We create better places for people to live, work and travel.

Page 3: Amey's Strategy for Sustainability

We are proud to be the people behind the services you use every day – from roads, railways and schools to waste disposal, airports or the energy and water you use in your home.

We are not a household name, but our 21,000 people keep daily life functioning in almost every neighbourhood across the UK.

For us, being a sustainable business means being a thriving business. The work we do has a huge impact on the communities we serve, so it’s essential that we act sustainably in everything we do.

Taking this approach makes sure we can anticipate and manage the challenges, then capture the opportunities that face our customers both today and in the future.

To help achieve this we have developed six corporate objectives which run through everything we do.

These objectives form our corporate framework and, through committing to deliver them, we believe we will have the most positive impact to society, both now and in future years to come.

This document outlines those objectives, our aims and our commitments to realise our plans for sustainable growth to 2018.

Amey is one of the largest and most diverse companies working for the public and regulated sectors in the UK, with the ultimate aim of creating better places to live, work and travel.

The journey continues

Mel Ewell Chief Executive

Our objectives

Achieving sustainable growth

We have set ourselves a series of ambitious growth

plans with the aim of becoming a £3bn turnover

business by 2018.

Investing in people and skills for the future

We are a people business and everything we do is done by our employees. We are fully committed to valuing diversity and investing in people to fulfil their potential.

Keeping people safe

Nobody comes to work to get hurt. Our job is to keep

all employees, the public, our suppliers, our customers

and our partners safe every day.

Providing value to our customers

We put the public and our customers’ changing needs at the heart of everything we do.

Protecting and enhancing the environment

The planet’s resources are not infinite; we need to safeguard them both today and for future generations.

Supporting communities

Our ultimate aim is to create sustainable communities. We seek to improve the communities that we serve in order

to create positive and sustained change.

Amey is committed to operating a sustainable business and to delivering services which meet and go beyond the sustainability objectives of our customers. Our approach is underpinned by our six corporate objectives. We believe that through committing to deliver these objectives, Amey can have the most positive impact to society – both now and in future years to come.

Achieving sustainable growthAmey has continued to thrive and grow throughout the economic downturn, and is now one of the most diverse support service providers in the UK public and regulated sectors, with an industry leading bid win rate.

As a business we have ambitious growth plans; we look to anticipate and respond to the changing demands of our markets, offer long-term value to our customers, and achieve sustainable shareholder returns. Our parent company, Ferrovial, provides us with financial stability as well as long term security to ensure we can continue to invest in the things that matter to us and to all our stakeholders.

How do we deliver this?• We manage our risks and material impacts

• We ensure effective governance for sustainability

• We operate with ethical integrity

• We undertake stakeholder engagement to both understand our impacts and work in partnership for continual improvement

Page 12: Amey's Strategy for Sustainability

Managing our Risks and Material Impacts Materiality sits at the heart of all our sustainability action; we aim to focus on our most significant impacts and those which we have control or influence over to lever change. All sustainability risks are identified, weighted and reviewed by our Risk Management Committee - a sub-committee of the Amey Executive Committee. These risks are monitored and managed at a corporate and divisional level.

Ensuring Effective Governance We recognise that running a sustainable organisation is not a simple undertaking, but it’s non-negotiable for ensuring long-term benefits to all our stakeholders. To reflect the importance, sustainability’s broad scope, and the need for leadership, our Executive Committee takes top level responsibility for the agenda.

Our Executive Committee is supported by core functions taking on leadership roles against each objective and spearheading various work groups – such as our Inclusion Steering Group and our Green Travel and Transport Working Group – which ensure consistent and pan Amey approaches to our material impacts.

Clear Tax Strategy:

Amey is committed to an open and transparent relationship with HM Revenue and Customs, which underpins our status as a ‘low risk’ taxpayer. We are financially robust and operate in accordance with the requirements of Procurement Policy Note 06/13. We do not and will not engage in artificial tax planning where the outcome is intended to give a tax result out of line with the commercial substance.

