Introduction & History

Created in Atlanta, Georgia on 8 May 1886, the first Coca-Cola was described as “delicious and

refreshing”. Not much has changed since then, and there’s still nothing better than an ice-cold

Coke to quench your thirst.

The Coca-Cola contour bottle, which dates back to 1915, is the most recognised packaging in

the world today, and the exact formula is a famous trade secret. Over time the Coca-Cola brand

has come to mean more than a drink, achieving celebrity status in many spheres of society. It

represents the power of optimism and positive thinking. It is “happiness in a bottle”, it connects

people and it brings out the best in the human spirit.

That’s why Coke is aligned with properties that embody the brand experience. In South Africa,

these “feel-good” platforms include football, music, holidays, food and summer. Across a range

of media channels, you’ll often hear about the involvement of Coca-Cola in landmark initiatives,

like Coca-Cola Football Stars, My Coke Fest, Coke & Food, and much more.

Coca-Cola is the only brand in the world to have an entire museum that showcases its history,

current reality and future possibility. The New World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta is open to the

public and is a “must see” if you are ever in that city. Coca-Cola contains sugar, high

carbonation levels and caffeine.

Coke was established in 1886 by John S. Pemberton in Columbia, Georgia. In 1889 Coca Cola

formula and brand was established by Asa Candler who also incorporated Coke in 1892.Bottling

business began in 1899.Non-alcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups throughout the world.

Started operating in Pakistan in 1953.CCBP (Coca Cola Beverages Pakistan Limited).Plants

located in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Rahimyar Khan, Multan and

Lahore. Two independent plants in Rawalpindi and Peshawar. Serves 70,000 customers and

retail outlets. Employs 1,800 people in Pakistan.

This report looks at the international beverage company Coca-Cola, one of the most recognized

brands in the world. Coca-Cola has built a global empire and now sells close to 400 brands in

almost 200 countries. The company claims to adhere to the “highest ethical standards” and to be

“an outstanding corporate citizen in every community we serve”.

Yet Coca-Cola’s activities around the world tell a different story. Coca-Cola has been accused of

dehydrating local communities in its pursuit of water resources to feed its own plants, drying up

farmers’ wells and destroying local agriculture. The company’s own workers have also suffered:

workers in Coca-Cola and supplier plants have seen their rights violated in countries such as

Colombia, Turkey, Guatemala and Russia. Only

through its multi-million dollar marketing campaigns can Coca-Cola sustain the clean image it

craves. This report not only reviews Coca-Cola’s record over and against its rhetoric on

corporate social responsibility. It also recommends action, both to send a message to Coca-Cola

and to redress some of the damage inflicted by the company’s operations. This is War on Wants’

mission more widely: to support people in developing countries in their fight against the root

causes of poverty, but also to inform and inspire people in rich countries to challenge the global

structures which sustain poverty across

the world.

When COCA COLA came in Pakistan?

In 1950s Coca cola started its operations in Pakistan In 1996, the coca cola itself took over

business operations in Pakistan & setup its 1st production plant in Karachi. Now there are 6

production units and11 distribution units working in Pakistan providing employment to more

than 6000 people. Coca-Cola Co expects to start production in at least three new factories in

Pakistan and two in Egypt over the next 18 months, seeing double-digit percentage growth in

sales for both markets this year, its Middle East and North Africa president told a foreign news

agency.

Surpassing Egypt for its sales growth, Pakistan will see three new plants open in the next 18

months in Karachi, Multan and Islamabad to serve the domestic market with sparkling drinks

such as Coke, Fanta and Sprite.

“We watch the needle in Pakistan and almost every month we red-line on what our capacity is,”

Ferguson said, adding he expected sales growth of around 20 per cent in Pakistan this year.

“We’re just scratching the surface there.”
