Stephenson was the surveyor and later engineer for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The reverse depicts the bridge at Newton over the Sankey Canal. The Grand Junction Railway linked Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham and, in time, helped to ensure the commercial successes of each city.

The 1930 British Empire Games was the first of what is now known as the Commonwealth Games. They were held in Hamilton, Ontario from 16-23 August. There were 400 competitors representing 11 nations, and 59 events. Women were only able to enter swimming events.

The 1934 British Empire Games were the second of what is now known as the Commonwealth Games. They were held at Wembley in England from 4–11 August. There were 500 competitors representing 17 nations, including the Irish Free State. In all there were twenty-one events for men and nine for women, these being for swimming and, in athletics, sprint events.

The 1938 British Empire Games were the third of what is now known as the Commonwealth Games. They were held from 5–12 February 1938 and coincided with Sydney’s sesqui-centenary. There were 464 competitors representing 15 nations. In all there were 71 events.

Allan Louis Neville Jay (b. 1931), competed first for Australia and then for the United Kingdom; five-time-Olympian foil and épée fencer and world champion; winner of two silver medals in Rome in 1960 and Great Britain’s flag bearer in the 1964 Olympic Games. After Auckland he participated in a further nine Commonwealth Games representing the England. He participated in the Maccabiah Games in 1953 and 1957 and was elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. The Auckland Empire Games was the fourth and the first post-war British Empire Games. A total of 590 athletes represented 12 nations at a total of 87 events.
