We can have fun too!Stop taking it too serious...01. Many golfers take their playing too serious...I’m not saying practice and focus, I mean their conduct out on the course. Swearing, breaking clubs, being rude to the players who are in their group, etc. is not the way to enjoy the game of golf. Many of out there do not have the time nor the skill to play on the PGA TOUR and thus are called “Amateurs”. In light of this, and since we are making a living playing golf...why not enjoy it!

02. The ability to wake up each day knowing that all you have to do is put on your shorts, shirt and shoes and get out to the course and play is a blessing.

The serene views, the quietness of the fairway and the challenge of the greens is enough to think that you have died and gone to heaven! To some you might have thought you have or should have when you see what they charge you for a course membership and dues each month. Well, other than that, the game is what makes you smile. The challenge is what allows you to brag. And the relaxation and drive to do better, is what brings you back.

03. Take that frown and turn it upside down and smile. Enjoy the game of golf instead of yelling and kicking up dirt. If you screw up a shot, mark it down and

put it on your list of things you need to practice. If it’s a shot you need to make but don’t know how to do it, get instruction or practice it until you can master it.

04. The game of golf originated many years ago initially for “gentlemen” and thus it was intended to be played like gentlmen; with respect, trust, and gentlemanly conduct.

05. We all like to challenge and we want to be the best at what we do...however, let’s be the one who can shrug it off our shoulder, practice and the next round get the “best” of the course, not your clubs or

the sand in the pit.

06. Bring the “love” back into the game and see how lucky you are to be out on beautifully manicured golf courses each week...literally chasing a white ball to put in a hole....yes, that’s the game of golf.

07. A lot of our mistakes can be fixed through practice. Sometimes its not our fault, we just don’t have it like the pros.

Don’t mess up our game! Be copetitive but internal when it comes to frustration. Isn’t it wonderful that we have the chance to play this game? We go from resort

to resort, challenging ourselves to play courses designed to beat us. we spend endless hours hitting, chipping and putting and every time we play, we learn something new...ah, this is what I call golf.

Let’s all be friends, crack a smile often and just like the game was originated to be...be a gentleman while you’re at it!

Tom LehmanWe need to make golf fun & a way of lifeWe had a chance to chat with Tom Lehman as he played during the week at one of the Champions Tour Championships held in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dave asked him some questions about the development of young amateurs and the need to make golf fun and a way of life. He smiled as we asked him these questions...you will like what he says. (Tom Lehman from pg. 21) .

Dave: Tom, what do you think about the sudden surge of 21 year olds on the PGA Tour?

Tom: Well, this is what happens when you get someone like Tiger Woods who showed the world that working out and physical well-being is just as important as mental.

Dave: Do you think so many young players, ones that really have no real notoriety or identification with the fan, is that the PGA TOUR needs?

Tom: Oh hell yes. They are the lifeblood of the TOUR. You have to keep the influx of players at a high quality do that they are ready to replace the older models like myself who luckily have our Tour to play in. The Bubba Watson’s, Rory McIlroy’s, and dustin Johnson’s are what make it exciting each week. They are the ones who are challenging our favorites like Tiger, Phil Michelson and Steve Stricker.

Dave: What about the game in general. Do you think the game is still fun?

Tom: Yes, but we tend to get caught up in the will to win and the pressure sometimes drives us to the point we stop enjoying the game. What you have to do is refcous and let the game teach you what you have to work on. This perspective allows you to respect the game and take from it life’s lessons.

Dave: Wow that was nice to hear, so is it we need to see what golf does to us in the way we lead our lives? If so, how do you think we can implement that?

Tom: First, you need to see how golf helps you use your brain. The game is best played when you can assess your obsatcles. From there, you find ways to get past them. Your practice and skill allow you to choose the ones you can achieve, and then your focus and determination give you the strength to pull them off. These things are elements of what we go through every day, whether it be in the office, running your business or even the Manager at a McDonalds. You always have to see and react to the playing field. This is why organizations like the “First Tee” are so valuable to kids and people who have been disadvantaged, because they learn a lot of these things and use them to get better grades, make better decisions, work out relationships, and analyze problems in the classroom as well as the home.

Dave: So, if we can show people that golf is really a game about life, we can get more people out on the courses and help drive this industry to new levels.

Tom: Yes, Dave you are right. If you see a lot of the advertising is focused on just that. Bring out the family, put a club in your hands, enjoy the resort, let golf be a part of your life and it will lead you to success. I believe that is true and that’s why I love the game and I will always be an ambassador to it until I die.

01. Keep Your Hands Low Limiting the height of the followthrough will effectively reduce the height of your shots. The lower the hands, the lower the ballflight.

02. Give Your Spine The Forearm Make sure you’re on-plane at the top of the swing to guarantee solid ballstriking and increased accuracy.

03. Use Your Body For Power Every good golfer knows that power comes from the body, not the arms. To learn to power the club with your body instead of your arms and hands, put the club behind the ball at address, with your body in a dead-stop position. Without taking a backswing, try to drag the ball into the air. If you’re a player who uses his or her hands to control the club, you’ll probably struggle at first.

