Pavalan Research scholar, Department of Structural Engineering, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, India R. Sivagamasundari Assistant Professor, Department of Structural Engineering, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, India ABSTRACT The present research work is focused on the tensile properties of basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars of 8 and 10mm-diameters. The tensile properties of these bars were determined according to ASTM D7205/D7205M-06 .In this test, the ends of each BFRP bar specimen were embedded in steel tube filled with 1:1 mixture of epoxy resin and hardener. The tensile test is carried out by gripping the tubes in the conventional wedge friction grips of the universal testing machine. Hence, the tested BFRP bars of 8 and 10mm-diameters were failed due to rupture of fibres. The experimental results showed that the BFRP bars have high tensile strength and low elastic modulus compared with conventional steel bars. INTRODUCTION The corrosion of conventional steel reinforcements create almost all the failures in concrete structures, particularly in harsh environmental conditions. These conditions essentially led the researchers to investigate an alternative technique of using non-corrosive material as reinforcements in concrete structures. Based on the investigations, using different ratios of fibre and resin combination the fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have been prepared. Fibre reinforced polymer bars were used in the construction industries for the last two decades in the development of the civil structures, and in the rehabilitation work of existing concrete structures also. The various types of FRP bars are glass, aramid or Kevlar and carbon [1-4]. Basalt is a natural volcanic rock material which is originated from frozen lava. Basalt fiber is produced in a continuous fabrication process by melting crushed basalt rock at 1500 o C. Basalt
