We host over 60 independent events every year focused on the issues

and trends in engineering simulation

World CongressNAFEMS World Congress is a biennial global conference which has been a fixture on the

simulation calendar for 30 years.

Bringing together the international community in a neutral forum the last Congress in Stockholm attracted over 600 attendees including industrial users, software

ConferencesThroughout the year, NAFEMS holds a number of conferences

including dedicated regional and specific events across the globe.

SeminarsSeveral seminars are hosted every year focusing on current areas of interest as well as emerging topic areas.

WebinarsOnline webinars take place frequently allowing members to attend our events, no matter where in the world they are.

NAFEMS members benefit from seminar credits enabling many events to be attended inclusive of membership. Members also receive significant discounts on our World Congress and Training.

PSE Competencies – A New Standard

PSE (Professional Simulation Engineer) competencies define the

competencies that good simulation engineers should possess.

Incorporating thousands of individual competency statements

across 26 technical areas

Peer-reviewed over several years by NAFEMS technical working

groups and external experts as part of EASIT2 project

These competencies are the foundation for the PSE

Competency Tracker and PSE Certification.

Subsea UK/NSRI – simulation community

• Is a simulation community needed for the UK

subsea sector?

• There is a precedent…

Page 36: An Introduction to NAFEMS - subseauk.com 23ju… · NAFEMS The International Association for the Engineering Modelling, Analysis & Simulation Community 1 Tim Morris 23 June 2017 Chief

NAFEMS oil and gas focus group

• The NAFEMS CFD working group includes contributors from many industries, several from the oil and gas sector

• The idea of a focus group for oil and gas applications had been mooted for several years. In 2016 we formed a specific oil and gas focus group

• The focus group comprises expert CFD users from across the sector and is currently preparing guidance for CFD practitioners for a range of applications.

Page 37: An Introduction to NAFEMS - subseauk.com 23ju… · NAFEMS The International Association for the Engineering Modelling, Analysis & Simulation Community 1 Tim Morris 23 June 2017 Chief

NAFEMS oil and gas focus group

• There is already some high-level guidance available (for example, DNV recommended practice guidelines)

• However, there is currently no coordinated system of documentation on how to undertake practical CFD analysis for many oil and gas applications

• Whilst practitioners may agree on the high-level approach, the devil is in the detail, and it is likely that the approaches developed across the industry in the absence of detailed guidance will be inconsistent.

Page 38: An Introduction to NAFEMS - subseauk.com 23ju… · NAFEMS The International Association for the Engineering Modelling, Analysis & Simulation Community 1 Tim Morris 23 June 2017 Chief

NAFEMS oil and gas focus group

• Experienced CFD engineers are

undoubtedly undertaking similar kinds of

routine simulations but have established their

own methods and workflows which will

differ, so CFD predictions will be inconsistent

across our industry

• For CFD engineers entering the industry there

is no coordinated literature that can assist

when establishing new capability.

Page 39: An Introduction to NAFEMS - subseauk.com 23ju… · NAFEMS The International Association for the Engineering Modelling, Analysis & Simulation Community 1 Tim Morris 23 June 2017 Chief

NAFEMS oil and gas focus group

• Inconsistency is bad for the industry – it

reduces confidence in advanced simulation

approaches

• Without low-level, detailed guidance aimed

at the practitioner, as the use of CFD and

other simulation methods increases, so will

inconsistency

• Without low-level guidance, there is a

greater risk of poor practice…

Page 40: An Introduction to NAFEMS - subseauk.com 23ju… · NAFEMS The International Association for the Engineering Modelling, Analysis & Simulation Community 1 Tim Morris 23 June 2017 Chief

Severe expansion in mesh causes unrealistic

distortion of plume envelope

Inappropriate meshing motivated by HPC complacency prevented the CFD mesh from being adequately refined in the regions of interest

Example for atmospheric dispersion

NAFEMS oil and gas focus group

• The focus group has set out to share knowledge and collaborate for the good of the industry

– review existing documentation and guidance

– produce practical guidance for CFD

– identify potential shortcomings in existing CFD software

– blind tests

– verification and validation• It may not be possible to reach consensus on

everything, but at least any open questions can be properly documented and returned to when better V&V data becomes available.