Operating with Ethical IntegrityWe believe in conducting business to the highest ethical standards, and therefore maintaining public confidence in the integrity and corporate legitimacy of our operations. Amey aims to achieve this by communicating openly and honestly, supporting communities, developing learning opportunities, providing a safe working environment and controlling our environmental impacts.

In 2014 we reviewed, published and communicated our new Code of Ethics. This was sent to every employee and adherence to it is a requirement for all employees and new starters.

Prompt Payment:

Amey is a signatory to the Prompt Payment Code, an initiative from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills administered by the Institute of Credit Management. This commits us to paying suppliers within original terms agreed at the outset of a contract and providing clear and accessible guidance on payment procedures. We also encourage our lead suppliers to follow suit.

This code will particularly benefit the smaller companies we work with due to their vulnerability to late payment. Amey have also signed up to the Government’s Rail Supply Group, which aims to get more small and medium-sized firms involved in the latest five-year delivery programme.

Our award winning graduate and apprenticeship programmes offer the chance to gain professional

qualifications, as well as life skills.

Community Hub Bus

The Community Hub bus has been used by community assembly stewards on a number of projects. It is used both pre-commencement and during works as an information and feed-back drop in centre for members of the public who may be inconvenienced or simply wish to find out more about what we and our clients do. It can also be an incident-support hub, especially when we are completing disruptive work in highly populated areas, to ensure customers are kept informed throughout. On board, it has plenty of seating, as well as full internet access and displays of project specific information.

Our Social Network

Amey has introduced innovative tools to support our sustainability activity. Yammer is a ‘social network for businesses’ used by over 5,000 employees to share ideas and promote best practice online.

We also use Yammer to promote innovation programmes. We recently challenged employees to come up with ideas that support reduced energy consumption. Prizes of up to £6,500 were available as well as investment into the winning ideas.

Undertaking Stakeholder EngagementWithout engaging and working with all of our stakeholders we can’t make or lever the change we strive to achieve. We aim to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders including

customers, suppliers, partners, employees and end users so that we fully understand their needs and can build these into our approach to managing sustainability.

Providing value to our customersEconomic prosperity, improved health, supporting employment and skills, green energy and reduced waste are just some of the sustainability challenges facing our customers today.

How do we deliver this?

• We develop and provide sustainable asset management to our customers

• We deliver smart solutions

• We deliver consistent excellence in service delivery

Road Safety

Central Bedfordshire Council has seen a 33% fall in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road collisions – since outsourcing its road safety education, training and publicity to Amey. This has also reduced their education and engagement costs by 10%. The reduction in collision rates has been seen across every ‘most at-risk group’ including motorcyclists, young drivers, car passengers and children.

Managing Assets SustainablyFor us, asset management is about maximising value from all assets in a structured and predictable way throughout their life cycle. We seek to fully understand and optimise assets by introducing lifecycle thinking in every service.

This will allow our employees and customers at every level to understand the balance between cost, risk and performance – be that environmental, social or economic.

Developing Smart SolutionsIt is an exciting and innovative time for IT. We recognise that there is huge potential to address some of society’s sustainability challenges via IT, and that’s why we’re aiming to be IT leaders.

Our focus is based on; introducing sensor technology to assets, enhancing mobile communication and technology, maximising the value of geo-location technology, and communicating with customers and end-users through technology.

Birmingham Smart Parking

Amey worked in partnership with Birmingham City Council to run a ‘smart parking’ trial to reduce city centre congestion. It has been found that up to 30% of city drivers are seeking a space, and spending up to 15 minutes to park.

The smart parking approach aimed to address this, resulting in lower congestion, less wasted fuel, and potential added value to businesses and retailers. Around 200 small sensors were embedded into roads, enabling drivers to instantly see available parking spaces in the city via a smartphone app and website.

Gain Share for Energy Reduction

Working in partnership with British Gas, Amey took on board the Home Office’s energy challenge, and developed the first ever energy management Gain Share contract.

