    THE FIVE DEVELOPMENTAL

    PHASES OF AMERICAN KENPO

    The Early Days

Americ an Kenp o Kara te ha s undergone five distinct phases of deve lopm ent a s view ed

from the belt c urriculum. In its ea rliest inca rna tion, the system ha d only three b elt c olors

white, brown, and b lac kand deg rees within the w hite a nd b row n leve ls. There wa s no

sta nd ard c urriculum until the ea rly 1960s.

The 32 Tec hniq ue System

In the ea rly 1960s, Ed Pa rker wanted to system ize the c urriculum to ena b le bette r

franc hising o f his ma rtial art stud ios. During this time he c rea ted the first tea c hing m anua ls

and d ivided a ll tec hniques into four co lored belt leve lsOrange, Purp le, Blue a nd Green.

Eac h be lt leve l c onta ined 32 self-defense tec hniques a long with a num ber of presc ribedbasics, forms and sets. In addition, there was a Green-Orange Belt group which consisted

of a dd ing e xtensions to the 32 tec hniques found in the Orange Belt.

The 24 Tec hniq ue System

In time, as new ma teria l was ad de d to the system , the belt co lors we re e xpa nde d to

Yellow, Orang e, Purple, Blue, Green, 3rd Deg ree Brow n Belt, 2nd Deg ree Brow n Belt, 1st

Deg ree Brow n Belt and Blac k Belt. To ha ve e noug h ma teria l to tea c h w ithin these ne w

levels, the 32 tec hniques per be lt we re reduc ed to 24 per belt and mo tion wa s pulled from

forms 4, 5 and 6 to c om p lete c a teg ories of mo tion. In add ition, new sets and tec hnique

extensions were introd uc ed by som e o f his stud ents, which rec eived Mr. Pa rkers b lessing,

but we re not c rea ted b y him.

The sec ond version of the m anua l for 24 Tec hnique System c orrec ted the orde r of som e o f

the Orange Belt tec hniques and remo ved the follow ing tec hniques from the system :

INTELLECTUAL DEPARTURE, AGGRESSIVE TWINS, and SPREADING BRANC HES. In add ition, a

te c hnique c a lled THE PINCHER was c ha ng ed to THE GRASP OF DEATH. The 24 Tec hnique

System bec ame the o ffic ial curriculum for all sc hoo ls tea c hing Am eric an Kenp o w ith the

pub lica tion of Infinite Insights Into Kenpo in the early 1980s.

The 16 Tec hniq ue System

Prior to Ed Parker s dea th, som e stud ents introd uc ed the idea of reduc ing the numb er of

tec hniques per belt to 16. Though Ed Parker ha d a simila r idea seve ra l years ea rlier, only

the 24 Tec hnique wa s sanc tioned as the official curriculum.

The idea for a 16 Tec hnique System wa s pop ularized by Brian Duffy. He wa nted to red uc e

the numb er of tec hnique s a t the be ginning a nd spread the c urric ulum ove r an ad ditiona l

2 be lt levels. Many c om merc ial sc hoo ls ad op ted this new arrangement b ec ause it

significa ntly inc rea sed stud ent rete ntion a t the ea rly b elt levels.

    The Kenp o 5.0 System

In 2006, Jeff Spea kman c rea ted a hybrid of the last gene ra tion version of Am eric an Kenp o

by introd uc ing g round fight ing p rinc iples into the c urriculum. In add ition, tec hniques a re

taug ht w ithin c om bat models that greatly increases sponta neity.

    THE PROBLEM

Throug hout its deve lopm ent , Ed Parker held true to one idea standard iza tion. Althoug hthe c urric ulum evo lved over time, he knew tha t for the a rt to c ontinue to de velop

c onsistently and to ensure qua lity, the Kenpo System m ust be sta nd a rd ized . If eve ry sc hool

and eve ry instructo r taught the ir ow n version of Kenp o, then rank loses its meaning a nd the

a rt itself would b eg in to fragme nt. This wa s c learly ev ident a fter his dea th in 1990.

Shortly afte r his dea th, rank-see kers beg an to flou rish. New versions of Kenpo b eg an to

em erge to justify their new rank and to e nab le these individua ls to o b ta in exclusive

knowled ge of the system . This lust for rank and pow er qu ic kly erod ed the sta tus tha t

Kenp o onc e he ld in the ma rtial art c om munity the Ed Pa rker wo rked ha rd to b uild . Tod ay,

there a re m ore versions of Kenp o a nd mo re 10th Degree Blac k Belts than there has eve r

bee n throug hout its entire histo ry.

Though rank-see kers ha ve c erta inly contributed to the lac k of consistenc y in skill leve ls,

the systems themselves ha ve done so as we ll. In the 32 Tec hnique System the c urriculum is

spread to 1st Deg ree Blac k Belt; in the 24 Tec hnique System the same amo unt o f ma terial is

spread to 3rd Deg ree Blac k Belt; and in the 16 Tec hnique System the ma terial is sp rea d to

5th Deg ree Blac k Belt. This ha s lead som e ind ividua ls to c om pare ranks and ad just the ir

ac c ordingly. For examp le, a prac titioner who holds a 3rd Deg ree Blac k Belt in the 24

Tec hnique System see s a stud ent in the 16 Tec hnique System ea rn a 5th Deg ree Blac k Belt

for lea rning the same amo unt of ma teria l. So, he p rom ote s himself up to 5th Degree

Blac k Belt to ma ke it eq ua l . This has further dec rea sed the qua lity of p rac titione rs in

    Ame ric an Kenp o.

