Food Cupboard: 277-4917 Parish Cemetery: General Informaon: 352-4462 or 352-1287 This year, December 24 th falls on a Sunday. That means we'll celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent in the early hours of the morning, and then before you know it we'll be celebrating the birth of Christ! (May God be pleased to grant that our longing to meet Christ, the experience of Advent in our own heart, should in like manner be not long delayed, but swiftly fulfilled!) What that also means, very practically, is that six Masses will be celebrated in St. John's church within a 24-hour period. Since I'm the only priest in Spencerport, it seems pretty likely that it is I who will be celebrating those six Masses. And now, for your canon law fun fact for the day: the Code of Canon Law only allows a priest to celebrate, at maximum, three Masses on a Sunday! Which is no cause for concern. All that means is that I need to write a letter to Bishop Matano asking for permission to celebrate more than three Masses that Sunday. But the necessity of writing that letter caused me to take a good hard look at the Mass schedule, and articulate why it was necessary that I should obtain this permission to exceed what is normally allowed by the universal law and practice of the Roman Catholic Church. In composing this request, I saw an opportunity to both reduce the exception I was seeking from six Masses to five, and also restore a practice that excites me and stirs something in my own heart, namely: the Mass formerly celebrated at 10:00p.m. on December 24 th will this year be celebrated as a true Midnight Mass on Christmas Day. There's something magical about Midnight Mass. I don't know what it is. My mother (a Methodist!) tells me that as a child she used to go to Midnight Mass every year with a Catholic friend. At midnight on Christmas, people walk into a church who would never do so at any other time. And I don't mean those people (many of them, no doubt, our family and friends) who go to Mass twice a year on Christmas and Easter. There are people who have wandered far from God, and yet who see the lights on in church, and hear the carols ringing with joy out into the depths of the night on which we commemorate the birth of the One Who delivers us from eternal damnation and Who gives meaning and purpose to our lives … and something tugs at their heartstrings, and perhaps without even knowing why, they find themselves walking through those doors, and basking in the warmth of Christian charity on what would otherwise have been just another cold, empty night of their unconsummated lives. Or at least, that's what I tell myself to expect on Christmas! Whether God moves those lost souls to return to Him on that night is his business. But for us, the faithful, it is certainly the case that the celebration of Christmas can be a moment of particular grace in our lives also. As much as I enjoyed Christmas on the Canal last week, I am looking forward even more to celebrating my first Christmas in Spencerport! Christmas Mass Schedule as Follows Sunday, December 24, 2017 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM - 12:00 AM (Midnight) Monday, December 25, 2017 8:00 AM - 10:30 AM Here's your second canon law fun fact for the day: when Pope Pius XII first allowed for the universal celebration of evening Masses in the year 1953, he granted to bishops “the right to permit the celebration of Mass in the evening, but Mass shall not begin before four o'clock. ” The Code of Canon Law continues to reference the 'start time' of evening Masses by referring to the time at which they may be celebrated as “the evening of the preceding day” rather than “the afternoon of the preceding day.” Much could be said about this (I have two friends from the world of canon law who literally wrote their dissertations on this topic!!!), but the long and short of it is that the Masses formerly celebrated at 3:00p.m. and 5:00p.m. on Christmas Eve will this year be celebrated at 4:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. The Christmas Morning Masses will be celebrated at 8:00a.m. and 10:30a.m. I hope that the changes to the Mass schedule will not pose a grave inconvenience to anyone whose usual Christmas routine has been formed around family gatherings and other celebrations. But I know that Christ rewards those who follow minutely the dictates of his law and who act in obedience to the disciplines of our holy mother the Church. So, while I might rightly be accused of being a stickler, I hope I can at least say that these changes to the Mass schedule were made for a good reason! May the Lord Jesus prepare our hearts to welcome Him this Christmas. God bless, Fr. Peter
