Capillary walls are just one cell thick

Large diffusion gradient

Myoglobin within the muscle cell has a much higher affinity for O2 than Hb

Diameter of capillaries is very narrow

The extensive network of capillaries surrounding the tissues

Factors that ensure effective diffusion from muscles to tissues

Distance for diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide is very short

Oxygen travels from a high concentration to a low concentration

Large surface area for exchange of gases

Forces blood cells to travel in single file maximising the diffusion of gases across the cell wall

It attracts oxygen towards it

Effective diffusion from

muscles to tissues
