DescriptionThis inspirational poster is my example of a montage involvingtwo or more images and typography.

    Programs/ToolsAdobe Photoshop

ObjectivesUse the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant messageLearn to blend two or more images together gradually, usingmasks, and then use a mask to apply a filter to one part of theimage

Apply typography principles. Small copy & Title with varying textsize. Theme word(s)

    Select good quality images

ProcessI started by gathering images to use for my project. I knew Iwanted to do something with music sheets, so Let it Go was theperfect song to use since it has a strong message. This project

was created using Adobe Photoshop. First, I started with theimage of Elsa in the background and positioned her on one ofthe third gridlines. Then I added in the music sheet, but having itstraight seemed too boring, so I turned it and positioned the titleon another third line. Using a mask, I painted the music sheet sothat it would gradually blend into the picture. For the backgroundpicture, I then added the Diffuse Glow filter from the filter gallery.Lastly, I added in the title, using a drop shadow and then madesome small adjustments based on critiques.

DescriptionThis project was meant to show good photography and imageediting skills, using the colors in the image to create a poster.

    Date5/24/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsAdobe Photoshop

ObjectivesChoose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, andthen incorporate the colors into the layout.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image and then download it.

Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool onseparate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)

Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements inPhotoshop.

ProcessI edited the photo the way I wanted using levels, vibrancy, selective color enhancement, and sharpness. I also reduced alittle of the noise caused by my camera and used the spot healingbrush to get rid of some scratches on the desk.

In Photoshop, the first thing I did was created swatches forthe colors I wanted. I added the lighter red to reduce contrastwith the title and image. I made boxes around the image andpurposefully misaligned them, and then I created the title, aligningit with the top of the boxes. I also added the boxes in the top leftcorner to help add repetition and proper grouping. I also addedthe stripes on the bottom to repeat the dark red, and then skewedthose shapes for consistency. Lastly, I added a light gradient tothe background to put more focus on the word Simple.

DescriptionThis project was to create a flier in Microsoft Word for a realevent involving a benefactor and beneficiary.

    Date5/17/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsMicrosoft Word

ObjectivesComprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

    Find, scan and import a high-quality image.Create a full-bleed design.

Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for yourmessage and audience.

Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobeprograms, including Photoshop.

ProcessI created this event ad in Microsoft Word on a Mac. I couldntcreate it on my PC because the PC version of Microsoft Worddoesnt have a publishing layout view and it would ruin my layoutto switch back and forth (which I learned the hard way). I added

in my scanned image (printed from the Internet onto photopaper) and used words photo editing tools to fix it up a little. Then I added in all of the text for the flier (which was given tome since I asked if anyone would like a flier made for them). That was probably the most difficult part because there was somuch text. Elimination ended up being a huge step in the finalizingprocess. I had to practice the FOCUS principles again; keepingthings aligned and grouped together, using proper color schemesand repetition, etc. It took quite a few hours to get this one right, but Im satisfied. Lastly, it was converted into a PDF, printed, andsaved as a jpg for this blog post.

DescriptionA two sided (duplex) folded brochure.

    Date7/12/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsAdobe InDesign ( and Photoshop)

ObjectivesSet up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.

Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four qualityimages (Not including the logo). One should be clipped inPhotoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows thecutout shape of the image.

Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least threeparagraphs, headers, and sub headers.

Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

ProcessThis brochure was created in Adobe InDesign. I create two pages(inside and outside) and placed my images and body copy intothe document. I added an inner shadow to my logo and added

a watermark of the logo to my about me picture in AdobePhotoshop. I added shapes and HTML tags to make it reflectboth the logo and topic and they added in repetition as well. Iplaced my objects to create a proper flow and used the colorsto help with contrast, so the eyes are drawn to the top rightcorner on the inside. I made sure everything was aligned and Iadded in a text wrap on all of my images to make the body copymove around the edges. I had to align my edges where I wantthe brochure to fold as well because I plan to cut off the edge ofthe front so the green shape can be seen.

DescriptionA web page designed using HTML and CSS to showcase apersonally created logo.

