Our annual golf tournament, Captain’s Cup was held on 24 September and all of us had a good time, especially for one participant, Mr Alvin Lim, who scored a Hole in One! Congratulations! We thank Outdoor Products for sponsoring goody bags for all the participants, as well as other sponsors for the prizes during the event.
We organised a Mid-Autumn Celebration where 70 members and their children enjoyed themselves carrying lanterns around our golf course, followed by eating pomelos and mooncakes. Our first “Golftoberfest” event, a combination of golf game and Oktoberfest dinner was a sold out event. Check out the photos and reports inside.
In this issue, we have a feature on our youth bowler, Isabelle Lee, who is now in USA to further her studies and training, after 8 years of representing the club successfully. We wish her all the best and we look forward to see her back at NSRCC in the future!
Also, in this edition of Greenside Matters, we cover the basics of proper golf attire. How you dress for the course, is part of the decorum of the game. We do hope that these pointers help you for your next round of golf.
Our latest nightery, Club Viola opened with much fanfare, and members can look forward to their promotions. If you plan to drive up north during the year-end holidays, do read up on our affiliated clubs special on Malaysia. We also have our regular articles on golf improvement techniques and golf rules. Have a good read and enjoy your holidays!
See you soon, Sze Wah
CorreCtion: in our September/october issue, Mr Yong chee Leong’s name was misspelt under the Hole-in-one achievers’ list. We sincerely apologise for the error.

H er bowling journey began in 2008 at NSRCC, when Isabelle Lee Xin Yu was only 12 years old. In just eight
years, Isabelle has achieved more than 40 wins. Interestingly, her participation in bowling came as a coincidence.
Her parents were looking for a sport to boost Isabelle’s confidence. One day, when the Lee family was walking around NSRCC, Isabelle’s brother suggested to try the bowling alley. That eventful visit ignited Isabelle’s passion for bowling. “Never did I know that once I started bowling, I would never ever leave the sport till today,” says Isabelle.
During her first participation in a bowling championship, Isabelle emerged first runner up at the tender age of 12. The following year, she clinched the Champion title for women’s category at the 40th Singapore National Bowling Championship.
Isabelle’s winning formula: 3P (Patience + Perseverance + Practice)Without any prior experience or family background in bowling, what could possibly be Isabelle’s secret formula to winning? Isabelle says: “It was more on patience and perseverance in doing the drills to better my game. And of course, regular practice to help improve my scores and accuracy.”
Isabelle adds that she practiced to have an open mind during training so that she can better adapt to changes and opinions. However during competitions, she tends to be more focused. Isabelle is currently in the United States to further her studies but that doesn’t put a stop to her bowling journey. In fact, Isabelle will be representing her school for their college league!
Reminiscing her involvement with the NSRCC Bowling Youth Team, Isabelle says: “The coaches and Aunty Florence always
helped me through my games, giving me physical support during our tournaments. NSRCC has also helped to expose me to more competitions.”
For youths who are interested in bowling but still unsure, Isabelle says: “Do not be afraid to roll the first ball down the lane. The journey may be tough, but do not give up. Instead, focus on pursuing what you want. No matter how difficult the process, the outcome will be fruitful as long as you put in your best.”
Those are certainly very wise words of advice from Isabelle Lee, the coincidental bowler who went on to create a name for herself in the game.

T he annual staff engagement activity Let’s Bowl, was held at Resort Bowl
on 29 September. Its aim was to foster and strengthen working relationships between employees, as well as to promote an active lifestyle.
Traditionally, each participant had to find a buddy and form a pair; each team will then be made up of two random pairs. But this year, participants were given the chance to form their own team of four. A total of 14 teams participated in the friendly competition, with General Manager, Ng Heng Chew, joining in the fun!

