What are analgesics?

• Drugs intended to relieve pain–Non-prescription and prescription

Also known as opioid and non-opioid pain killers

• Tylenol (acetaminophen and codeine)

• Ibuprofen• Aspirin• Oxycodone• Vicodin• Morphine• Methadone

Purpose of non-opioid analgesics

• Anti-inflammation • Fever reduction• Pain management• Arthritis patients • Taking too many in a short period of

time can lead to problems–Ulcers

Side effects from non-opioid

• Harsh on stomach lining• Double vision• Drowsiness• Seizures• Vomiting• Confusion• Dizziness

Purpose of opioid analgesics

• Relieving severe pain• Act on the brain by activating opioid

receptors• Increases dopamine for pain relief• Relaxation• Relief from heroin withdraw

Side effects from opioid

• Depression• Withdraw (addiction)• Dizziness• Anxiety• Bloating• From injection: HIV/AIDS• Death

People who shouldn’t take analgesics

• People on anti-depressants (avoid opioid analgesics)

• Pregnant women (avoid strong painkillers)

• If taking another analgesic or any other anti-inflammatory– Do not combine analgesics
