Dear Saint Mary’s Family, May the Lord give you peace! I am happy to report that in the two months since we launched our Annual Fund, we have raised $129,160 in total pledges of which we have received $101,375 so far. To date, 517 families have made a gift toward our goal of $325,000. If you have not yet contributed to this year’s Annual Fund, I urge you to do so now. I would love to count you among those donors in my next report! This annual fund is vital to the operation of the parish and our build-ing of God’s Kingdom at Saint Mary’s. Without the income from the Annual Fund we cannot sustain the activities and ministries of our parish. If you've never made a gift to the Annual Fund, or if it's been a while since your last gift, may I ask that you consider a gift of $100 or more this year. Each year I am amazed and humbled by the commitment that you and people like you make to St. Mary's. Once again, thank you for your generosity. I hope I can count on you to support this year's Annual Fund. Thanks for all you do for us and be assured of my prayers and the prayers of all the friars for you and your loved ones. Your brother and servant in Christ, in the spirit of Francis of Assisi, Fr. Gonzalo

Annual Fund
On this Sunday, the Evangelist Luke presents us the parable of the Rich Fool. The occasion for this parable is when Jesus is asked to persuade a brother to divide the inheritance, but Jesus rejects the role of judge and exhorts the crowd to guard against all greed or desire for what we don’t have. One important thing we notice throughout the Gospels is that when people approach Jesus for decision on some issue, He often redirects the focus to them. That is, look to themselves first.
This parable tells us about a rich man that plans to take care of his own needs and to protect and enjoy his good fortune. While planning, his life takes a sudden turn when his life is demanded by God. At the end of the parable, God leaves us with the intriguing question: ”the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God”.
As for the teachings of the parable, first of all, it is about the death of an individual and God’s verdict that the man is a fool. Who are the fool? Those who act without God or without wisdom concerning the possibility of destruction. Those who trust in wealth and material possessions for life and security. Those who are self-centered and inattentive to the needs of others. Those who are not rich to what matter to God. Second, it underscores that life is uncertain and fragile since our lives can take dramatic turns at any moment. Third, we have little control over our lives, despite what we think. Fourth, the parable questions us about the meaning of life by warning us against thinking that life consists in abundance of possessions or stuff.
On the other hand, to have possessions are not the fault in the story, but what use we make of them. This is determined by the focus of our lives and in what we trust. In that case, we don’t have to be wealthy to be like the rich fool since we can be driven by greed and focused on things instead of God.
In short, the parable calls us to be rich in what matters to God and to his kingdom among us: “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Mt 6:33). What’s more we are invited to asks ourselves: where our real happiness lies? For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Mt 6:21).
