Thailand can be developed into a high-income country due to its location in Asia where the economic growth rate has been increasing continuously. It is proven that the 19th century was known as the “British Century” and the 20th century was known as the “American Century.” The 21st century was predicted to be the “Asian Century” thus giving the Thai economy opportunities to expand in a number of ways.
“An opportunity to reach the big markets”
The Asian Development Bank estimated that Asia will be the biggest economy
in the world. The GDP of Asia is likely to increase to 52 percent of the world’s GDP in 2050. Also, the GDP of the new market will triple and accounted for 46 percent of the world’s GDP. The GDP of China and India in particular would represent 30 percent of the world’s GDP.
For Thailand, the opening of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 which allows free markets will give Thailand a chance to export more products to the Southeast Asian market. The AEC plans to expand the market in China, Japan, and South Korea under the ASEAN +3, and with India, Australia and New Zealand as ASEAN +6 as well. With advance preparations, China has declared the 12th
economic development plan and changed would be made from the dependence on foreign investment policy to reliance on the domestic consumption. This would allow Thailand to gain more chances to expand their market into China using this policy. So, China will become the main market of Thailand replacing U.S. and Europe.
“An opportunity to reach consumers with high purchasing power”The majority of population in Asia tends to be the middle class having purchasing powers. Many studies claimed that the middle class population will increase to 2 – 3 billion people in the next 20 years from 1.8 billion people in 2009. Of these, more than half are in the Asia-Pacific. The enlargement of the middle class will be a cause of change in consump-tion patterns, from consumption for necessity of life to consumption for other purposes. Usually, people demand cheaper goods but now they have begun to desire more high-quality goods. As a result, the market demand for more variety of goods is an opportunity for Thailand. Even though Thailand
Dr Kriengsak Chareonwongsak Senior Fellow, Harvard KennedyS-
Thailand’s Difficulties in Moving towards a High-Income Economy
is losing its advantages in export of primary and cheap products, it can still produce a diversity of goods and the quality of Thai export products has been accepted by its neighboring countries.
“An opportunity for direct foreign investment”The countries in Asia including Thailand have chances to gain investments from other countries with the following reasons. Firstly, Asia has an expanding and large market while the Western market has lower growth rate. Secondly, Degree of openness between Asian countries tend to increase which attracts foreign investors. Thirdly, Asian investors are more likely to invest in neighboring countries in order to seek new business opportunities and to move a production base to lower-cost locations. Finally, powerful countries like Japan and China are competing to have more influence in Southeast Asia as we can see Japanese and Chinese government have given financial aids and financial capital continuously for many Southeast Asian countries. At the same time, the U.S also pays more attention to these countries as well.
“An opportunity to develop new economic zones”The development of the transportation infrastructures to connect between countries will lead to the development of the new economic zones and the development of areas and communities along these lines as well. It is predicted that the AEC will invest in the infrastructures for up to 8 trillion U.S. dollars in
‘amthai’
the next 10 years. This could be the greatest opportunity for Thailand because these projects will cost a lot of money to build and operate. Therefore, the benefits will be with compa-nies like the consultants, explorers, designers, contractors, construction makers, real estate’s developer company, and small entrepreneurs.
About the transportation infrastructures connec-tion, there are 3 ways of ASEAN to connect. Firstly, the physical connection such as the infrastructures of transportation plan in ground, water, and air. Also, energy like electricity lines and natural gas tubes and the network of information technology are also a part of the infrastructure of information technology. Secondly, the connection of laws and regulations. For example, to liberalize and facilitate trade, investment and service, to facilitate cross-border movement of goods and multimodal transport and to simplify the customs declaration procedures. Thirdly, the link between people. For example, to promote the study of languages in ASEAN countries as the third language, to support the exchange of the education system, the promotion of travelling in ASEAN and the exceptional Visa system.
