sharing, and considering with clay in hand. Lions, elephants, zebras, and cheetahs will come to life and their patterns will grace the surfaces of our mugs and plates.

GLASSBrian Brenno worked on Dale Chihuly’s glassblowing team for 10 years before starting his own studio on Vashon in 1996. Tara Brenno has been an art teacher at Chautauqua for many years. Glass camps are taught in Brian and Tara’s studio, 9850 SW 148th Street.

So hot it’s cool! Teens experience the wonders of glass by making great works of art. Projects include glassblowing, casting, fusing and mosaic. Students leave with many small projects and a good foundation for future exploration. Give your teens a summer experience they will always remember. Hey Kids! Do you want to build a snowman…in July?! Join us as we bring Elsa, Anna and the magical land of Arendelle to life on the big stage at VCA. Based on the 2018 Broadway musical, Frozen Jr. features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, plus new songs written for the Broadway production. With roles for over 20 students, this camp will be full of magic, humor and plenty of on-stage action. Audition process for those students wanting a lead role in the show; no audition necessary to be part of the ensemble cast.

A growing body of evidence suggests that time on the stage — engaging in theater games and dramatic roleplay — can help build lifelong skills, whether your child is deeply introverted, has a diagnosis on the autism spectrum, or just feels “socially awkward.” Join this 5-day, intensive workshop to build social skills and social confidence in a fun, safe space. VCA youth theater instructor, Christopher Dawson, has trained with leaders in the field of theater-based social skills development and raised two children on the autism spectrum.