Amey invested in new low-energy technologies at no cost to the government. Any financial savings made are shared. We have already reduced emissions by over 6,100 tonnes, shaving £1.1million off energy bills.

Benefits of our Standard Operating Model

Our Standard Operating Model is a means of replicating best practice and improving efficiency and quality in our services through setting a model of standard operation.

This has resulted in impressive improvement in the business, with an 18% increase in jobs completed right first time, and a 45% increase in the average number of jobs completed per gang. It has also led to improved workforce engagement and real time monitoring of HSEQ information.

360 Degree Review

Suppliers who are essential to our service delivery participate in our annual 360° supplier review process. We use this not only to review the supplier’s performance but also to understand their perception of Amey and encourage them to identify any potential issues with our own performance and how we can allow them to work better – the aim being to help both Amey and its suppliers to work more effectively together and continually improve our overall performance in delivering to our customers.

Providing Excellent Service DeliveryOur approach to optimisation of reactive and cyclical maintenance has been called the ‘Standard Operating Model’ because it draws best practice across contracts and eliminates inefficiencies by data-led operational visibility.

This provides data to share with communities, leading to a reduction in complaints, benchmarking of operational outputs by delivery mechanism, and an ability to target employment and training opportunities within the infrastructure services.

Implementing Sustainable ProcurementAmey recognises that every procurement decision contributes to achieving our six objectives – whether that is through the purchasing of goods (materials and products) or services.

We believe that sustainable procurement is about social and ethical purchasing, minimising environmental impact and delivering economically strong solutions – all fundamental to our business and sustainability strategy. We acknowledge resource scarcity, waste, pollution, climate change, discrimination, bribery and corruption as key challenges which only together with our supply chain we can fully understand and address.

Investing in people and skills for the futureWe are a people business and everything we do is done by our employees - our future success is determined by the quality and success of our people and their skills. Investing in our people so they can realise their potential is something we are absolutely committed to and a fundamental part of our business strategy.

How do we deliver this?• We create a positive culture and working environment

• We provide great learning and development opportunities

• We value and promote inclusion and diversity

Creating a Positive Working Environment We understand that the environment you work in has a huge impact on performance. We look to create a positive working culture, focusing on the development of ‘role model’ people managers and effective and flexible working practices. The impact of this is reflected in our 90% employee retention rate and 97.5% employee wellness score.

Our culture is underpinned by our Values – PACE (Progressive, Accountable, Collaborative and Effective) and we measure how well our employees are living these values each year through a series of behaviours that are built into our performance reviews.

Employee Champions

Our 160 employee champions act as internal advocates for Amey and play a vital role in helping to get key messages out to employees and feeding back local views into the business. Champions receive support to help colleagues in their local team to access information and systems; as well as co-ordinating local community activity.

Employee Survey

Amey runs an annual all-employee survey across the business. This aims to measure overall employee satisfaction as well as employee feedback on specific questions. Survey outcomes are discussed in workshops and actions are agreed for improvement.

Commitment x/x: Invest in technology to support the delivery of new, differentiated and sustainable solutions.

Inclusion Steering Group

Amey’s Inclusion Steering Group was established in 2011 to address equality and diversity in all areas of the business. Outputs of the group have informed the way we recruit, train and develop our employees and engage with our supply chain and wider external stakeholders. Amey was the first organisation in our sector to be awarded the Two Ticks symbol sponsored by Jobcentre Plus, showing our commitment regarding employment of disabled people.

Targeted Recruitment

Amey is a signatory of the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant; a voluntary pledge from businesses, public sector organisations and charities who want to demonstrate their support for the armed forces community. In demonstration of our commitment to support diversity and the armed forces, our rail electrification project has committed to ensuring that 25% of the workforce recruited are ex-service men or women.

Valuing DiversityWe believe a service is best provided when the differing needs of people and communities are recognised. It is vital that the members of our diverse workforce – including our suppliers – are enabled to contribute in their own way, within a framework of shared values and goals.