“An opportunity to become a regional hub”The AEC makes Thailand a door to ASEAN because Thailand is located in the central of Southeast Asia which can connect many neighboring countries. Thus, Thailand has the potential to be the center in many dimensions such as:
Trade and logistics hub. The development of infrastructures will support Thailand to be trade and logistics hub of this region. Here is an example: 1) the Pan-Asia railway. It consists of 3 main routes which China plans to connect their railway system from Kunming to Myanmar, Lao, Vietnam, and Cambodia. To make a complete and perfect connection, all 3 main roads need to connect to the Thai railway system. 2) The motor ways and the railway connected between Dawei Port and Laem Chabang Port. There is also a plan to expand this route from Vietnam and Cambodia which can shorten the distance of transporta-tion for 3,500 kilometers as shipping don’t have to go through the Strait of Malacca.
Tourism hub. In this area, Thailand has a chance to be the tourism hub because Bangkok has won the best city for tourists for a number of years because of variety of tourisms resources, a unique history and culture, a great service with a low budget tour and the availability of facilities provided. For now, number of tourists in Thailand is in the second rank in ASEAN after Malaysia. Many of the tourists come from western countries. When the infrastructures that connect between ASEAN countries is done, number of tourists in
Thailand will increase because Thailand is a center of tourism and travel in this region. Medical, health and beauty hub. Thailand has the potential to be a central medical, health and beauty hub because there are many first-class medical schools and private hospitals that are successful in providing medical services to many foreign people, the international standard beauty center with the potential doctors, and all comes with great service and a reason-able price. In conclusion, Thailand has a big chance to be a high-income country. However, will Thailand be able to grab this opportunity depends on the right policy strategy as well as the government with good governance, the strong private sector, and the citizens to work to prepare, plan, and achieve it together.
by democracy from the West. So that a group of soldiers calling themselves “Kana Raatdadoon” staged a coup d’ etat from absolute Monarchy to democracy on 24th June 1932. This was relevant as King Prajadhipok planned to give the democracy to his people.
There was issued a temporally Constitution on 27th June 1932. It contained supreme power of administration. It is used by a person or a group of persons, such as the king, the House Representative, the Com-mittee of the House Representative, and the Court. This means that the Monarchic Institution is still carried on, and the king is a supreme leader of the country. On administrative work, the committee of the house of representation responds on behalf of the king. Apart from this the house of representative has authority in legislative power by the king’s signature, before is-sued. The house of representation has extreme power during the change.
Until the 10th December 1932, King Prajadhipok gave a Permanent Consti-tution. This Permanent Constitution had differences from the first Constitution, such as changed the former regime to the house of parliament regime. This Constitu-tion made the king figurehead, but he had
power to appointed the cabinet to govern the country. The cabinet had to responsible to govern. The parliament had a role to issue the legislation and control the cabinet. The Monarch and the cabinet together as a government have the authority to dissolve the parliament if necessary.
ConclusionAfter H.M. King Prajadhipok abdicated on 2nd March 1934, he turned to use his former name as Somdej Phra Choa Nong Ya Thor Kom Luang Sukhothai Dham-maraja, and reside at the house he bought in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. Later, Queen Rambpai Panni went to reside with him. The Royal couple led a quiet life, avoiding politics until he passed away from heart failure on 30th of May 1941.
H.M King Prajadhipok was the only King in Thai history who died in a foreign land. The Queen arranged a quiet cremation at

