April 27, 2016 An excruciatingly opinionated guide to the Connecticut Shoreline My favorite holiday is fast approaching! Back in the overwhelming toddler days, I had a hard and fast rule: no cleaning, no cooking, no parenting responsibilities for ONE day. Oh, and brunch. That was the biggie because my little family has a weird distaste for it. Breakfast out? No problem. But chafing dishes filled with soggy pancakes freak my husband out. So once a year we go for it, mainly so I can eat a plateful of bacon. It’s never been about the presents in my house (although I’ve kept every single scribbled card), but now and then a treat is fun, too. This year, the team and I made a list of a few lovelies we’d be happy to receive for Mother’s Day. You may want to forward this along to someone who needs a nudge. love, erica Erica's List: These Are Joggers, not Sweats! I f you’re old enough, you remember the days when you changed into your play clothes when you got home from school (way back when dresses were required in the classroom!). Well, I never stopped. The minute I walk in the door I switch to “cozy” clothes. And these days those cozy clothes are ALWAYS my Hyde joggers. We used to call them sweatpants, but now joggers are a THING. And besides, it sounds so much better than sweats. So what is it that makes these so special? They’re a stretchy, medium weight, organic cotton/lycra blend (hence no bulk), with a slimmish (read not skinny) cropped leg. I, for one, have never looked cute in sweat pants and I do in these. I even wear them OUT OF THE HOUSE. Get yourself a pair in heather gray, dark gray or black at Root Yoga Studio in Old Lyme . I’m getting another. Sizing XS,S,M,L (I’m a size 10 and wear a medium). Normally $75, but say you saw it on the-e-list and take 20% off through Mother's Day, May 8, 2016. More Wishes! Succulents Are Having a Moment Don’t get me wrong. I love a stunning bouquet as much as the next mom. But give that expensive bunch just a few days and it's all over. Not so with succulents. I’m hoping these will remain a centerpiece for the foreseeable future. Although I somehow manage to kill any greenery I get my hands on (That glorious fiddle leaf fig? A sturdy rubber plant? Yup.), I am convinced that this beautiful bowl will make it through the summer. Succulents and arrangement by Marlee at Mar. Floral in Old Saybrook, pricing depends on number of plants. This one, about 12" in diameter, is $80. Hand-thrown bowl by Guy Wolfe available at the Florence Griswold Museum Store. p.s. click below to see Marlee's latest "garden" arrangements. More Flowers! Everything in One Place Log Book I don't know about you, but I can't remember sh&t. Nothing. I read somewhere once that it is the act of walking through the doorway that makes you forget what you walked into a room for, so if you're hanging around my house, you'll see me walking in and out of doorways, hoping that the elusive task will come back to me. My life is one long to-do list, on scraps of paper and scribbled notebooks, left all over the house. Luckily R. J. Julia has solved this problem with this aptly named notebook. Store everything you need at your fingertips in one place, with handy sections for passwords, travel, health, home, items you've loaned and more. Mother's Day problem solver. $12.95 Picnic Perfection Forget Mother’s Day, I’ll be stocking my gift closet with these for the summer host and hostess. Empty an entire bottle of wine in this chic 750 ml Growler and your plonk will remain at drinking temperature all day long. Genius. $28, Urban Outfitters. For Mom Laura's List Black Dress at C&G I can’t get this strappy, vee-neck/vee-back, black number off my mind. It’s the anti-mumu – it fits flatteringly at the top and glides into gobs of forgiving cotton knit fabric at the hem. Pockets on the side seams, too! $165 MIX-ing Bowls What’s better than environmentally sustainable kitchenware? Mix is now carrying this set of 7 nesting bowls that are not only useful and pretty, but earth conscious. Made from bamboo fiber that is biodegradable (will leave no trace in a landfill in 20 years), they’re BPA free, food and dishwasher safe. Time to weed out the plastic! $80 for the set. Our Entire Wish List Aquinnah Jewlery at Jennie Fresa There’s a ton of customized jewelry out there but these vintage bars from local designer Aquinnah, have been calling to me for years now. Offered in 18k matte gold or sterling silver plate, they’re hand stamped with the word/name of your choice and adorned with a teeny crystal ($80). Custom orders take a mere two to three days. Head to Jennie Fresa in Madison for an Aquinnah pop-up and view the whole collection for Mom’s Day shopping, plus take 10% off on Tuesday, May 3rd through Saturday, May 7th. Susan Roberts and CP Shades at Lulu's I love everything at Lulu’s in Guilford. But if I had to pick my favorite, it would be the latest CP Shades slub-knit tee. This is the kind of top I wear to shreds, and have such a tough time parting with, I add it to my tee-shirt quilt (geeky, but true!). Lulu’s has a collection of this looks-good-on-everyone vee neck in classic CP muted shades. And while I’m there, I’ll pair one with local designer Susan Roberts chalcedony necklace for a perfect summer look.
