Oregon Repertory Singers | An Afternoon with Eric Whitacre 1

Welcome Welcome to our final concert of Oregon Repertory Singers’ 48th season. I am especially excited about this concert, not only because the one and only Eric Whitacre is here in Portland, but because it showcases the talent and passion of the whole organization, bringing together our two programs for an exceptional collaborative experience. I am proud of the resiliency of ORS and ORS Youth Choir under the leadership of artistic directors Ethan Sperry and Aubrey Patterson. Together, they have imagined, programmed and executed a season that—despite all the changes in the world around us—gave us a taste of normalcy, but also aspired to new levels of innovation; allowing us to continue to fulfill our mission of enriching the community through choral music.

As we returned to live performances this season, ORS anticipated it would be a year of rebuilding, but instead we found ourselves elevated and repositioned with forward momentum. We would not be in this place without your support. Thank you to our loyal supporters and donors, GEMS (Give Every Month Supporters), Music Literature Supporters, Director Circle Members, volunteers, and patrons (in-person and digital)! You believed in us and encouraged us to explore all the ways we can continue to bring outstanding choral experiences to our great city.

I hope you enjoy today’s performance and all that it represents for our organization and our community.

With gratitude, Lauren Bryan Executive Director

Oregon Repertory Singers | An Afternoon with Eric Whitacre4

In 1999, when I was studying for my doctoral degree, I attended the National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Chicago. My colleagues and I went to hear The St. Olaf Choir under the direction of Dr. Anton Armstrong. They sang J.S. Bach’s Lobet dem Herrn and the Penderecki Stabat Mater, both well-known and challenging works. And then they performed Water Night by an unknown 29-year-old composer named Eric Whitacre and the entire choral world was changed forever.

Eric Whitacre has talked from the TED stage about how he walked into his first choir rehearsal in college hearing in black and white, and after ninety minutes rehearsing Mozart’s Requiem he walked out hearing in color. For my generation and those since, Eric’s music has opened our ears in the same way to an entire palette of choral sounds that had not been used to its fullest.

Whitacre’s music has been a staple of Oregon Repertory Singers’ programming since the early 2000’s. Under Gil Seeley’s leadership, the ensemble was one of the first to perform his mini opera Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine, perhaps Eric’s most virtuosic composition. However, this weekend is the first time we have been able to share the stage with him and let him lead us in many of his greatest compositions. I am so glad we can feature our Youth Choir with their new amazing Artistic Director Aubrey Patterson alongside our adult choir in these concerts!

Eric’s music is best known for his use of expanded harmonies and lush tone clusters, especially in his slower pieces like Water Night, Sleep, and Lux Aurumque. But Eric’s longer works like Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine and faster works like With a Lily in Your Hand show a real flare for rhythmic drama, and the ability to change key so quickly that the music is almost pandiatonic—seemingly at home in any key. And now a younger generation of choral composers has grown up with Eric Whitacre as a constant presence in their ears. Nowhere is this more obvious to me than in the recent explosion of choral singing in Southeast Asia. I hope you come away understanding what a global impact great music can have in this day and age.

Thank you for almost 25 years of continuous inspiration Eric, and welcome to the Oregon Repertory Singers family!

Ethan Sperry Artistic Director & Conductor

Oregon Repertory Singers | An Afternoon with Eric Whitacre 5

Program NotesOur youth choir is thrilled to join the adult choir on stage under the baton of Eric Whitacre for you this evening! Today we represent singers from eight school districts and 23 schools. Our invitational honor choir has included 4 evening rehearsals, culminating in this weekend’s performances.

We continue our musical journey through Asia with a visit to Indonesia and a nod to the traditional Malay dances of Singapore with Ken Steven’s Hentakan Jiwa. I first premiered this work in 2017 with Corvallis High School prior to it being published with earthsongs music, and its vibrant pulsing energy and unique solo have long been a favorite. We are excited to perform Hentakan Jiwa for you!

Eric Whitacre’s fabulous catalog of choral music presented a range of choices for our youth choir, but one jumped out as I was programming. Choir directors and singers felt adrift and separated from our communities as we moved to create a facsimile of our choir families over Zoom in 2020. Whitacre composed a work to heal the hearts of the singing community entitled Sing Gently. My good friends and colleagues shared the experience of learning and performing this work for his Virtual Choir 6, sharing tears of grief mixed with the joy of singing together again, virtually. Sing Gently is a beautifully appropriate text to perform as we return to the stage and our singing communities.

May we sing together, always.May our voice be softMay our singing be music for othersAnd may it keep others aloft.