It is our policy to treat all employees and job applicants fairly and equally. That means treating everyone as individuals regardless of their age, gender, disabilities, marital status, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, responsibility for dependants, religion, belief, trade union activity, transsexual or sexual orientation.

“I didn’t really enjoy classroom-based learning and ended up in a job where there were limited prospects. I knew that even though I hadn’t completed college I wanted to go somewhere where I could learn and where there were opportunities to develop... I never thought I would end up working in this type of sector, however the apprenticeship at Amey looked interesting and varied - I applied for the job, got it and haven’t looked back since.” Craig Freeman – Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice

Investors in People

Amey became the first business in its sector to gain company-wide Investors in People (IiP) Gold and then IiP Champion Status in 2013. The Champion programme recognises organisations that lead by example in the way they manage, engage and develop people. We now promote the principles of IiP to other organisations.

Amey Apprenticeship Academy and Graduate Programmes

We hope that our graduate and apprentice target will bring youth, enthusiasm and the latest industry innovations into our business. We will continue to address the shortfall of engineers in the UK through our network of 50 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassadors who visit schools and colleges to encourage pupils to seek jobs in our industry.

Learning and DevelopmentOur aim is to ensure that everyone at Amey feels that they are able to make a full contribution to the company and are able to develop and pursue a successful career. We have established a number of award winning initiatives to support this.

Over the last five years, Amey has continued to invest in training where competitors have cut back; giving us a competitive edge and supporting the increase in our bid win rate.

Online Academy

In June 2010 we launched the Amey Academy, which offers staff an innovative and exciting approach to developing themselves and their careers. It serves as a point of access for a wide range of training resources that allow staff to learn and develop skills in ways that suit them. The Academy has evolved into a range of learning and development programmes, including a People Manager Programme for all new team leaders, a Leadership Foundations Programme for middle managers, and a number of senior leadership programmes in partnership with our parent company Ferrovial.

Developing Managers for the Future

To support our growth plans, Amey has developed a full suite of programmes to support every management band of employee in Amey.

These include Talent Tracker (a programme to develop high potential individuals identified in early career stages), our popular People Management Programme, our Leadership Foundation Programme, our International Management Programme and our Leadership Development Programme which is run in conjunction with our parent company Ferrovial.

We run a number of ‘drive your career’ workshops to help employees learn from what successful people have done and how to avoid the potential pitfalls.

Keeping people safe, every dayNo-one comes to work to get hurt. Our aim is to keep all 21,000 employees, the public, our suppliers, our customers and our partners safe every day. Our ‘Target Zero’ campaign focuses on just this – striving for zero harm in our daily business. We will never knowingly put anyone to work in an unsafe environment, nor will we condone risk-taking.

How do we deliver this?• We get the basics right by having solid foundations for health and safety

• We manage and control risk so that safe delivery becomes habitual

• We match our health and safety behaviour to appropriate outcomes

Building Solid FoundationsWhen it comes to safety, we believe there should be no difference between the things we say and the things we do. ‘Keeping people safe, every day’ requires us to get the basics right through solid foundations; strong, active and committed leadership, contemporary management systems and assured, informed and compliant business. We are 100% accredited to OHAS 18001 and use this to guide our continuous improvement via annual ‘Target Zero Action Plans’.

Delivering Safety at Work‘Keeping people safe, every day’ requires a constant focus on the way we manage and control risk so that safety becomes habitual. We aim to ensure our places are safe to work, the right tools are used for the right job and people are working together to prevent accidents and achieve zero harm. We never knowingly put anyone to work in an unsafe environment, nor do we condone risk-taking.

Award-Winning Approach to Road Risk

Amey launched a hard-hitting safety DVD, ‘Changing Behaviours – What Does It Take?’ which features powerful scenes of near misses and accidents on the motorway and is designed to make us think about what more we can do to keep ourselves, our colleagues, and road users safe. We also gave our full support to a national radio campaign, in collaboration with the Highways Agency and other supply chain members, to raise awareness on what road users can do to help keep road workers safe.

