Chapter members presented a proposed amendment to the Chapter Board at the May 17, 2014 Board Meeting. After review and discussion, the Board concluded the proposed by-law change was for the good of the chapter and was favorable to having the by-law amendment brought to the general membership. The members present at the June 21st meeting approved of the amendment going forward for vote at the November 15 2014 general meeting. The proposed amendment was approved unanimously at the Nov 15th 2014 meeting by the membership pre-sent.
Amended Article 5:
Article 5. OFFICERS of the CHAPTER shall consist of a President, a Vice-president a Secretary and a Treasurer. DIRECTORS of the CHAPTER shall consist of five members at large. No per-son shall be elected without prior consent
Officers will be elected for two (2) year terms and Directors will be elected for (3) year terms in the following fashion:
a. A Nominating Committee, consisting of three (3) members, shall be appointed by the Presi-dent at the last business meeting preceding the ANNUAL MEETING. Said Committee will present a slate of prospective Officers and Directors for election at the ANNUAL MEETING.
b. Election to each office will take place at the designated Annual Meeting with additional nominations to the recommended slate accepted from the floor.
c. A majority vote of those members in good standing (paid up dues) present will constitute the election.
d. Director’s terms shall overlap. Therefore, the first year of Director Elections, the term of one Director shall be for two years, two Directors for four years and two Directors for six
IMPORTANT- - Amended By-Law
At the Nov. meeting Judy Watkins introduced a proposed Amendment to Article V and asked for discussion: Change: Adds a second vice president.
Article 5. OFFICERS of the CHAPTER shall consist of a President, a First Vice-president, a Second Vice
President, a Secretary and a Treasurer. DIRECTORS of the CHAPTER shall consist of five members at
large. No person shall be elected without prior consent
Rationale: Change will increase the opportunity for chapter members to participate in the govern-ance of the chapter. Change will improve chapter governance continuity by allowing a vice presi-dent to shadow the president allowing the vice president a greater understanding of the presi-dent’s position if he or she decides to run for president. This proposal is still open for further dis-cussion.

“Can you do me a little favor?” To Rick Hendrix that meant he was going to be involved in something over weight, over length or “hot” or all of the above. And he knew he was going to do it because Mick was the kind of leader he could follow. He always had your back. Mick always did what his customers required and a few rules wouldn’t keep him from getting the job done. If you ever needed to know something about an old Kenworth he was certainly the man to talk to. And if you needed a little room to work on your truck, like Rick did, he would loan you some shop space. Those who knew him will truly miss him and all the knowledge and humor he possessed. A Message from Kevin Black Regional V/P American Truck Historical Society To – Chapter Secretaries of Western WA From – Kevin Black RVP Western WA/AK 2015 Kick Off
ATHS Members 2014 has wound down and by the time you read this we will be into 2015. 2014 was a major transition year for ATHS at the national level. Several significant changes in how we do busi-ness and fund ourselves have taken off and are working. The new Executive Director is in place now and we will see how things continue to transition in the coming months. I will be at the National Board Meeting at the end of January in KC. Work changes probably will prevent me from at least one of the chapter meet-ings in January since I will have precious few weekends at home this time around. I am always available by e-mail located in the back of Wheels of Time. That is the most reliable means of getting hold of me. It has been a major work transition for me as well this past year and it is still on going. I suspect 2015 will be very busy and my ability to be at events will continue to be hampered at times but I will continue to make every effort to make the ones when I am not away overseas or working.
I would like to lay out some goals for each of the chapters this year.
1. 5% growth of the chapter
2. Some sort of effort that supports the mission of ATHS at the national level. Be it an effort to collect materials for the library, a fundraiser and/or submission of some sort of award for a local person or company. Remember we are a historical society not a club though we tend to be pretty club like in many activities.
3. Some sort of local community charity support event or effort. I know these things have been done in the past. Continue those you have and maybe look into something new or different that might reflect well on the chapter and society.
4. A concerted effort and strategy to reach younger perspective members. 5. Better communications through the chapters. Needs to be beyond the newsletter. I know not eve-
ryone does e-mail but that is changing. A working phone tree also needs to be there too. If there is a short notice formal or informal event, a mass e-mail and also phone tree should be employed with specific members tasked to call and talk or leave messages for a number of members. If you had a group of folks who could make 5 phone calls to the rest, that would do it.
6. I would like to say a few more things about our Chapter Operations. Every member has a part to
play and somehow they can contribute to the success of the chapter. It may be small things or it may be in taking your turn in a leadership position. It may take making a step out of your comfort zone and volunteering and or accepting the nomination for one of those positons where you might not be totally comfortable. Those of you not filling those positions can help by assisting those people. Don’t just come to be entertained, do your part to help sustain our organization.
Lastly in regards to my position as RVP. Given my work life, this position has never been some-
thing I could fully fulfill the way I might like to short of winning the lottery and retiring. It is also not a position that I will fill on a permanent basis. I will be looking to pass the baton on here in the future in the next few years without a set date at this point. I don’t see myself going on as a RVP (for Western WA/AK) beyond the Oregon show but will if needed. Probably the best option for the chapters and for my abilities would be for me to transition to an at-large position where I continue my co-chairmanship of the IT committee or turn it over entirely for the time being and focus on things at the chapter level. This is nothing that requires an immediate action but something I think is good to share.
Let’s have a productive and safe 2015. Let’s improve the society and our chapters. Don’t
forget to have fun while doing it and sharing that fun with others.

