AMS tracker hardware status(mechanics and cabling)
With the help of S.Lucidi (Perugia) for paper work (QA)
* Retirement approaching
Université de Genève
University of Geneva staff involved:
Tracker de-integration• Was the opportunity for verifications and to study non-
conformance issues.• In particular, the interferences with the LTOF already
described by Corrado Gargiulo at April 2008 TIM
Tracker de-integration• Was the opportunity to study non-conformance issues
Incompatibilities between locations of LTOF patch panel and pigtails of the tracker lower cooling pipes.
Confabulations took place under the detector …
… black mass ?
… finally a council of wise men took the decision …
… to modify the lower cooling loops by replacing the last pigtails by a simple S.
Other verifications and tests
• mountability of special supporting brackets for connectors of cooling pipes.
• accessibility of tracker feet for shear pins position transfer
• covers for light tightness of tracker feet
Dismantling
• On-line operations went smoothly and were faster than expected thanks to the rotation of the detector and:– Measurements of feet movement for cold integration
were canceled since the inner tracker integration with cold tank is no longer an option.
– Outer planes and inner cooling loops were dismantled from bottom (this condition will no longer be possible for final integration)
– Extraction of the inner tracker made in vertical position.
• Components of the tracker are presently in the AMS clean room for off-line operations

Main off-line operations(in clean room and in air lock)
Repairs and evtl modifications will be recorded in the tracker ADPs (Stefano Lucidi)
• Evaporators (cooling loops) (air lock, B.Verlaat, 2nd half of August)- Change pipes connectors (cut and weld)- Modify pigtails of lower loops (cut and weld)- High pressure and leak tests- Cleaning
- Inner Tracker (clean room)
- Verification of cables and connectors fixations- Install upper inner cooling loop (after modification)
- Install evaporators supporting brackets on conical flange
Main off-line operations(continuation)
- Outer planes (clean room)
- (Test of a ladder and/or cable on plane 5)- Helicoil check/repair- Install outer cooling loops (after modification)
- Final fixation of loops to flat St steel plates- Final fixations (Chotherm and cable connector pins)
- TAS work ?- Components (UniGe)
- Inserts to fix Alu plates to folded brackets- Fabricate missing cable brackets for Vacuum Tank- Surface treatment of Alu components- Fabricate final shear pins for tracker feet- Fabricate M10 spl nuts- drill plates to secure M10 nuts- etc…
Preparation of final integration
• Update of integration procedures (ATS, Stefano Lucidi) taking into account what we have learned in pre-integration and the limitations imposed by the real vacuum case:
- Limitation of RAS rotation
- Field mapping / Need for special protection ?
- Cryogenic services to VC
Lessons from pre-integration
• Mechanical integration of the tracker was successful
• One will have to take care of many small details by-passed for pre-integration
• Cabling appeared to be longer and more difficult than expected