Our Safety Culture

Amey are working with The Keil Centre to put into place Amey’s ‘Safety Culture Framework’. Their Chartered Psychologists and Registered Ergonomists will help guide Amey in implementing practical steps to support the development of capable, healthy and safe people. They have helped us develop descriptive positive behaviours, which will dramatically improve the Safety Culture and drive down accident and incident rates.

Achieving Successful OutcomesTo be successful in keeping people safe every day, we believe that everyone should be accountable for their own actions and behaviour. We look to recognise success, share our learnings and promote personal responsibility.

• We were chosen to present at the 2014 European Road Safety Conference on our award-winning young driver courses

• 92% of our employees believe that Amey takes Health and Safety in the workplace seriously

Target ZeroWe have recently re-launched our company wide health and safety campaign – ‘Target Zero: Let’s make it happen together’, which will support employees to focus their attention on safety. This is managed locally through Target Zero Actions Plans, Visible Felt Leadership and creating a culture which makes it easy to speak up and report close calls.

Accident Frequency Rate

We recently ended our contract of the Highways Agency’s Area 9 Managing Agent Contractor (MAC), where we maintained sections of the M6 and M5. This is a great example of where over the life of a full contract - the equivalent of 2.7 million hours of work - we went without incurring one reportable incident. This was a result of visible leadership, investigation and response to close calls, as well as various safety initiatives, including support and sponsorship of the Highways Agency’s own annual regional ‘road safety week’.

Innovative Approach to Measure Progress

We use a Balanced Safety Scorecard (BSS) to get a much richer picture of our safety performance and progress. The scorecard is reported on a monthly basis and is made up from six measurements. Two of them measure the harm that has occurred to our people, while four measure the things we are doing to prevent harm. Each gets a score of either -1 (bad), 0 (neither good nor bad) or +1 (good). We then add them up to get a ‘balanced’ total of between +6 (very good) and -6 (very bad).

Protecting and enhancing the environmentWe understand that natural resources are vital to our existence. Our landscapes and wildlife are inseparable from our culture and our health, and our wellbeing is closely linked to the quality of our air, water, soils and biological resources. We are committed to environmental best practice and seek to safeguard our planet’s finite resources both for today and the future.

How do we deliver this?• We address our impact on and adaptation for climate change; focusing

on low carbon transport, energy reduction and resource use

• We minimise our use of materials and resources through design and management

• We conserve and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services

Lifecycle Approach to Fleet Management

At Amey we support our environmental commitment to reduce carbon and transport costs by supplying fleet vehicles that are safe, reliable, low emission, fuel economic and appropriate for each individual business need. Our overall aim is to reduce the numbers of vehicles we have on the roads, which will not only reduce emissions, but also lower the likelihood of traffic collisions.

Reducing our Carbon FootprintClimate change and carbon management have become increasingly important to Amey and our clients as we seek to both understand our full impacts, and then reduce them. At both corporate and account level, we measure our carbon footprint, set reduction targets and seek new ways of working to reduce our direct and indirect footprint. We are currently on track to achieve our goal to reduce our footprint by 20% by 2020 (normalised by £million turnover, using 1990 baseline).

Using Resources EfficientlySustainable consumption and production is about achieving economic growth while respecting environmental limits, finding ways to minimise damage to the natural world, and making use of the Earth’s resources in a sustainable way. Amey is committed to obtaining materials and resources which are ethically sourced, and where possible made from reused or recycled content. This includes procuring FSC wood and timber, using rain water harvesting, and recycling aggregates for roads. We aim to reduce our water footprint (both direct and indirect) and influence our customers to use sustainable alternatives where possible.

Recycled Aggregates

In our highways operations we have our own capability to manufacture aggregates. In Staffordshire we recycle over 50,000 tonnes per annum with an additional 20-30,000 tonnes per annum from smaller contracts.

This represents a saving of over £500,000 on aggregates purchase, tipping costs and transport. It also generates significant carbon benefits from transport avoided.