Water Night Music by Eric WhitacrePoem by Octavio PazTranslation by Muriel Rukeyser

Night with the eyes of a horse that trembles in the night,

night with eyes of water in the field asleep

is in your eyes, a horse that trembles,is in your eyes of secret water.

Eyes of shadow-water,eyes of well-water, eyes of dream-water.

Silence and solitude, two little animals moon-led,drink in your eyes, drink in those waters.

A Puppet’s Dream Words and Music by Darius Lim

A bright and shining flowerThe little forest showerThe sun that shines and marvelsThe night that brings the owls

Dance in the woodsMake a merry laughterOh, dance in the woodsDance a little faster

The light of the dawn has a secretthat many would not knowthat it hears where the night goesand where the starry sky hides the

moon on high

If you open your eyes, night opens, doors of musk, the secret kingdom of the water opensflowing from the center of the night.

And if you close your eyes,a river fills you from within, flows forward, darkens you:night brings its wetness to beaches

in your soul.

Shining hills and streamsand the showers in the sunlightFading stars at sightand the moonlight still in silence

Dance and stomp a little fasterDance for joy,Dance for the laughter

Dance lightly, dance swiftlyDance in the woods sweetlyDance!

Te mane laudum carmine,

te deprecemur vespere:te nostra supplex gloriaper cuncta laudet saecula.

Thee in the morning with song of praises,

thee let us beseech in the evening;thee may our suppliant glorypraise through all ages.

Leonardo Dreams of His Flying MachineMusic by Eric WhitacreLibretto bréve by Charles A. Silvestri

Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine…

Tormented by visions of flight and falling,More wondrous and terrible each than the last,Master Leonardo imagines an engineTo carry a man up into the sun…

And as he’s dreaming the heavens call him,Softly whispering their siren-song:

“Leonardo. Leonardo, vieni à volare.”

L’uomo colle sua congiegniate e grandi ale,

facciendo forza contro alla resistente aria.

IILeonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine…

As the candles burn low he paces and writes,Releasing purchased pigeons one by oneInto the golden Tuscan sunrise…

And as he dreams, again the calling,The very air itself gives voice:

“Leonardo. Leonardo, vieni à volare.”

Vicina all’ elemento del fuoco…

Scratching quill on crumpled paper(Rete, canna, filo, carta)Images of wing and frame and fabric

fastened tightly…sulla suprema sottile aria

IIIMaster Leonardo Da Vinci Dreams of his Flying Machine…

As the midnight watchtower tolls,Over rooftop, street and dome,The triumph of a human being ascendingIn the dreaming of a mortal man.

Leonardo steels himself,Takes one last breath, and leaps….

“Leonardo vieni à volare! Leonardo, Sognare!”

“Leonardo. Leonardo, come fly”

A man with wings large enough and duly connected

might learn to overcome the resistance of the air.

“Leonardo. Leonardo, come fly”

Close to the sphere of elemental fire…

(Net, cane, thread, paper.)

…in the highest and rarest atmosphere.

“Leonardo, come fly! Leonardo, dream!”

Sing GentlyWords and Music by Eric Whitacre

May we sing together, always.May our voice be soft.May our singing be music for othersand may it keep others aloft.

Sing gently, always.Sing gently as one.

SleepMusic by Eric WhitacrePoem by Charles A. Silvestri

The evening hangs beneath the moon,

A silver thread on darkened dune. With closing eyes and resting headI know that sleep is coming soon.

Upon my pillow, safe in bed,A thousand pictures fill my head.I cannot sleep, my mind’s a-flight;And yet my limbs seem made

of lead.

May we stand together, always.May our voice be strong.May we hear the singing andMay we always sing along.

Sing gently, always.Sing gently as one.

If there are noises in the night,A frightening shadow, flickering light,Then I surrender unto sleep,Where clouds of dream give

second sight,

What dreams may come, both dark and deep,

Of flying wings and soaring leapAs I surrender unto sleep,As I surrender unto sleep.

Guest Artist Eric Whitacre | Guest Conductor

Grammy Award-winning composer and conductor, Eric Whitacre, is among today’s most popular musicians. His works are programmed worldwide and his ground-breaking Virtual Choirs have united 100,000 singers from more than 145 countries over the last decade. Born in Nevada in 1970, Eric is a graduate of the prestigious Juilliard School of Music (New York). He is currently Visiting Composer at Pembroke College, Cambridge and recently completed his second term as Artist in Residence with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. In 2022, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra will premiere a new work for orchestra, Prelude in C.

Eric’s compositions have been widely recorded and his debut album as a conductor on Universal, Light and Gold, went straight to the top of the charts, earning a Grammy. As a guest conductor he has drawn capacity audiences to concerts with many of the world’s leading orchestras and choirs in venues from Carnegie Hall (New York) to the Royal Albert Hall (London). Insatiably curious and a lover of all types of music, Eric has worked with legendary Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer, as well as British pop icons Laura Mvula, Imogen Heap and Annie Lennox.

