Stamp Act

• Passed by Parliament in 1765• First attempt to tax colonists directly• The tax was paid in silver coins which

were rare• Tax money used to pay the British soldiers

stationed in the colonies

Stamp Act Continued

• Each sheet of every legal document needed a stamp showing that a tax had been paid– Newspapers– Diplomas – Wills– Playing cards

• Colonists were angry about the new tax and fought against it

Protesting the Stamp Act

• “No taxation without representation” – Representatives sent to the Stamp Act Congress in

New York to petition against the Stamp Act– Argued that Parliament had no right to tax

colonies• Protests in the colonies and boycotts of British

goods led Parliament to cancel the Stamp Act in 1766

Tea Act

• A tax on tea was imposed with the Townshend Act

• Colonies boycott imported British goods and turn to smuggling in tea.

• The Tea Act put a stop to the illegal smuggling of tea into the colonies.

• Tension led to the Boston Tea party.

Townshend Acts

• Passed by Parliament in 1767• Created by Charles Townshend as a way to tax

the colonies “without offense”• Taxes were placed on imported

goods like lead, paper, paint, glass, and tea• Boycotts and protests escalate

and turn violent

Tension Escalates

• To prevent riots and protests 1,000 redcoats were sent to Boston

• The soldiers presence in Boston only angered the colonists – The soldiers were a reminder of Britain’s control

over the colonists– The colonists and soldiers often taunted and

insulted each other

Boston Massacre

• March 1770 a group of boys began throwing snowballs at a soldier

• More soldiers gathered and fearing a riot the soldiers began firing into the crowd– Five colonists were killed

• In April 1770 in response to the boycotts and riots Parliament repealed the Townshend Acts expect for the tax on tea.
