    bringing interest to the site.

Step 3Construction of the LadigaCenter, consolidating the

    final program.

Site Selection and Efficiencyof the Urban Form

The site selected has an intimate

relation with the main theme of thedesign: trails. The Ladiga Centerproposal is strategically placed onthe intersection of the Chief LadigaTrail and a local trail that connectsthe site to the downtown area. Thedesign considers the development ofa greenbelt connecting the west partof the city with downtown.

    Design Phasing

With a quick study ofJacksonvilles urban morphologyand we can see how the anchorpoints of the city are bad positioned. The has grown along a North/South,following the road that crosses thecity. This pattern is reinforced bythe Walmart at south of the city. Thediagrams show how the site selectedfor the Ladiga Center impacts thedensity and, therefore, the efficiencyof the urban form of Jacksonville ifcompared to the impact caused bythe Walmart shop. Spread-out citiesare unsustainable, inefficient andlack the urban qualities that providecultural and intellectual active livesfor their citizens.

The factor of density can begraphically represented by comparingthe polygon created when the mainattractor points are connected tothe smallest circle we can draw

    Design Process andInspiration

Trails are a path to cover big

distances. In the processing ofexperiencing a trail, the perspectiveis an important factor because it is theway we perceive objects in differentdistances. The design process startswith the idea of linear elements thatcreate a sense of perspective and alsoframes the views of the landscape. The perspective is a constant themein Architectural Design since artistsmastered the representation of suchduring the Renascence.

One of the most recognizableexamples of exploring perspective

in Architecture is probably tienne-Louis Boulles drawing for theinterior of the French NationalLibrary.

The program follows a logic ofcross-programing in which differentuses complement each other andassure that the complex could workin every season and reach for manyuser groups. As part of the designprocess, a graphic representationof the program was adopted tounderstand the possible uses as acloud of ideas that would be slowlyturned into the building itself.

    Interiors and VisualConnections

    The main vertical circulation

of the building is its ramp. It isbased on the idea of movementthat comes from the conceptuallink to trails. The architecturalvoyage follows the direction oflight and pursues the great viewsof the surrounding. Having this inmind, the ramp is positioned inan axis that crosses the building

and is defined by two big openingsthat frame the landscape.Thefollowing diagram shows anearly conceptual sketch of the

    Design Diagram and SiteRelations

    Materiality and Detailing

Water is an important part of

the materiality of the design. Itsa conceptual link to the creek andis placed along the circulationaxis, crossing the building. TheDamascus steel pattern was alsoan inspiration for the interiors ofthe caf.
