The Thai people created the kingdom of Sukhothai-Srisachanalai which was ruled by Por Khun Sri Now Numtham, after his death this region was controlled by Khmer Sabad Khlo Lumpong. According to an inscription on stone 2 Por Khun Bang Klang How and Por Khun Pha Muang combined forces with the people to attack and seize the Khmer realm, in this way they created Sukhothai-Sisachanalai as a Thai nation once again.
hen this occurred Por Khun Bang Klang How created the free state of
Suwanabhum as part of the Thai nation. He also created himself the first King in the name of “Por Khun Sri-intratitya”. From this point on Thailand began to have a history so that Sukhothai became autonomous in about 1257 A.D. Historians believe that the people of Sukhothai and others prefered to give the title of Phra Ruang to every king who ruled in the Sukhothai capital, but no king was ever called “Phra-Ruang” during the Sukhothai period. It may be because of the image or sacred remem-brance of “Phra Ruang - Phra Lur” at Wat Sri-Ratanamahathatu, Sri-sachanalai, Sukhothai province, that the ancients be-
lieved this is the original place and start of the Phra-Ruang dynasty.
Phra-Ruang dynasty was originally formed of the Kings or a group of people who had powers of administration in Sukhothai the first capital based on Sukhothai-Srisachanalai which was the centre of administration, as well as the place for
the Royal family. The word “Phra-Ruang” is the title given to people who were ad-ministrators or the Kings who ruled the Sukhothai region. “Ruang” itself means bright or shiny, and this word is a syn-onym of Lan-Chang in the local language which is “Hung”. “Ruang” is also the name of the Buddha image called “Phra Ruang Rojanarit Sri-intratitya Dhammophas Mahavajirawuth Pujaniyabopit” this is to emphasize the meaning of this word as brightness and prosperity the word “Phra-Ruang” was first used when Por Khun Bang Klang How crowned himself as the “Por Khun Sri-intratitya” and established the Phra-Ruang dynasty, he did not use his own family name for the dynasty. Historians believe that this dynasty may have been related to Phraya Kosathibodi (Pan) and may be related to King Rama I (Chakri dynasty).
However, historians have traced the name of the Kings who ruled in the Sukhothai period, here they are:1. Por Khun Sri-intalatitya2. Por Khun Ban Muang3. Por Khun Ram Khomhang4. Phraya Ler Thai
5. Phraya Ngau Num Thom6. Phra Maha Dhamma Raja I (Li-thai)7. Phra Maha Dhamma Raja II8. Phra Maha Dhamma Raja III (Sai Luer Thai)9. Phra Maha Dhamma Raja IIII (Borom-Pan) The Phra-Ruang dynasty of Kings in the Sukhothai period are related to other dy-nasties, this can provide advantages and disadvantages. Apart from this, the ways to rule and develop the country of the Kings of Phra-Ruang dynasty is what we should know and learn about from them. I will present this next time.

Geoff Tirrellthe new General Manager of International Beverage (InterBev)
InterBev appoints UK General Manager,Geoff Tirrell
Interview with
The global arm of ThaiBev, owner of both Chang beer and the Mekhong brand, International Beverage Holdings, has appointed Geoff Tirrell as its Inter-Bev UK general manager with effect from 1 August 2010. Geoff currently works as a Trustee Thai-UK Trust and Event Co-ordinator for The Thai Festival at Bat-tersea Park 2010.
He was a Managing Director of Entbe Ltd from 1997 to 2009, which was an
exhibitor as well as sponsor of numerous Thai and UK events and charities. Geoff has been heavily involved in the Thai res-taurants and the UK’s wholesalers increas-ing awareness of Thailand. He imported Thai products, successfully securing listings in four of the top five UK supermarkets. Today Amthaipaper would like to offer the reader an exclusive interview with him.
amthai: By way of introduction, could you tell us about your educational and work background?I was born in Kensington, West London and went to School at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, where I studied Biology, Geography and Economics A-levels. At Brighton University I studied a BSC Hons in Environmental science, so running a green business has always been important to me. In the past we used LPG vans for restaurant deliveries in London and ran several green initiatives to help lower our carbon footprint and limit our impact on the environment.
