Annonaceae form the most diverse family within the Magnoliales. In 1990 an Index to generic names of Annonaceae was published and in 1994 an Index to Neotropical species of Annonaceae was compiled. Especially the latter proved an immensely useful tool for Neotropical botanists. Here, we present an updated Index of all valid names in Neotropical Annonaceae on the genus and species level. It also includes nomina nuda and orthographic variants. Reference and year of first publication, synonymy, and typification are mentioned. Several new combinations are made. In addition, some lectotypifications are proposed. A supplementary list is added of all Neotropical type collections. Annonaceae are a large pantropical family of trees and lianas (Fig. 1). It is the most diverse family within the Magnoliales (Keßler 1993, Couvreur et al. 2011). The family con- tributes significantly to tree diversity in rain forests around the world (Gentry 1993, Tchouto et al. 2006, Punyasena et al. 2008). Much revisional work has been done in the framework of the multidisciplinary Annonaceae project (Maas 1983). At the beginning of the project monographic studies of selected genera and morphological character analyses were the main focus. Nowadays the focus has shifted towards the reconstruction of molecular phyloge- netic relationships of the genera and the investigation of associated character evolution (Couvreur et al. 2008). In 1990 an Index to generic names of Annonaceae was published (Setten and Maas 1990) and in 1994 an Index to Neotropical species of Annonaceae was compiled (Maas et al. 1994). From 1994 onwards, many revisions of Neo- tropical genera have been published: Annona. Unpublished molecular phylogenetic studies by H. Rainer (WU) revealed that the genera Raimondia and Rollinia should be merged with Annona. The nomenclatural consequences were published recently (Rainer 2007). Chatrou et al. (2009) published a very preliminary molecular phylogenetic study of the genus. Although they sampled only 24 species, this sampling represented the complete geographical range of the genus, as well as the considerable morphological (particularly floral) variation. Cremastosperma. This genus, with 31 species of which 13 were new to science (Pirie and Zapata Cruz 2004, Pirie 2005a), was recently revised by Pirie (2005b). Duguetia. In 2003 Maas, Westra and Chatrou revised the genus Duguetia in the framework of Flora Neotropica. In this volume Chatrou also brought the African genus Pachypodanthium (three species) into synonymy with Duguetia and described an additional species, thereby expanding the area of the latter to include both sides of the Atlantic. Ephedranthus. This genus was revised in 1999 by the Brazilian taxonomist J. Oliveira (MG). In his revision he recognized the same species as were previously treated by Fries (Oliveira and Sales 1999). Fusaea. A small genus with only two species was revised by Chatrou and He in 1999. Guatteria. The genus Guatteria is the largest genus of Annonaceae in the Neotropics with as many as 300 recognized names a few years ago (Erkens et al. 2008). Since 1983 both phylogenetic and biogeographic (Erkens et al. 2007a, 2007b, 2009), and revisionary work has been done in the Guatteria alliance. The most recent revisions of Guatteria dealt with Central America (Erkens et al. 2006, Erkens 2007), the Guianas (Scharf et al. 2005, 2006a, 2006b, 2008), southeast Brazil (Loba ˜o and Mello-Silva 2007, Loba ˜o 2009, Loba ˜o et al. 2010, 2011), Amazonia (Maas and Westra 2010) and the Neotropics in general (Erkens et al. 2008). Molecular studies in Guatteriella, Guatteriopsis and Heteropetalum, revealed that the three genera were untenable as separate entities beside Guatteria, and had to be sunk into the latter (Erkens et al. 2007a, Erkens and Maas 2008). Due to these efforts in this Index, only 211 valid names in Guatteria remain. Nordic Journal of Botany 29: 257356, 2011 doi: 10.1111/j.1756-1051.2011.01092.x, # 2011 The Authors. Annonaceae are a large pantropical family of trees and lianas(Fig. 1). It is the most diverse family within the Magnoliales(Keßler 1993, Couvreur et al. 2011). The family con-tributes significantly to tree diversity in rain forests aroundthe world (Gentry 1993, Tchouto et al. 2006, Punyasenaet al. 2008). Much revisional work has been done in theframework of the multidisciplinary Annonaceae project(Maas 1983). At the beginning of the project monographicstudies of selected genera and morphological characteranalyses were the main focus. Nowadays the focus hasshifted towards the reconstruction of molecular phyloge-netic relationships of the genera and the investigation ofassociated character evolution (Couvreur et al. 2008).
In 1990 an Index to generic names of Annonaceae waspublished (Setten and Maas 1990) and in 1994 an Index toNeotropical species of Annonaceae was compiled (Maas etal. 1994). From 1994 onwards, many revisions of Neo-tropical genera have been published:
Annona. Unpublished molecular phylogenetic studies byH. Rainer (WU) revealed that the genera Raimondia andRollinia should be merged with Annona. Cremastosperma. This genus, with 31 species of which 13were new to science (Pirie and Zapata Cruz 2004, Pirie2005a), was recently revised by Pirie (2005b).