04. Hinge For Power Amateurs have problems hitting crisp iron shots due to two fatal flaws. First, the takeaway tends to be too low to the ground, which delays the proper hinging of the wrists until too late in the backswing. Second, in a misguided effort to create power, the arms tend to swing too far in the backswing. This causes a breakdown in posture and usually leads to a reverse pivot. These flaws cause mis-hits and a lack of distance and control.

05. Give Your Slice The Elbow Some players like John Daly swing with their elbow flying out, while others like Sergio Garcia keep it in, proving that it’s possible to hit great shots with either method. However, my biomechanical studies indica-te that the flying right elbow position favors a fade ballflight while a tucked right elbow promotes a draw. If you struggle with slicing or have always wanted to develop a power-rich draw, then the right elbow may hold the answer.

06. Solid Plane = No Slice An open face at the point of contact can cause a slice. So, too, can a faulty swing path, even if your clubface is square to the target at impact. Slicers’ swing paths tend to come too much outside in (hookers, vice versa).

07. Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down Hookers need to stop the clubface from closing too soon. To do this, adopt a thumbs-down approach to impact.

08. No Flips “Flippiness” (the dreaded early release) occurs if your body gets too far in front of the golf ball. When this happens, your club will drastically lag, usually with an open face. Instinctually, your hands will work to close the face at impact. See last two on page 40.

Carved out of the rugged coast, the Cha-llenge at Manele sprawls across ancient lava fields, with 180-degree ocean pano-ramas from every hole. A theater of color unfolds: red cliffs plunging down to blue sea, green fairways engulfing white sand-traps, and blossoms from fissures in the black lava rock. This was the palette of designer Jack Nicklaus, who shaped the 7,039–yard, par 72 championship course, carefully protecting and preserving the archaeological ruins within its borders.

Teeing off from the cliffs at Hulopoe Bay with the Pacific surging below, you face

perhaps the world’s most unforgiving water hazard. The twelfth hole is nothing short of a leap of faith, with 200 yards of churning waves to cross. Other holes de-mand shots over yawning ravines. Fortu-nately, the five-tee concept - with courses of shorter yardage mapped in red, white, blue, gold and “Nicklaus” - allows golfers of all levels to emerge unscathed.

Features of Course

The course features 3 holes constructed on the cliffs of Hulopoe Bay which use the

Pacific Ocean as a dramatic water hazard. The five-tee concept challenges even the best golfers with precise tee shots over natural gorges and ravines, while the ave-rage golfer will enjoy the beautiful vistas without suffering limitations on distance and accuracy. The Par 3, Number 12 “signa-ture hole” plays from a cliff 150 feet above the crashing surf, requiring a demanding 200-yard tee shot across the ocean.

Golfer’s ChallengeIsland of Lana’i Golf

by Rodney Green Director of Golf, Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club According to the National Golf Foundation women golfers are the fastest growing segment of new gol-fers. There are more than 6 million female golfers in the United States. Over the last few years 30 percent of my individual lessons have been women, and in some of the group clinics that I do the class consist of easily 80 percent women. Why is there such a growth? There are a variety of reasons:

Golf for Business Numerous women in corporate America are playing for business reasons first and foremost. When you think of the time spent playing a round of golf it’s easy to see the advantages of having 4 to 5 hours of face time with a client. Employers also view potential candidates both male and female based on certain credentials and degrees. Playing golf may be the edge that works in your favor. To put it plain and simple, if you’re not out there on the course you could be missing out. I’m not saying that you have to be a professional. Get a basic unders-tanding of the fundamentals of the golf swing. Learn the rules and etiquette of the game, and get out there and play. You will be surprised to find out that the majority of the golfers out there (especially men) are not as far advanced as you may think.

Golf for Socializing Another reason some women have taken up the game is to spend time with their husbands or boyfriends. And it gives them an opportunity to do something fun as a couple. I have even had single women tell me it’s a nice place to meet “cute guys” as well. If you belong to a club it serves as a great opportunity to socialize and network with other female friends or spend quality time with the kids.

Golf for Fitness Exercise is another great reason women have taken up the sport. It takes a great deal of strength, flexibility and stamina to play good golf. Being fit is a must. Also getting outside and enjoying the scenery is a known attraction to golfers of every gender.

09. Chipping Although it’s tempting to hit chips indoors, all it takes is one broken lamp to realize that golf is an outdoor activity. Nevertheless, you can improve your chipping technique within the friendly confines of your own living room with the help of a wooden dowel or broken golf shaft.Take the dowel and place it through the hole on the top of the grip on a pitching wedge. Push the dowel roughly eight to 12 inches down the butt end of the shaft (a little Vaseline may help the dowel slide easier through the clubshaft). The best advice is to establish an athletic, ready-to-move setup. Create this posture by bending forward from the hip sockets and back from the knees. When your back leg is flexed correctly, it creates room for your arms to swing and aligns the joints, one on top of the other. You should be able to draw a