    ABOUT THIS BOOK

I am a strong believer in sta nd ard izing the Art. This is not to say tha t I wish to sta gna te the

a rt a nd ma ke it a trad itiona l art . On the c ontrary, I fee l that it is vital to the survival of

Kenp o, in qua lity and c rea tivity, to have a c om mo n ba se from which we all be gin and

    c an use a s a point of referenc e. In add ition, I fee l tha t it is imp ortant to view Kenp o a s a

whole throug hout its histo rica l develop me nt. These w ere the insp ira tions for this boo k.

Using actual historical materials such as film, notes and manuals, I have researched each

self-defense te c hnique to d esc ribe its deve lop me nt throug hout the history of the Kenp o

System . At a sing le g lanc e, you c an rea d the o rthod ox version of the defense a s we ll as

see how it wa s performed in its ea rly sta ges. Though I have use the 24 Tec hnique System a sa founda tion, this bo ok has be en o rga nized to enab le a prac titioner from any of the three

ma jor systems (16, 24 or 32) to q uickly referenc e the te c hnique.

I hop e tha t you will use this informa tion to ac hieve a g rea ter ap p rec ia tion for the a rt of

Ame ric an Kenp o and to c ontinue its de velopm ent a s we a ll strive for unity and

p roficienc y in the Art.

    TECHNIQUE

    1. With your left foo t, step tow ard 6:00 and form a right

neutral bow stance as you deliver a right hammering

inward b lock to the inside of the opponents right arm.

    Your left hand is positione d a t solar p lexus level to ac t a s

    a po sitiona l chec k.

By step ping a wa y from your op po nent, you increase the d istanc e

and give yourself more time to de fend.

A g ene ral rule is to g et yo ur dista nc e first AND THEN the rota tion.

The right inward b loc k should not knock the o pp onent s arm a wa y

as it would create a rotation and may invite the opponents left

hand into action. Instead, your right arm makes contact just below

the opponents elbow and frictionally pulls toward the opponents

right wrist. This will crea te an Ang le of Disturba nc e a nd mo me nta rily

c on trol his Dimensiona l Zones.

    2. Imm ed iately deliver a right front snap ping ba ll kic k to the

    op ponent s groin.

This kic k will con trol the o pp one nt s Height Zone by fo rcing him to

bend forward at the waist. It will also provide you with Borrowed

Rea c h for the next target.

The kick ma y trav el throug h a transitiona l ca t stanc e p rior to kicking.

    3. Plant tow ard 12:00 and fo rm a right neutral bow stance

to c hec k the op pone nt s right knee. Simultaneo usly

deliver a right outward downward diagonal handsword

strike to the right side of the opponents neck.

Immediately slide your right hand (after the strike) to his

right wrist to ac t a s a prec autionary chec k (reb ound ing

    check).

The 1975 IKKA Red Ma nua l ind ica tes planting towa rd 11:00. This will

ensure that the b uc kle to the right leg is prop erly executed .

Som e p rac titione rs plant in a right wide kneel stance to utilize

    Gravitational Ma rriage.

NOTE: The 1975 IKKA Red Ma nua l and the 1987 IKKA Stud ioMa nuals do not indica te a n Angle of Depa rture.

This tec hnique wa s origina lly

c alled Retrea ting Sword. In this

    v e r s i o n , t h e h a n d s w o r d

    immediatley followed the block

and a right front snapping ball

    kick to the opponents groin

    concluded the technqiue. After

the kick was delivered, the right

    foot planted back toward 6:00.

    Unfortunately, many students

were retreating too early and, in

    effect, moving away from the

ha ndswo rd strike. To c orrec t this

    e r ro r , t he t echn ique was

    changed by delaying the

    handsword with the kick.

This tec hnique wa s origina lly

taught as a defense against apunc h. In late r versions of Kenpo ,

it was plac ed at the # 1 position in

Yellow Belt was made into a

defense against a lapel grab. It

should be note d tha t in its present

    form, this technique is better

suited as a defense against a

    punch or an attempted lapel

grab. Once the grab is made,

    however, the concept of Get

the Upper Hand must follow. In

    such circumstances, utilize the

    following variation:

    Step 1

With your left hand pin the

op po nents right ha nd to your left

shoulder as you step back with

your left foot and form a right

neutral b ow stanc e. This ac tion

    should pull the opponents right

    arm controlling his Dimensional

    Zones. Deliver a right hammering

inward block to either the nerves

inside his right arm or, if range

    a llow s, to the b ridge o f his nose.

    1. With your left foot, step toward 7:30 to form a right

neutral bow stanc e as you simultaneo usly exec ute a right

outward downward diagonal bloc k to the o utside o f the

op pone nt s right leg . Your left hand c hec ks high.

