De Jure Segregation was enforced by laws and overwhelmingly affected Southern African Americans.

Northern African Americans more readily faced issues not directly purveyed by local government.

The amount of available jobs and housing open to blacks was not enough to cover the needs of migrating African Americans. High density populations of black citizens became prominent in major northern cities.

Newark also suffered from race tensioned riots. This is one page from the list of that cities related fatalities.

The Black Power movement was a fractured endeavor, with many different groups, such as the militant Black Panthers and the Organizations of Afro-American Unity (a group organized by Malcolm X pictured right), competing for success.