Thus government recognize the 10th December yearly is the Constitution Day. On this day, they are together with Royal ceremony and State ceremony at the Ananta Samagom Palace. Flowers are laid in respect to the H.M. King Prajadhipok’s monument situated at the Parliament.
The reason for the changed administration After the first world war, Thailand was affected by the world’s economic decline. King Prajadhipok solved the economy problem by issuing regula-tions regarding income tax, land tax, etc. He also reduced a number of state service officers. This could cause civil servants and people displeasure. At that time, Thailand was influenced

facebook.com/amthaipaperamthaipaper Volunteer at Chaipattana
All the Thais have been well aware of and have fully realized that His Majesty the King is the center of love and loyalty of the people from all walks of life. Through the years, His Majesty has devoted His strength, wisdom, time and financial support, as well as worked and taken part in activities for the development of the country and assistance to the deprived. However, the implementation of development projects, at times, faces some restrictions such as budget constraints, procedural problems etc., which therefore desenabled them to consistently serve the needs of the people according to the urgency required. His Majesty the King, therefore, initiated the establishment of the Chaipattana Foundation, aiming to help His people through development activities in various forms were help can also be given in other ways that truly benefit the people and that are not affected by time constraint.
Once again, I am delighted to be given the opportunity to volunteer for the
Chaipattana Foundation, and I consider it a privilege to have been involved in the estimable work of the Foundation. On this occasion, I was assigned to teach at Kuraburi Chaipattana Pittayakom School (KCP) and Toongrak Chaipat School in Kuraburi, Phang Nga.
Tang Mo (Water Melon) FairThis is an annual fair. All staff from the LFP were present every night. I enjoyed helping in the evening. The shrimp paste won second prize this year (having come first last year!). There were also fish cakes; bananas dried by the solar oven; fish puffs, kanom jeen nam ya - and of course, “shrimp paste” on sale! I must admit that I have never, in my life, sold anything previ-ously so this was very much a “learning curve” for me. I was so delighted to be able to help and work with such a com-mitted and enthusiastic team – and it was noticeable how many foreigners visited the fayre each evening. One gentleman, for example, was very kind, - he was staying in Kuraburi for one night, but whatever I explained to him about any particular item he wanted to buy it! I felt obliged, how-ever, to advise him against buying shrimp paste as I felt it would have been difficult for him to make the sauce from it!
Although we all worked hard we did not notice it so much because of the fun and satisfaction we had in undertaking our duties and commitments.
I have now been told that, because of the help I rendered, they were able to sell a lot more items this year than last year. Though I am gratified by the compliment, I am sure it was only because the teachers, students and parents from both schools helped to buy so many different items which were put on sale.
Study Tour The Saturday before I left Kuraburi, the children in Mattayom 6 went to Nail Island (Koh Tapou) which we all know as “James Bond Island”. I was fortunate to be able to accompany them because the children in the village were pre-occupied with something else that day as there was no teaching in the village that Saturday. I was amazed to notice just how little the island had changed since my last visit. The students and all the teachers were lovely, and I enjoyed their company.
I would like to commend and congratulate the students who worked so hard during the three months I was amongst them. They had to learn the vocabularies by heart as well as practise speaking in different contexts, such as in the markets, and everything they encountered there: meeting tourists at the airport and conveying them to the hotel and conducting the tourists to different islands. They were also given knowledge of Surin and Prathorng Islands. They had to learn about Kuraburi itself. Even the quietest among them, they too, eventually, “came out of their shells”.
Two students in particular I would like to mention here are: Jirapat who wrote and learnt every word I mentioned in class, even the story of Christmas, Easter. Jirapat was capable of speaking about the whole of a particular event in front of the class, as well as translating the story back to all her friends. As for Puangchompoo, another able student, she is competent enough to take a foreign visitor to see around her school. Class 5/4 is also worthy of men-tion. Every one paid attention the whole time and eventually, I was able to con-verse with them (slowly) in English. There were quiet students too, but even these, I discovered, were very able when they gained in confidence.

Dozo restaurant uses fresh high quality made products and ingredients.
It serves sushi, sashimi, bento box, ramen, and soup. We came to Dozo because it was recommended by a friend, and we were glad that we did. The menu is vast, with options to suit everyone, including vegetarians. I particularly enjoyed the sushi rolls, they were fantastic and inexpensive. The service is efficient and the atmosphere is good. Would definitely recommend!