Step ping tow ard 7:30 moves you off the Line of Attac k and your

righ t hand travels from 11:00 to 5:00. If you step bac k to 6:00, you r

right ha nd travels from 10:30 to 4:30. In other words, if you step on the

+ sign, you block on the X; if you step on the X, you block on

the + sign. Experience will show that it is more advantageous to

step on the X . In this instanc e, your b lock essentially bec om es a

    parry.

When the bloc k is prope rly execute d, the o pp onent s bo dy w ill turn

sligh tly to his left. The b loc k shou ld a dd itiona lly con trol his Wid th b y

The 1975 IKKA Red Ma nua l desc ribed the b lock as a right d eflec ting

    2. Without hesita tion, e xec ute a forward push-drag

maneuver to deliver a right inward elbow strike to the

op ponent s right rib c ag e or fac e. Your left hand c hec ks

inward toward and between the opponents right

    shoulder and biceps.

Your left c hec k will slight ly prece de your right inwa rd elbo w strike.

If you chec k the opp onent s do wn, deliver the elbo w to his fac e; if

you chec k his arm ac ross, de liver the elbo w to his ribs.

A d owna rd de flec ting bloc k is used be c ause it simultaneo usly blocks

and cocks your right arm for the elbow strike. If your block traveled

from 9:00 to 3:00, you will have to draw your right arm back before

you could deliver the elbow strike. By blocking toward the rear, you

place your arm in the rear-most position. All you have to do is bend

toward your right foot and form a left 45-degree cat

stance facing 10:30 as you defend with a left extended

outward handsword block to the right inner wrist of theopponent. Your right hand (hand open) acts as a check

in front of your solar plexus.

The d efense motions are designed to check the attack and not

block them. Your defense footwork should move you off the Line of

Attac k and a wa y from da nger. They should be executed in one

    smooth continuous motion.

Your left foot will point towa rd the o pp onent s groin (centerline).

The 1987 IKKA Stud io Ma nua l desc ribed using a right inwa rd b lock.

This has ca used som e c onfusion w ith prac titione rs thinking tha t the y

The 1975 IKKA Red Ma nua l desc ribed using a left/right c hicken kickusing the left foot to strike the opponents groin and the right foot to

strike his sola r plexus. It further describes p lant ing yo ur right foo t b ac k

to 4:30 to form a left neutral bo w stanc e a nd p lacing your hand s in a

defensive position. A later revision eliminated the right kick and

    BASE TECHNIQUE

    1. With your left hand , pin the opp onent s left hand to your

head . Simultaneously step to 6:00 and form a right

neutral bow stance as you deliver a right vertical middle

knuckle fist strike to the nerves in the oppone nt s left a rm

    pit.

The m ec hanics of this first mo tion m irrors the m ot ions found in LONE

    KIMONO.

By ap plying the p inning c hec k with your left hand , you will neutralize

the opp one nt s ab ility to c rea te p ain. This pin should b e ma de

downward toward your head as your head presses unnoticably

upwa rd . This will c rea te a vice -like effec t and c ause pa in to the

    opponents left hand.

As it is pinning, your left a rm should b e in an up wa rd b lock position

(positional block) shielding your head and face from strikes that

    c ould b e d elivered from his right hand .

When you step ba c k, your hea d should mo ve w ith your bod y. In

ad dition, the step ba c k will control his Dime nsional Zones and c reate

    an Angle o f Disturba nce .

    2. Pivot c lockwise and form a right forward bow stance as

you deliver a left thrusting heel palm strike to the

opponents jaw simultaneously with a right extended

outward bloc k to the inside o f your op pone nt s left a rm.

Before you p ivot into your right forwa rd bo w stanc e, strike to the

inside of your opponents left forearm with a right vertical outward

block. As you pivot into the right forward bow stance, your right armwill form a n extended outwa rd b lock.

The 1975 IKKA Red Ma nual ende d the self-defense tec hnique with

    the thrusting heel palm strike.

Unlike the me thod desc ribe d in the 1975 IKKA Red Ma nua l, the

mo de rn method o f executing the thrusting hee l palm strike is to a llow

your left hand to slide down to the side of your head prior to

delivering the strike. This a llow s you to a lign your heel pa lm p roperly

along the p ath of trave l.

You c an e longate your circ le a nd strike in a c lockwise m otion by

utiliizing a right outward upward diaongal raking back knuckle strike

or even a claw or eye slice/poke prior to delivering your extendedoutward block.

The 1975 IKKA Red Ma nua l

    described the technique in the

    following ma nner:

    Step 1

Pin the opponents hand to your

head as you step back with your

left foot and form a right neutral

    bo w stanc e a s you d eliver a right

    vertical thrusting middle knuckle

    fist strike.

    Step 2

While in your neutral bow stance,

strike to the inside of the

    opponents left forearm with a

    right vertical outward block as

your left hand cocks palm up at

    your left hip.

    Step 3

Pivot clockwise and form a right

    forward bow stance as you

deliver a left thrusting heel palm

strike to his jaw while switching

    your vertical outward block into

an extended outwa rd b loc k.