Celebrating Mid-Autumn in…the Golf Course!
N SRCC held its inaugural Mid-Autumn Celebration at NSRCC Changi on 10 September. It was a sold out event with 78
participants, including many excited children!
At the start of the event, the young participants did colouring activities related to the Mid-Autumn Festival. They also tied wires to sticks and placed candles in their own lanterns, with adult supervision.
Then, it was time for the event highlight where all participants went into the Golf Course with their lanterns! The course transformed into an enchanting trail, glowing with the strings of light sticks and paper lanterns, under the clear night sky.
After the walk, participants gathered at JCafé where they were treated to a delicious spread of mooncakes and pomelos. The children were also invited to play sparklers at the open area outside JCafé. The event ended with a Lucky Draw and participants went home with happy tummies and fond memories.

A Night to Remember – Golftoberfest 2016B eer and golf are definitely
no strangers to each other, but when beer, golf and succulent German fare are placed together in the same tantalising equation, you get NSRCC’s Golftoberfest 2016!
Running successfully into its third year at NSRCC Changi, 30th September 2016 saw over 130 merrymakers ready to tee off and wait with bated breath for the evening’s festivities.
Before Golfers eagerly set off for their favourite game of golf, our Oktoberfest Girls were all set to distribute two bottles of Erdinger beer to them, as they made their way to our golf course!
As the sun began to set, preparations were underway in the Leaders Room, waiting for the party to begin! The assemblage of Oktoberfest participants flowed in, all ready to get ready to eat and drink the night away!
Lines of German cuisine such as potato salad, sauerkraut and pork knuckles were ready to be devoured, as well as free flow of beer to wash all that goodness down!
Entertainment was not short either, as there were games and even a lucky draw, to keep all our guests entertained! We certainly hope everyone had a memorable evening and look forward to the next Oktoberfest celebration.

Golf Fitness for YouBy Bernie Tan, Certified Instructor, Mizuno Golf School
In today’s golf scene, golf fitness may not be well known among amateur golfers. When you step foot into a range, you will see that it’s filled with golfers of different ages and varying expertise levels.
However if you step into a gym, there won’t be many golfers working on golf-specific exercises for their game. At the range, many of them would be trying to work on their swing, yet sometimes it’s so easy to not realize that our possible physical limitations would play a part in habits that we form in our golf swing. Having said that, it is quite the opposite on tour, where most of the touring golf professionals have understood the importance of fitness and spend a fair amount in the gym on golf-specific exercises.
For a long time, fitness in golf was not appreciated until Tiger Woods dominated the golfing scene and proved that fitness changed him.
Golf fitness is one of the most effective ways to build consistency in the golf game. It creates awareness in our body and prevents injuries, while helping golfers to develop strength, a strong core, balanced body and endurance. Working out on golf-specific exercises will build a strong powerful swing and helps a golfer to increase club head speed, which would lead to longer distance in their game.
Golf fitness is beneficial for competitions as it helps golfers and touring professionals to fight the hot sun, and really keep a strong mind through four days of competition and practice round. Fitness helps to gain longer endurance in the body and mind, and produces better results.
Fitness in golf also helps to bring more awareness in injury prevention and points out physical limitations that could also be caused from injuries. It has definitely created a possibility for average golfers to further improve their game and to get rid of bad habits. It highlights past injuries, limitations and prescribes exercises that will help build a solid swing. It also leads to better golf performance, strength and body conditioning.
There are so many benefits with golf fitness. Performance is often determined by the last remaining holes. Many golfers would get exhausted through the last few holes and golf fitness helps a golfer to build stamina and endurance mentally and physically. It may be an extra visit to the gym, or a few extra things to work on, but it makes a big difference when it is taken into consideration and not ignored. Fitness produces great results in golf.
Golf fitness today will definitely give you a heads up as you work to improve your game and performance. Golf fitness has now become a huge factor in identifying an average player and a tour player.
Mizuno Golf School at NSRCC Changi conducts a weekly MGS specialty Clinic: Fix your Body & Fix your Slice. It includes a FlightScope analysis along with a functional movement screen that would give you a good understanding to how the body and swing connects and how your body is performing in the swing. For more information or to book for an appointment, visit Mizuno Golf School at NSRCC Changi.

