Analysis of Existing Magazine Covers
Katie Murdoch
The main image is of the artist Skrillex on a bomb with the U.S. flag on it
which links with the title “U.S. DUBSTEP EXPLOSION!”
It also takes up the whole cover which shows it will be the main story
Bold and large magazine masthead which is white which
contrasts with the colours of the background and is
conventionally spread across the top of the magazine
Has a consistent house style with only 5 colours which makes it look professional
The text hooks is justified on each side to which side it’s on – text on the left is justified to
the left and the text on the right is justified to the right
Bold font which stands out to the consumer. It’s also in relation to the
music as that too is bold
Skrillex is in a yellow colour which makes it stand out as the main article
is about him which would draw in consumers who are like Skrillex
It’s not full of text which would make it look too busy and difficult to read
Barcode is initial information so it isn’t as important in
attracting consumers so it’s small and in the corner of the
cover
The tagline is above the title which is normally on every Mixmag magazine , which tells you what the content of the magazine is about.
The text has a black background on it which makes it stand out more
The button is seasonal and links with the reader. It is
advertising the guide of the things to do in the festive
season. It is black font on a yellow background which
catches the eye
The masthead is in red which stands out to the rest of the magazine as the other colours are dull
The main story is also in red which stands out on the dull
background
The main image is the only one on the cover, the male is the
stereotypical person who would enjoy this type of music with his tattoos and his dishevelled look, which appeals to this audience
This is the official logo for T in the Park which appeals to those who are planning on going as they may want
to know what it’s like before they purchase a ticket, it also gives an
insight to those who are already going which
appeals to a large audience as it’s a well-known festival
The button has a dark background with white writing which stands out and attracts
more people as it’s above everything e.g. the writing and
picture. Exclusive also shows that this is the only place where you can view the content and if you are interested in this story you
would purchase it as it’s the only place to view it
The barcode is in the corner of the magazine as
it’s not as important as the rest of the page but it
shows that this is a professional magazine
This also has exclusive which also indicates that this is the only place where you can see this story which encourages people to buy the magazine
The writing on this is in white which isn’t as bold as the main text however it has a shadow round the
edges which makes it stand out, however the
“EXCLUSIVE” above it is in red and eye catching
The text follows the house style as it’s all the same font and colours apart from the “In the studio…
global” which is in a different font which is more edgy which relates
with the main image as he appears to me an edgy man. The text looks handwritten which also could link
with his tattoos
Has the whole contents of the magazine in an
index to make it easier to direct you to what you would like to browse or
to see if they have a certain article in you
would like to read
Follows the house style with the red, black, and white colours with the same fonts
Has different sections for the more
important stories which the readers
may be more interested in
The date of the magazine

and is easy to read
Notifies the reader which articles were on the front cover which
makes it easier for them to find something they were interested in from what they saw on the
front cover

magazine it is and also which may relate to an
article
Dotted lines which separate the different
sections from each other

some cases

the corner of them to show where abouts the article is
in the magazine

big number, which also shows that this magazine has been published a long time

than the subtitle which