Semis, the rest of the story, well at least more of the story…..
In a previous issue of our NW Chapter newsletter we ran a story on the “Semi” and August Charles Fruehauf was mentioned as a builder of one of the first semi trailers. In 1914, he built a trailer at the request of a merchant to carry his pleasure boat. The merchant was please with the trailer so he asked Fruehauf to build additional trailers which the merchant would use to haul lum-ber and wood products. Fruehauf called his product a "semi-trailers". In 1918, Fruehauf incorpo-rated his trailer manufacturing business, and the Fruehauf Trailer Company was formed.
Around the same time, 1910, John C. Endebrock who worked at the Sechler Company, one of the largest manufacturers of carriages in the world, came to believe that the days of the horse-drawn wagon were coming to an end and would soon be obsolete. Endebrock believed the future would be in trailers pulled by motor vehicles and set out to de-sign a trailer that could be towed by a Ford Model "T" passenger car, then the leader in the light-car field. Initial experiments surrounded the dynamics of a spring wagon construction, but it was determined that this would not work. A totally new trailer had to be designed using the principles of automobile dy-namics. This new unit featured an angle iron chassis frame with cross-members, horn-type front spring hangers, a knuckle-type front axle, automobile springs, artillery wheels, roller bearings, and a draw bar with housed spring sections. In 1915, after months of rigorous road testing, the new trailer was introduced to the world. The name "Trailmobile" was chosen since the unit would "trail" an automobile. The wide acceptance of these first automotive trailers prompted the Sechler organization to change its name to The Trailmobile Company. What is believed to be Endebrock’s biggest con-tribution to the trucking industry was a devise that allowed a single driver to easily couple/uncouple the tractor to the trailer. The design was patented in 1919 after several years of Endebrock search-ing for an easier solution to attach and disengage the semi trailer, similar to how train cars were locked. Before this invention it took three men and jacks to unhook the trailer. After the introduction of the fifth wheel de-sign, which has changed very little to this day, one man could complete the task. The new design used a jaw with a spring locking device mounted on a fifth wheel plate that was attached to the tractor frame. The fifth wheel locked into a king pin on the bottom of the front end of the trailers. This design is very similar to the tractor fifth wheel and trailer king pin used to couple trac-tors and trailers today.

Rapid truck in Detroit. It had a 2-cylinder engine
and was rated at I-ton. (They had built a single-

was underpowered). They then formed the Rapid
