Dear Colleague,

The role that Amphibious Operations plays is at a crossroads. The shift of geopolitical andmilitary emphasis from the Middle East to Asia-Pacific and the search to bridge currentcapability gaps have pushed our armed services to re-evaluate their priorities. The Ship-to-Shore Connector (SSC) and Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) have risen to overcome thesegaps, but the biggest obstacles may still be unanswered. Now is the time to find out.

In light of this ambiguity, IDGA's Amphibious Operations Summit is the opportunediscussion space for you to join. Policy makers will begin by providing the dialogue thatexplores their grand strategy, program managers will layer on how they will contribute tothat strategy’s success, and you have the chance to show how to bring it to light.

This conversation will address these most pressing of issues facing the Navy and MarineCorps. It is a space for you to interact with solution providers within the military, individualagencies, research labs, manufacturing and academic community.

Reserve your place amongst the leaders of future amphibious development by calling now on1.800.882.8684 or visiting www.AmphibiousOperationsEvent.com!

Access into Contentious Zones

Challenges with Anti-Access and Area Denial

9:00 am

This focus session will cover the defenses against amphibious assaults. Themajor issues that prevent operational success during amphibious operationsare opposing anti-access and area denial capabilities. These capabilities targetthe services’ ability to enter a contested area and their capabilities withinthose hostile areas. We will discuss how the Marine Air-Ground Task Force(MAGTF) will operate during conflicts involving counter A2/AD strategies.

What will be covered:• Challenges for the MAGTF during a counter-A2/AD joint fight• Problems with counter A2/AD• The nature and characteristics of the current procedures concerning A2/AD

How you will benefit:• Hear more about current challenges with the amphibious battlespace• Learn what the MAGTF and amphibious forces are doing to solve these

challenges• Understand the technologies that continue to threaten mission success

Session Leader:Colonel Vincent Alcazar, USAF

Amphibious Operations Defenses

Defensive and Offensive Mine Warfare

10:30 am

Mines are an effective and cost efficient method of deterring maneuverability.Their type and complexity vary dramatically, creating a need for newtechnology and tactics. This symposium session will present the mine threatfrom an operational perspective including an account of how mines havetraditionally impacted naval mobility and the solutions being developed forthe present and future threat.

What will be covered:• Historical perspective on the mine threat and it’s hindrance to amphibious

operations• The current mine threat and countermeasures• Development and capabilities to combat the future mine threat

How you will benefit• Discover the priorities of OPNAV N852• Hear about potential program acquisitions • Engage in a thorough discussion about defensive effectiveness

Session Leader:Captain Frank Linkous, USN, Branch Head, Mine Warfare OPNAV N852

South East Asia Security

China's Amphibious Access Denial and Emerging Expeditionary Capabilities

1:30 pm – 2:15 pm

This focus session will examine how China will seek to better defend itsregional and international interests with new expeditionary forces that couldbe realized by the early 2020s. In 2012, China could launch its fourth LPDout of a reported total of six, to which it may add up to six LHDs. China isalso working on a C-17 class airlifter and new medium weight mechanizedforces. A concluding scenario will posit a future Chinese "punitive" raid onthe Philippine island of Palawan.

What will be covered:• The Chinese leadership's quest for maritime power and PLA's anti-access

threat to US amphibious operations

• PLA’s growing formal amphibious capabilities, informal amphibious supportand airmobile army forces

• Scenario 2022: Punishing the Philippines with a combined air-amphibiousassault against Puerto Princessa

How you will benefit• Develop a greater understanding of other countries’ capabilities • Learn more about the South East security status• Improve your conception of the challenges the amphibious forces face

Session LeaderRick Fisher, Senior Research Fellow, International Assessment andStrategy Center

The role of our amphibious forces and their operational success undoubtedly hinges on the environments in which they mustfunction. Anti-Access, Defensive Mine Warfare, and Ballistic Missiles are capabilities that contribute to the growing defenseagainst amphibious assaults. As different countries continue to develop these capabilities, it further threatens to preclude missionsuccess for the amphibious forces. What the amphibious operatives must focus on now is how to overcome such defenses.

The sessions of this Focus Day will tackle these issues by first exploring these defensive technologies and then examining thepotential adversaries that may field them in the amphibious battlespace. The in-depth presentations will add insight into theissues that high-level policy makers must address in the coming future.