After graduating from University I spent some time working for Bottoms Up off license group, and then in 1997 joined the family business importing Thai beer. As a family, we secured listings in numerous large supermarkets such as Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, also placing advertisements in main stream magazines such as GQ, Maxim, Delicious magazine and FHM raising the profile of Thai prod-ucts in the UK.
I n 2007 we celebrated 30 years of suc-
cessful busi-ness by run-ning various campaigns that included Bus, London
Underground and taxi adver-
After meeting with the president of Thai Beverage PLC., Khun Thapana Sirivad-hanabhakdi and his team both here in the UK and Thailand, I am delighted to have accepted the role of General Manager for
Chang UK.
My role will see me overseeing the sales and marketing of Chang Beer and Mek-hong in the UK.
amthai: What lies ahead for Chang and Interbev in the coming year?Chang is a truly exceptional Thai beer, created to compliment the unique culture, heritage and cuisine of Thailand. Within only four years of launch, Chang beer became the number one selling Thai beer brand in Thailand. Now Chang premium Thai beer is recognised for its unique quality all over the world. It is a very exciting prospect to be working with a truly international Thai brand with a strong global reputation.
Mekhong was the first branded spirit to be produced in Thailand and has been a leader in its domestic market for ap-proaching 70 years. Mekhong has recently undergone a packaging redesign. Using the Mekhong River as the source of inspiration, it has taken traditional Thai boating iconography and incorporated it into the new pack design in a subtle and contemporary style. Both Mekhong and Chang are the perfect accompaniments to Thai and Asian Foods.
amthai: What are the next activities and promotions from Chang that we should be looking forward to over the next year?Watch this space! We have numerous initiatives, activities and announcements planned for the coming twelve months.
amthai: Greeting to our Thai commu-nity. I am looking forward to again working closely with the Thai community and building on the strong family and com-pany values of International Beverage PLC. I will also enjoy helping to support the Thai community and increasing the UK consumer awareness of two of Thailand’s most famous products Chang beer and Mekhong, both have a heritage that all Thai and Asian people can be proud of.
Amthaipaper would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Khun Geoff Tirrell for his new role, and wish him much success in the years to come.

I am also a Trustee of the Thai UK Trust, registered UK charity 1114647, we have raised close to £100,000.00 to date for good causes in the UK and in Thailand.
For the last six months I have been help-ing to organise the 2010 Thai Festival at Battersea Park with my mother, Pantipa Tirrell, and sister, Donna Tirrell, who are also trustees for the Thai UK Trust char-
ity. We are hoping to raise even more money from this annual community event for good causes, such as the Chaipattana Foundation.
At the beginning of this year I managed to take some time off and spent time travelling around Thailand and South East Asia. It was good to be in Thailand on holiday rather than business and spend some quality time with my relatives.

East meets West –Fruit, vegetable, and soap carving
Often, differences of culture, religion, eth-nicity, and gender keep people apart, but sometimes such differences can also bring people together, united in a shared inter-est; for example, music, the Arts, or travel. In Part 1 of this article we describe how the traditional Thai/Siamese skill of fruit, vegetable, and soap carving originated. We also note a creative collaboration in London, England, between an expert female Thai carver and a Western male (farang) who are developing their mutual interest in fine decorative carving.
In Part 2 (next issue) of this article (to be published at a later date) we will describe the selection of fruits, vegetables, and soap suitable for carving, and prepara-tion and treatment.
The history of Thai/Siamese carvingThailand, the Land of Smiles, is famed the world over for the beauty and delicacy of its art and culture, which once experi-enced, make an unforgettable impression upon visitors. One skill that so delights them is the exquisite artistry of carved fruits and vegetables, an integral part of the presentation of Thai food.
Fruit and vegetable carving is a venerable and ancient Thai/Siamese tradition, and is considered one of the ten traditional Thai crafts. This ancient art is used in making food offerings to kings, monks, ordinations, weddings, royal funerals, and entertaining guests.