His composition, Deep Field, was inspired by the achievements of the Hubble Space Telescope and became the foundation for a pioneering collaboration with NASA, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and film-makers 59 Productions. His long-form work The Sacred Veil, a profound meditation on love, life and loss, was premiered by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, conducted by the composer, and released on Signum Records. In 2021, Eric launched the Virtual School with its first course “The Beautiful Mess: Masterclass in Composition and Creativity”.

A charismatic speaker, Eric Whitacre has given keynote addresses for TED, Apple, Google, the United Nations Speaker’s Program, in education and for numerous global institutions. His collaboration with Spitfire Audio resulted in a trail-blazing vocal sample library which became an instant best-seller and is used by composers the world-over. Eric is proud to be a Yamaha Artist.

Support Your Singers Invest in what makes your heart sing! Loyal friends like you make it possible for Oregon Repertory Singers to provide extraordinary and meaningful concert experiences, and valuable music education opportunities for our singers, supporters, and community.

This season, adapting our programming for both our adult and youth choir programs into a hybrid model has brought upon great opportunity and expanded access. However, expenses of rehearsals and performances are combined with digital delivery and COVID safety procedures, and that comes at a cost. This new model of operation emphasizes the challenge arts organizations like ours are faced with: doing more with less.

Our adult and youth choir programs will survive because of your generous giving, program enrollment, concert patronage and enthusiastic support—a trifecta for success!

Your donation will support our ability to continue to evolve and provide vibrant programs as we face new challenges and engage in new opportunities.

YES! I want to support Oregon Repertory Singers!

She spent seven years at Corvallis High School, restructuring and cultivating a choral program that won the choir state championship in 2015, 2016, and 2017, and was invited to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Northwest Conference.

Patterson is in her fifth year as director of choirs at West Linn High School, growing the program to create a full-time, comprehensive choral curriculum at a 6A high school. Her program earned its last state title in 2019 (pre-Covid). Internationally, Ms. Patterson has served as director of choirs at the Sichuan, China Conservatory of Music summer camp, and the assistant director of the Oregon Ambassadors of Music Europe tour.

Patterson is the youngest ever Oregon-certified choral adjudicator and enjoys adjudicating, clinician work, and premiering new and commissioned works with her ensembles. She was the associate director of Corvallis Repertory Singers with Dr. Steven Zielke during her time in Corvallis and is the inaugural recipient of the Young Conductor Award from Oregon ACDA. Her passions include developing strong music literacy skills, working with singers of all ages, selecting innovative repertoire that builds empathy and understanding, establishing a choir culture that fosters leadership and collaboration, and using music to build strong communities.

Stacey Philipps | Composer-in-Residence

Stacey Philipps writes music to share the thrill of creation, collaboration, and performance. An early and new-music devotee, Philipps is a multi-instrumentalist and lifelong singer currently in the alto section of the Oregon Repertory Singers. From the sounds of the mountain dulcimer, drum set, ukulele, piano, and banjo in her studio to the wish list of harpsichord, viola da gamba, and crotales, Philipps also draws inspiration from mythology, documentaries, fairy tales, current events, personal narratives, and poetry, along with modal harmonies, folk songs, hymns, shape note music, and the melodic and rhythmic elements of the world around her.

Her music for choirs, chamber ensembles, soloists, and orchestras has been performed across the country, and she holds degrees in composition from Portland State University and in philosophy from St. John’s College, Santa Fe. A finalist for the American Choral Directors Association Genesis Prize, ASCAP Plus award recipient, and third place winner of the American Prize Short Choral Division, Philipps is also a member of the American Composers Forum, the American Choral Directors Association, and ASCAP, as well as the proprietor of Sirensong Publishing, the primary distributor of her work.

Annie Kubitschek | Instructor

Annie (she/her) has been teaching in Oregon schools for the past seven years. She received her Bachelors of Music in Music Education from Chapman University and her Master of Arts in teaching from Oregon State University. In her time at Wilsonville High School, her choirs have competed nationally at the Lincoln Center in New York and have placed in the top 5 in the OSAA State Championships.

Her festival choir has repeatedly earned first place in sight reading. Annie is passionate about music literacy and empowering students of all ages to be independent musicians and active members of their choral community. Currently, she serves as the Treasurer for the Oregon American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Annie sings as a section leader and cantor at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, with the professional vocal ensemble Resonance and Oregon Repertory Singers, and can be heard on professional recordings with the Oregon Catholic Press.
