In 1772, a group of pioneers from North Carolina and Virginia decided that they had had enough of meddling British authorities. They purchased a piece of land from the Cherokee Indians west of the Appalachian Mountains in what is now Tennessee, established their own government and founded the "Watauga Association". Many historians consider this act to be the birth of an independent America.