    Date6/28/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsTextWrangler, Dreamweaver, Firefox (inspect element)

ObjectivesSize and optimize an original logo for a web page so the longside is 300 500 pixels.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo andhow it appeals to a target audience.

Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content.

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS.

Identify hex colors for web design.

Open your HTML page in a web browser, and capture a qualityscreen shot with .5-inch margins for printing.

ProcessI created the HTML and CSS for this web page using

TextWrangler and Dreamweaver. I validated the HTML too, byusing W3 schools HTML validator. This wasnt my first website, soI used inspect element in Firefox to edit my linked CSS style sheeta lot. I made my background using Photoshop Elements on mypersonal computer (it wasnt required), but the logo was madein Illustrator. I used its colors for the headings, links, borders, andfooter. I used Verdana and Palatino Linotype for my headingsand body copy, respectively, and I had backups in case thebrowser didnt support them. I used padding and margins to helpwith my white space, and I added a div tag to the HTML to wrapmy content and make my layout asymmetrical.

DescriptionA black and white flier for a fictional event. We were given theinformation and logo, as well as a group of pictures to choosefrom, but the design was all up to us.

    Date5/11/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsAdobe InDesign

ObjectivesApply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign documentto keep links in InDesign intact.

ProcessThe only program used to create this flier was Adobe InDesignfrom the Creative Cloud. I started with drawing simpleshapes like squares and lines, both as part of the design andas placeholders for the information to come. I had to use therulers quite a bit to make sure I was aligning everything right.Next came the information. After adding in my title, body copy, and images, I spent a lot of time trying to pick out fonts andtheir sizes, align the text right, crop/align my main image, fix anywidows, and group elements to control the white space. Aftergetting everything somewhat satisfactory, a lab assistant pointedout that I had too many of those small boxes all over the page, soI had to do quite a bit of simplifying.

After going to class to get our draft critiqued, I found a fewmore small things to fix, like weirdly grouped white-space or aboring font. I did more re-arranging and finally got it to where itis now.

DescriptionMatching stationery and business card for a new logo I created.

    Date6/14/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsAdobe InDesign and Illustrator

ObjectivesCreate a new, original logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use

your new logo to design two stationery items with consistentdesign. (Photos are okay on stationery.)

    Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 (full-bleed optional, but trim only .125)

Apply typography rules keeping small copy.

Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks and dropshadows light and white space.

    Apply contact information.

ProcessThe first and hardest step was creating the new logo, which Idid in Illustrator. I also created the borders on my stationery in

Illustrator, using the line tool using the charcoal feather brush(same brush used in the logo). I painted over it a little just tosmooth it out and make it my own.

In InDesign, I placed my logo twice on the letterhead (displayedat high quality). The second logo placed on the stationery wasused for the watermark and is at 4% opacity. Then I added thecontact information on bottom of the page and then placed mylines drawn under it and along the side of the page at 10% opacityso they would not distract from any print that would go on thepage. I added in the lines to create a circular visual flow.

DescriptionThe goal of this project was to create 3 different logos for thesame company.

    Date6/7/14

    Course/InstructorComm130 - Section 2 / Julie Peterson

    Programs/ToolsAdobe Illustrator

ObjectivesCreate three completely different, original logos to fit acompany or personal image that will appeal to the audience.

Use only the tools to create and draw your logos.

Gather opinions from at least ten outside sources about whichlogo appeals most to them

ProcessFor this project, I started by doing sketches to get some ideasin my head for possible logos. Next, I implemented my ideas inIllustrator.

For the first logo, its just a bunch of shapes and lines drawnusing the pen tool. My goal was to make a trademark logo usingshapes. After putting up a poll on Facebook, this was the obvious

favorite by far.The second logo, I mostly wanted to just be type, and it is alongwith the one shape and two symbols. Since I used a popular fontfor HTML, I added in the HTML brackets using the pen tool.

The third logo is an illustration of an Android phone usingsymbols and some text. The phone was a simple roundedrectangle shape, with another one inside and filled with color. Iadded in HTML brackets using the pen tool again, but made themthicker to add contrast. Lastly, I added some finishing touchesusing drop shadows and a small amount of feathering on theinside rectangle.
