LISTENING EXERCISES Title:       AND I LOVE HER Exercise  1A Level:      Beginners & Pre-Intermediate Skills:      Listening, reading, writing Activity:   Gapped Text Language Practice:  Simple Present Tense

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING & PRESENTING THE WORKSHEET:

1. Create an Answer Key for yourself from a copy of the complete lyrics, then mark the words

Page 2: AND I LOVE HER

to be practised.   2. Pre-teach the language points and any new vocabulary. 3. Type out/Dictate the words of the song onto an A4 sheet, leaving gaps where the verbs

should be. 4. The missing verbs (in infinitive form) are:  KNOW BE HAVE GIVE BRING SHINE

DO LOVE  (Some verbs are used more than once.)  5. The missing verbs can be written on the board, or on the worksheets before photocopying.

6. Instruct students to write the missing verbs, as they listen to the song.  Title:       AND I LOVE HER Exercise  2A Level:      Intermediate + Skills:      Listening, reading, writing Activity:   Gapped Text Language Practice:  Simple Past + other past constructions

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING & PRESENTING THE WORKSHEET:

1. The purpose of this exercise is for students to convert the simple present into the simple past as they listen, so the singer is talking about a past girlfriend.

2. Therefore, follow the instructions for Exercise 1A unless the exercise needs to be made more difficult.  At this point, you could also include constructions & tenses which are not simple past.

TO MAKE THE EXERCISE MORE DIFFICULT, CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING:

a. Give students the infinitives and ask students to complete the gaps in advance.

b. Give students no vocabulary and ask them to listen to the song and write down the words, without comparing with anyone.  Comparison should be done, once the song has finished.  After changes have been made, play the song again to check.

COMPOSITION OR DISCUSSION Title:       AND I LOVE HER Exercise  1B Level:      Beginners & Pre-Intermediate Skills:      Speaking and/or writing Activity:   Gapped Text Language Practice:  Simple Present Tense

Function:  Discussing a current relationship and boyfriend/girlfriend PEDAGOGIC NOTES FOR EXERCISES 1B & 2B

PAIR-WORK:  Students describe an old flame and the type of relationship they had, what went wrong, etc.  Encourage students to make notes.

MONITORING:  Check the notes for accuracy during pair-work

COMPOSITION:  This can follow the pair-work or be set for homework

Page 3: AND I LOVE HER

Title:       AND I LOVE HER Exercise  2B Level:      Beginners & Pre-Intermediate Skills:      Speaking and/or writing Activity:   Gapped Text Language Practice:  Simple Present Tense

Function:  Discussing an old flame and the past relationship

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER PRACTICE GRAMMAR:  The word: Love is used as a verb and as a noun in the song.

This could be an introduction to simple word-families as follows:

         ADJECTIVE            NOUN          VERB

                 lovely                   love               love

MUSIC:  There is a distinct sound of Spanish Guitar.  This could provoke a discussion about Spanish music and other folk music, or folk dancing.

IMPORTANT LANGUAGE POINTS

The opposite of MUST (+ infinitive) is DON'T HAVE TO (+ infinitive) 'I loved you since I knew you' (This could be US grammar;  however, the correct

UK grammar would be 'I've loved you since I've known you'.  In order to avoid confusing students, the UK version has been given in all the exercises.

'I have to tell you just how I feel'  (present simple after HOW) PHRASAL VERBS:

o to put on = apply o to talk down to s.o. = to speak to s.o. in a condescending way o to make up one's mind (passive version in the lyrics)

'Those days are over' (to be over).  'It's over' is commonly heard at the end of sports events, after the break-up of relationships, a fight, a war, etc., but the phrase does not always have a 'final' meaning.  (Popular phrase:  It's not over until the fat lady sings)

Title:                Roxanne Exercise:          1 Level:               Pre-intermediate + Activity:            Gapped Practice:            Nouns (common, proper, compound)

THE MISSING RESPONSES FOR EXERCISE 2

INSTRUCTIONS:  Match the following responses of the lover with the singer's words. (Some are used more than once)

Alright! Have it your way, but you are wrong! But I am!

But I mean it this time!

But I'm telling the truth!

Don't want to hear what?

Don't want to know what?

Heard what before? I couldn't understand what you were saying.

I'm better-looking than a lot of the others.

Say it in English.  I can't understand what you are saying

Seen what?

Seen what?  Let me explain...

That's not right!  I stay because I love you.

What do you mean?

What is it exactly you have heard before?

Why not?

TUBTHUMPER

sung by CHUMBAWUMBA Special Note for tutors:

The following song may shock you, but it will interest and delight your students;  however, they may seem a little dismayed when at

first they think it is too difficult.  In fact, it is so repetitive, it is not too challenging at all, so encourage them to persevere. The spoken introduction in Tubthumper comes from the film :"Brassed Off", the story of which is summarised as follows:-

"Economics and music are the twin focal points of this comedy/drama about a community in crisis. The small British town of Grimley has long been dominated by a coal mine where most of the men work, and the town's greatest source of pride is the Grimley Colliery Band, a brass ensemble that's won a number of nationwide competitions. Danny (Pete Postlewaite) is a retired miner in poor health who directs the band."   Thanks to Mike for this information.