Dear Golfers
It is our Member’s responsibility to inform his/her guests of the dress code and ensure that proper attire is worn by his/her guests at the Club as stipulated by the Club Bye-Laws of NSRCC.
Acceptable Attire – Men3 Collared shirts (with sleeves) and mock-turtleneck styles3 Tailored shorts/pants/trousers 3 Sport socks and golf shoes with soft spikes
Acceptable Attire – Women 3 Collared shirts/blouses (with sleeves or sleeveless) and mock-turtleneck styles3 Tailored shorts/pants/trousers/skirts 3 Sport socks and golf shoes with soft spikes
ShirtsThe general attire for tops is a collared golf shirt. In our climate, these types of shirts are often short-sleeved and have two or three buttons and are long enough and to be tucked in at all times. The dress code for women stipulates that they may not wear a shirt that exposes the midriff during the swing. The Club may permit sleeveless shirts for women as long as the shirt has a collar.
PantsFor our Club as is also the case at most other golf courses, tailored shorts/pants/trousers are required for all men and tailored shorts/pants/trousers/skirts are required for women. Belts are also required with pants or shorts. Jeans or denim of any type are considered inappropriate golf attire.
ShoesOur Club requires members to wear only golf shoes with soft spikes. Soft plastic spikes are the rule, as they do not damage the course. Metal golf spikes are not permitted anywhere at the Club. We ask that all members be suitably attired when playing at our NSRCC golf courses. Tank-tops, singlets, jogging shorts are not allowed and inappropriate. Our course marshals will be stepping up their checks on our golfers’ attire. Please ensure that you are in your proper golf attire while at our Golf Courses, Driving Range, Putting and Chipping greens.
PROPER GOLF ATTIRE Like any golf club in Singapore, NSRCC has its own Dress Code. Our club rules and etiquette requirements are there to ensure consistency of standards for all members, guests and visitors. Though it is not possible to stipulate exactly the type of clothing that is appropriate, nevertheless all Members should understand the intent of these rules and cooperate with the Club.
Enjoy golfing!

Finding The Nearest Point of Relief
W e have recently received plenty of questions, usually centered around disputes between players, about how to take relief from immovable obstructions.
There is a common misconception that when one’s stance or swing suffers interference with an immovable obstruction like a buggy path, one just picks up the ball and drops it back on the fairway side. The nearest point of relief is not the nicest point of relief.
The correct procedure is to simulate the stance and direction of play with the intended club if the obstruction was not there. Then find the nearest point not nearer the hole where the ball could lie taking full relief from the obstruction.
In the image, the ball lies on the right side of the buggy path at A. The distance from A to B is clearly less than the distance from A to C. A right handed player’s nearest point of relief is actually right behind the tree. That is not a favourable outcome as dropping 1 club length from behind the tree still suffers interference from the tree, but it is what the rules stipulate.
Since that is the case, the player may choose to play the ball as it lies, take the free drop on the right side of the tree and hope for a favourable bounce, or under penalty of 1 stroke, declare the ball unplayable, and receive a 2 club relief, which will allow a drop near C.
Since the beginning of August 2016, the lady golfers of NSRCC have been looking forward to their weekly tee and shots on our green fairways, with Ladies Vice Captain Ms Jenny Chong. The fun has not quite ended yet, as there will be a weekly ladies social game on Wednesday afternoons! Contact our Changi Golf team @ 6540 8500 to find out how you can join in!

C aptain’s Cup 2016 was held on 24 September, Saturday at NSRCC Changi. Participants were blessed with weather that was perfect for a game of golf.
The sun was out, but play was made bearable with light wind and fluffy clouds.
However, that did not stay for long. Halfway through the game, the wind and clouds were almost gone, but this did not falter the spirit among participants. One participant, Mr Alvin Lim, even scored a Hole-in-One! After the game, Club Captain, Mr Tan Kah Han hosted dinner at Jumbo Restaurant where golfers were treated to a scrumptious meal.
During the prize presentation ceremony, Captain Tan presented all deserving winners with their prizes. Five participants also went home with lucky draw prizes. Our heartiest congratulations to all the winners! Our biggest thank you goes out to all the participants of Captain’s Cup 2016, till next year!
Congratulations to all winners!