My name is Anuj Bahri and I am the managing director of Trayvale Travel. I recently visited Bangkok, Thailand to attend Thailand Travel Market, which takes place every year in Impact Exhibition Centre held from 3th-7th June. This is the second consecutive time I have been formally invited by Tourism Authority of Thailand to be part of the UK Team. Over the course of 4 days I was very keen to meet hoteliers, entertainment companies, tourist companies and airlines for us to obtain discounted deals for our customers to enjoy. Trayvale Travel plays a key part of increasing tourism between United Kingdom and Thailand and I was delighted to be selected and taken by Tourism Authority of Thailand UK to be a part in this prestigious event which invited over 300 buyers from around the world to meet over 900 sellers across Thailand.
Trayvale Travel is one of the leading specialists for Thailand, a travel agency
specializing in Muay Thai Boxing holiday packages. These holidays are for people who wish to learn the art of Muay Thai, keep fit, lose weight, distress or learn self-defense whilst having a holiday in Thailand. I have been learning Muay Thai myself for the last three years and it has become my passion. This in turn has
enabled me to create good connections within the sport in Thailand for my business, a sport which has only grown in popularity over the years. I am now the UK’s leading Muay Thai and sports tour operator for Thailand. Our packages include Muay Thai training with our selected camps across Thailand, accommodation ranging from budget to luxury resorts and discounted flights. Our clients consist from family holiday makers to UK ranked British and European champions. Trayvale Travel can design your holiday keeping you fit too!
I flew out to Thailand on Thai Airways on the 31st May from London. Within the first half an hour in Bangkok it was soon apparent that it was a safe and peaceful place to be. There was no sign of the military or police anywhere. On my way to Sukuviumvit I asked my taxi driver how things were since Thailand had announced Martial Law and he just replied “mai pen rai” which means no problems. Local people went on about their daily lives and continued as normal until the curfew set in. It did mean that people had to close their shops early and streets went quiet but there was no sign of any trouble by locals or any pressure from the military. This was very refreshing to know. I checked into the luxurious 5 star hotel
Centra Grand which sat on top of one of Bangkok’s well known shopping malls near Siam and Chit Lom station. My time in Bangkok from start to finish was very well planned by TTM+2014 and Tourism Authority of Thailand ensuring that my stay was comfortable.
During the TTM+2014 I had meetings with over 40 Hoteliers and tour companies. It was a great way to discuss our marketing plans for 2014 – 2015 and to negotiate discounted rates to offer our customers. I was pleased to meet Thai Airways Head office team, the producers of Muay Thai live, owners of Fairtex Pattaya and especially the valuable team from tourism authority of Thailand based in Bangkok. I’m pleased to say that I have become a trusted travel agent within the Muay Thai community by supporting Thailand’s national sport and bringing my customers from around the world to learn Muay Thai
as a safe and enjoyable sport which is cherished across Thailand.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my friends and partners in Thailand in making my trip a true suc-cess and a special thanks to Chris Lee Tourism Authority of Thailand Trade Marketing Director and Khun Kong Tourism Authority Director of UK and Ireland for the opportunity to be a part of the UK team.

AcknowledgmentsI would like to express my gratitude to: Dr. Sumet, Khun Lalit, Khun Onanan and Khun Siripan from the Chaipattana Foundation. To all of the teachers in both schools for the warmth they extended to me during my three-month stay. Khun Nattapong and Khun Tanyamon for taking me, on the evening I arrived, to see the candle floats from different temples that were placed on the ground of the District Office – the occasion was so beautiful. I thank them also for inviting me to accompany them whenever they visited the market after they had completed their day’s work. Khun Supranee for encouraging me to be a pillion passenger on her trip to the market, 8 kms. away, every Saturday morning. I was afraid at first that if I did not sit properly I would make her fall! It took many Saturdays of persuasion before I agreed to her request, and I am glad I did. We left at 6.00 and were back by
8.30 a.m. in time to teach in the village. Khun Pasakorn for taking me to see the oil palm plantation on the Sunday evening before I left. The distance of 50 kms. return journey from the village. He had given me so much knowledge. Over 7,000 palm trees have already been planted in approx. 400 Rais. 500 more Rais to go. When the palm fruits are green when raw they will change to orange when they are ripen. Also when the colour is black when they are raw then they will change to off red when they are ripen. Khun Isma-an and Khun Anchalee for
taking turns to open the office for me to spend an hour or so checking the news and send e-mails to my family every Saturday and Sunday after 4 p.m. for an hour. It was much appreciated. Khun Wanchai for picking me up on the mornings that I taught at KCP. Thanks also to Khun Sutham and Khun Sampan for helping Khun Wanchai to pick me up when Khun Wanchai had to drive the students to attend the compe-titions with other schools. Khun Siripinya, Deputy Director of KCP for driving me back to the village when Khun Wanchai was not available. Khun Siripinya also had to return to catch up with her work because
she is, at present, the only Deputy there. There were normally two deputy directors. As I reflect on my recent commitment to the Chaipattana Foundation this year, I am flattered by the indication which was conveyed to me by both teachers and children that they would like me to return to Kuraburi again. ….We must Wait and see!….Till next time! Now that I am back in Wales, UK, I carry on helping Thai people with language difficulties by giving my service free of charge and have been very busy since my return.

a private crematorium, only a few members of the family mourned his passing away. He sought all his life to give people a share in their own government. It was a sad conclusion to him who may be called “real democrat” what he received in the end of his life.

Prajadhipok decided to abdicate, because he was a true democrat more than anyone else at that time in the Thai history. He was so much hurt when “democracy” had been used in the wrong way. Anyone who would admire someone who is a real Thai democrat would agree that H.M. King Prajadhipok should be called “the Father of Thai Democracy”.