This craft was developed in Thailand (Siam) in the palaces of the kings since the Sukhothai Period over 700 years ago. At that time, it featured in the traditional celebration of the Floating Lantern Festi-val of Loi Krathong, at the full moon of the twelfth lunar month. The legendary originator of the festival, Lady Thao Sichu Lalak, decorated her floating lantern with a profusion of flowers, birds, swans, rab-bits and many other animals carved from fruits and vegetables.
During the First Reign of the Bangkok Period, His Majesty King Rama I “the Great” held a fruit and vegetable carving competition at the Loi Krathong festival. Squashes were elaborately carved to serve as bowls for presenting sweet young rice to the monks, and the trays on which the bowls were placed were splendidly adorned with flowers of many sorts carved from papayas coloured with natural dyes.
Fruits and vegetable carving was thus ‘amthai

the palace which in effect became the university for Thai ladies. Young ladies of good family would be sent to the ladies of the palace to be trained in the arts and skills of the royal ladies, and so carving developed as a traditional skill performed by ladies.
The purpose of fruit and vegetable carv-ing now is to make food more attractive, more appetizing, and also easier to eat. The accomplished homemaker welcomes her guests with fruit carefully prepared, seeded, and perhaps cut into bite-size slices depending on the type. Vegetables are first delicately carved, then often cooked, and finally arranged attractively to decorate the dish. Of course, guests are greatly pleased to be honoured with such a gracious welcome, displaying as it does the good feelings and willing hospitality of the maker.
Such decorative carving has now achieved widespread appeal in both Eastern and Western countries, and is practised by both females and males.
Decorating fresh, well-formed, and colour-ful fruits and vegetables through artistic carving is not particularly difficult, but it does require concentration, and like any skill, a great deal of practice is required to achieve a high level of expertise.
Kannika from Thailand and Malcolm from EnglandKannika started carving when at secondary school in Bangkok, and subsequently as part of her College Diploma in Hotel Busi-ness, and then in her University Bachelor of Arts degree in Hotel Management and Hospitality. For the next 5 years Kannika worked at the 5 star Bangkok Marriott Hotel where her work included selec-tion to be a fruit and vegetable carving demonstrator. She wanted to take her carving skills (and garland-making) to a higher level, and so in her spare time she studied with an expert Thai carving teacher. Kannika then moved to the 7 star Empire Hotel in Brunei for 4 years where she continued as a carving demonstrator, producing exotic carvings for many Brunei royal family events. This was followed by 1 year in Malaysia’s top island hotel resort of Pangkor Laut, where again she was the principal carving demonstrator. Kan-nika’s elegant, detailed, and exotic carvings (with practical demonstrations) delighted many famous persons, such as the King of Sweden, and Hollywood stars such as Keira Knightly. Kannika is now in London where she is applying her expertise to fine and delicate soap carvings. Every Sunday she goes to the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon, where she meets with English-man, Malcolm, and together they develop their soap carving skill which requires a
the necessary delicacy and detail.
Malcolm worked as an electronics engineerin the aviation industry (including workingon the electronics development of Con-corde). In his spare time, he had a greatinterest in designing and making jewelleryIn addition to his lifelong interest in Natureand the environment, Malcolm has alwaysbeen particularly drawn to Thai cultureits history, language, and traditions. Hisfascination with carving started when headmired the artistry of Thai fruit carvingbeing demonstrated at a hotel in Thailandin 1981. Some years later, Malcolm begangoing to the Buddhapadipa Temple inWimbledon where various traditional Thaskills and activities were (and still are) be-ing taught. Malcolm took this opportunityto try his hand at Thai carving, and tochallenge himself, as a Western farang, todevelop his carving skill to the point wherehe could create beautiful results like Thacarvers can do with fruits and vegetablesin Thailand. He has successfully achievedthat, and is now further developing hisskill with soap carving.
If you would like to see demonstrationsof soap, fruit, and vegetable carving byKannika and Malcolm, and others, pleasefeel free to visit the Buddhapadipa Templein Calonne Road in Wimbledon, LondonSW19 on a Sunday afternoon.