Duguetia. In 2003 Maas, Westra and Chatrou revisedthe genus Duguetia in the framework of Flora Neotropica. In this volume Chatrou also brought the African genusPachypodanthium (three species) into synonymy withDuguetia and described an additional species, therebyexpanding the area of the latter to include both sides ofthe Atlantic.

Fusaea. A small genus with only two species was revisedby Chatrou and He in 1999.
Guatteria. The genus Guatteria is the largest genus ofAnnonaceae in the Neotropics with as many as 300recognized names a few years ago (Erkens et al. 2008).Since 1983 both phylogenetic and biogeographic (Erkenset al. 2007a, 2007b, 2009), and revisionary work has beendone in the Guatteria alliance. Klarobelia, Malmea, Mosannona and Pseudomalmea. Theproblematic and heterogeneous genus Malmea appeared oncloser study to fall apart into four well-distinct genera, threeof them new, viz. Klarobelia, Mosannona and Pseudomalmea(Chatrou 1998).
Oxandra. A taxonomic study by the Finnish taxonomistL. Junikka (H) is still under way and the results of this workare too preliminary to be incorporated in this Index.
Pseudoxandra. Maas and Westra revised this poorlyknown genus in 2003. Of the total number of 22 species,no less than 14 were new to science.
Stenanona. A revision of this small, mainly CentralAmerican, genus has just been finished by Schatz and Maas(2010).
Unonopsis, Bocageopsis, and Onychopetalum. These threegenera were quite recently revised by Maas et al. (2007). Of
the total of 49 species of Unonopsis 23 appeared to be newto science.
Xylopia. D. M. Johnson (OWU) is currently engaged inrevisional studies of the African, Asia, and American speciesof this genus, but these have not been published so far.
The cumulated revisionary work, in the authors’opinion, makes a new edition of the Index necessary, including all new data up to April 2011. Like the previousedition, the present index gives a complete list of validnames in Neotropical Annonaceae on the species level andbelow, including nomina nuda and orthographic variants. In addition, names at the generic level are now alsoincluded. For each name, reference and year of firstpublication, synonymy, and typification are given. Updatesare available online via the ‘‘Annonbase World SpeciesList of Annonaceae’’ website (Rainer and Chatrou 2006).
For the sake of clarity some entries for Paleotropical taxaare included in the Index. This occurs whenever the samename was applied both to a Neotropical and a Paleotropicaltaxon.
Finally, a supplementary list is given of type collectionsrelating to Neotropical taxa, followed by the correct nameswhenever applicable.
Explanation of the Index
Each entry may be made up of three elements which areexplained below:
1. Name and reference
Currently accepted names are printed in bold face.Names not printed as such are synonyms. Entries fornomina nuda, misapplied names, errors, or ortho-graphic variants are placed between square brackets.
Author’s names are abbreviated according to Brummittand Powell’s (1992) ‘Authors of plant names’.
Titles of journals and periodicals are abbreviatedin accordance with ‘Botanico-Periodicum-Huntia-num-2’ (Bridson et al. 2004). Titles of booksand year of publication are listed as in ‘Taxonomicliterature’, 2nd ed. (Stafleu and Cowan 19761988).
Whenever applicable the reference is followed by:
‘‘auct. non:’’a misapplied name,‘‘nom. illeg.’’an illegitimate name,‘‘nom. nud.’’a nomen nudum (invalidly published),‘‘non’’a later homonym,‘‘orth. var.’’an orthographic variant (invalidly
published); however, the spelling ‘‘Anona’’,frequently found in older literature, is not men-tioned: we consistently used the now-acceptedspelling ‘‘Annona’’.
2. Type and type location
For the type indication the following terms are used:holotype, lectotype, syntype, neotype and type (used when
the status of the type collection could not be determinedyet; if this is followed by a blank space, the type collectioncould not be traced).
Type location is indicated by the herbarium acronymaccording to ‘Index herbariorum’ (Holmgren et al. 1990).Locations of isotypes are not mentioned.
Collector’s initials are not given, unless when necessaryto avoid confusion (e.g. C. Wright, R. S. Williams, etc.).
3. Synonymy
Nomenclatural synonyms are indicated by the sentences‘‘Based on the same type’’ (in the 1994 Index indicatedby) and ‘‘Taxonomic synonyms’’ (in the 1994 Indexindicated by). Non-Annonaceous taxa are indicated bythe proper name of the family placed between {}.
The foregoing may be illustrated by the next fourexamples:
