If, as has been said, the last thing in a book to read is the preface, it may be that the first thing to examine is the index. Certainly no book of reference is worth anything without an index. Stauffer's and Fielding's works on American En- gravers bid fair to remain authoritative, and both are well indexed for engravers and partly indexed for subjects. But engravers are for the most part only copyists; they reproduce on copper, steel or stone the work of another. The late Frank Bulkeley Smith, whose pictures at one time hung on these walls, became very much interested in early American portraiture. It occured to him that much valuable information as to the identity of the painters of early portraits would be obtained from an examination of engraved copies, and he expressed a purpose to prepare such a list. After his death there were enquiries for it from gentlemen in New York and Boston and among his papers was found an Artist Index to Stauffer and Fielding which his sons and daughter presented to this Society as a contribution to the study of art in America. AN ARTIST INDEX TO STAUFFER'S"AMERICAN ENGRAVERS"
BY THOMAS HOVEY GAGE
^ INTRODUCTOKY NOTE
NO more impossible subject upon which to addressthis Society could be found then an "Index"
unless it were the dictionary, or the encylopedia. If,as has been said, the last thing in a book to read is thepreface, it may be that the first thing to examine isthe index. Certainly no book of reference is worthanything without an index.
Stauffer's and Fielding's works on American En-gravers bid fair to remain authoritative, and both arewell indexed for engravers and partly indexed forsubjects. But engravers are for the most part onlycopyists; they reproduce on copper, steel or stone thework of another.
The late Frank Bulkeley Smith, whose pictures atone time hung on these walls, became very muchinterested in early American portraiture. It occuredto him that much valuable information as to theidentity of the painters of early portraits would beobtained from an examination of engraved copies, andhe expressed a purpose to prepare such a list. Afterhis death there were enquiries for it from gentlemen inNew York and Boston and among his papers wasfound an Artist Index to Stauffer and Fielding whichhis sons and daughter presented to this Society as acontribution to the study of art in America.
Stauffer and Fielding do not pretend to bring theirlist down later than to include men who were workingbefore 1825. They therefore deal with the beginnings

of art in America. Now the engraver copies; heseldom originates. When photography made copy-ing easy, his art languished. But when he flourishedhe reproduced the work of artists which appealed to thepublic taste and would sell. There were artists whosechief employment was to supply material for theengravers. In England during the eighteenth andearly nineteenth centuries, portraits were painted forthe express purpose of being engraved. Everyoneknows the fine mezzotints issued by the Fabers, fatherand son. Thomas Hudson must have been keptfairly busy supplying their needs and some of therarest and best impressions of their prints are nowworth as much as the original portraits in oil.
In this country personages were not so much res-pected. There are innumerable prints of a fewpersons of distinction and popularity like Washingtonand Franklin; but we find a brisk business in paintingor drawing scenes and buildings. For example ourindex shows 90 engravings after Birch, father and son, most of them views. Their work was more admiredby Dunlap and Tuckerman than it is by us, althoughsome of Thomas Birch's marine views are still esteemed. It seems quite certain that they painted for theengraver. So we find 35 prints after John Paradise, many of them by his son, John W. Paradise. Dunlaptells us that the Methodists contributed to the elder'semployment as a portrait painter and that most of theengravings in the Methodist Magazine are frompaintings by him.
Those who contend that contemporary judgment ofart is usually wrong will notice that the index givesvery few prints after Copley and only one afterMalbone. But to offset this we find 104 reproductionsof Gilbert Stuart and 42 of Thomas Sully. Thereare also 40 prints after Joseph Ward, 33 after Neagle,23 after Inman and 11 after Henry Williams, includingone of Isaiah Thomas.
1920.] Index to Stauffer's "American Engravers" 297
The student will be glad to know that GeorgeCatlin, besides painting Indians, haade portraits ofDeWitt Clinton, Timothy Pickering and TappingReeve. There are also listed 15 portraits or miniaturesby William M. S. Doyle or his daughter Margaret (oneof Isaiah Thomas among them). One wonders whyDoyle's portrait of Harriet Newell should have beenengraved by three different engravers. The inscrip-tion on Ralph Rawdon's plate discloses that she diedat Port Louis in the Isle of France, November 30,1812,in the 20th year of her age, having accompanied herhusband in the benevolent attempt to preach Christto the heathen. The inference is irresistible that thereproductions were to embellish missionary tracts.
The versatile Peale family is well represented in theindex. There are engravings from the work of CharlesWilson, Rembrandt, Titian, Anna, James and Raphael. These brief references will show the sort of informa-tion to be found in this Artist Index. Of course, comparatively few portraits were ever engraved, butwith this index and access to a good collection ofAmerican prints like the Goodspeed collection ownedby the Worcester Art Museum, enough authenticatedwork of early artists can be identified to afford thestudent and collector some basis for attributions to begiven early American paintings.
This index also suggests a subject which has neveryet received any attention. I refer to the itinerantportrait painters. They were interesting and pic-turesque personalities who have preserved for us theforms, features and dress of the people of their day. They were self-taught or received some meagerinstruction from one of the craft. Some of them, likeMorse and Harding and Greenwood, settled down tocareers of distinction; but most of them lived andworked in obscurity. In the small classes graduatingat Dartmouth College in the year 1806 and 1807 therewere three young men who became itinerant painters. One wonders what infiuence directed them, for, so far
298 American Antiquarian Society [Oct.,
as is known, there was absolutely nothing at the timein that outpost of education to stir the artisticimagination.
A few years ago I talked with a very old lady, thedaughter of one of these itinerant painters, andlearned from her somewhat of her father's life. Therewere no supply houses then, and in the winter he pre-pared his own canvases, stretchers and panels andmost important of all ground his own colors in oil andso prepared his paints. In the summer he set out, avoiding large places and cities and keeping to thecountryside. He stopped with the farmers and inreturn for his keep, and such modest sums as theycould pay, he painted the family. I have seen manyexamples of his work. Some of it is as hard and coldand stiff as the hospitality and pay were meager.Sometimes, however, he reflected, in the warmth of hiscolor and ambitious attempt to vitalize the subject, the cheer and sociability of a happy home. So- theywandered about, bringing the mysteries of the art intothe family circle. Once in a while, either because theysatisfied their own standards or because of the import-ance of the subject, or because the compensation andhospitality were generous, they signed and dated aportrait. But this was rare. For the most part theyleft it to speak for itself.