Protecting our Natural CapitalAlthough Amey does not own any land, we acknowledge that the infrastructure we manage, and the way we manage it has a significant impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

We develop and implement numerous Biodiversity Action Plans on our contracts, employ specialist environmentalists to undertake environmental impact assessments, and partner with local organisations such as the Wildlife Trusts, The Conservation Trust, and Groundwork.

Managing our Diverse ImpactsWe use Balanced Environmental Scorecards – made up of indicators bespoke to each part of the business to ensure we focus on the most relevant impacts for the service we’re delivering. These are made up of both behaviour and outcome based indicators.

Energy Savings Through LEDs

Amey has been appointed by Heathrow Airport to deliver the design of their runway rehabilitations project. LED technology was incorporated in Amey’s design – which is a first on this type of project for Heathrow Airport. This will reduce electricity consumption and carbon emissions by over 50%. Heathrow Airport expects to make a return on their investment in LED technology within 3 years.

Generating Power from Waste

Work started in summer 2014 on the Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park - a new waste treatment facility, designed and managed by Amey which will deal with Milton Keynes’ black sack waste in a sustainable way. State-of-the-art mechanical treatment and heat energy recovery technologies will be brought together to make the most of rubbish from households and businesses across the borough. The new facility will open in 2016.

Supporting Local EconomiesWe understand the importance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to the UK economy, and aim to engage with SMEs on all our accounts.

We deliver programmes to support and help build capacity for local commerce and business through use of SMEs, social enterprises and not-for-profit organisations.

Our supported local partner model enables SMEs to start up, providing new employment and positive economic impacts on communities in which we work.

Promoting Education, Skills and EmploymentWe conduct targeted employment, skills and training programmes aimed at disadvantaged and outreach groups such as the unemployed, young people, ex-offenders and ex-military. We have 50 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassadors who visit schools and colleges to encourage pupils to seek jobs in our industry.

Skills for employment

Together with the Basement Advisory Centre, colleagues based in The Matchworks, Liverpool have coached over 100 homeless people in areas such as CV writing, practicing for job interviews, IT skills and job searching. The team has also developed and delivered employability workshops. Hayley Ward, from the centre, said ”Amey’s support has made a real difference in our effort to challenge homelessness and the issues that lead to it”.

Social Enterprises in the Supply Chain

Amey is proud to have selected Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) as one of its key supply chain partners to provide reflective road signs nation-wide. RBLI is a forward-thinking charitable organisation that offers a diverse range of support services across welfare, property and employment services. It’s manufacturing arm provides employment opportunities for individuals with a disability or health condition as well as ex-military personnel who have been injured whilst serving in the armed forces.

Duke of Edinburgh

In January 2014, we developed a new Strategic Partnership with the DofE to support disadvantaged young people. The aim of this partnership is to improve the life chances and employability of thousands of young people facing particular difficulties. This will support the DofE’s aim to increase the number of young people that sign up to the award by 300,000 a year by 2016/17 with 20% of these to be disadvantaged young people.

Protecting and Conserving Local EnvironmentsWe seek to contribute to creating low carbon communities that conserve the natural environment and minimise the use of resources. We realise Amey can’t do this alone and therefore look to local groups, not-for-profit organisations and local or central authorities to partner and engage with for continuous improvement.

Being Active in the CommunityWe have a range of schemes which show that we don’t just talk, we do. At an individual level, we seek to empower our employees to participate in charities and community projects, providing each of our employees with one paid day per year to support the initiative of their choice. Additionally, an annual fund is available to support employee charity fundraising activities, with up to £3,000 awarded to teams or £1,000 to individuals. At an account level, Community Engagement Plans are used to focus regional efforts and maximise benefit.

Birmingham Charter for Socially Responsible Business

The Birmingham Business Charter for Social Responsibility ensures businesses working on behalf of the city council are maximising social value opportunities. Amey’s highways contract was awarded charter status in recognition of having accepted an action plan detailing how the company will deliver benefits to Birmingham through the charter’s principles.
