TREATING MYOFASCIAL PAIN

The MyoRehab Seminar Series is an extraordinary training program specifically designed for professional healthcare practitioners treating pain patients. It is the intention of the series to add to and enhance the existing knowledge and experience of every clinician searching for the next level of excellence.

Whether you are a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, the MyoRehab Seminar Series will infuse your practice with a comprehensive pro-tocol that will enable you to experience unprecedented success when treating even the most complex pain patient. Each seminar is packed with practical knowledge you will find applicable in your treatment room the very next day.

The MyoRehab Seminar Series is based on the work of Doctors Janet G. Travell and David G. Simons, co-authors of Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual. The series is dynamic and continues to evolve with the contributions of luminaries including Jan Dommerholt, Andrew Fischer, Robert Gerwin, Karl Lewitt, Aaron Mattes, Thomas Myers, Bonnie Prudden and many others.

Individual seminars can be taken to fulfill continuing education require-ments. (See page 6) Or, take the entire seminar series and become eligible for participation in our National Certification Program for Manual Trigger Point Therapy. (See page 15).

“After 34 years as a physical therapist I felt I had maxed out my potential to help others. My career has been given a shot in the arm and I am no longer planning to take early retirement. I now have so much more to give my patients. My clinical productivity has increased as my patient attendance has improved. Patients are willing to wait the 2 to 4 weeks necessary for them to be seen for their first visit as they have heard about my new skills. My treatments are more timely and efficient as I can now go right to the problem rather than search for it. This seminar series is so invigorating that I often have to remind myself to inhale. I leave each workshop giddy with excitement. My heartfelt thanks and the thanks of my patients to Vicky and George.” Jolinda Dallin, PT - Magdalena, New Mexico

AN OVERVIEW OF THE SEMINAR SERIES

Myofascial Trigger Points (MTrPs) are frequently overlooked or misunderstood as a source of musculoskeletal pain. Studies have shown that as many as 93% of all pain patients seeking medical intervention presented with Myofascial Trigger Points.

Our seminar series will give you the necessary tools to identify the source and successfully treat myofascial pain and its concomitant motor and autonomic dysfunction. In the MyoRehab Seminar Series, you will learn a complete treatment protocol that will be immediately applicable and empower you whatever your discipline.

The Manual Trigger Point Therapy Treatment Protocol is based on the work of Doctors Janet G. Travell and David G. Simons, co-authors of Myofas-cial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Man-ual. This protocol will enhance the way you practice by providing you with the insights, procedures and efficacy you’ve been hoping to find in other offerings.

The series begins with Principles and Practices, the prerequisite for the entire series. You are required to take this seminar only one time. It will be given four times during the academic year to allow entry into the series at four junctures. Many participants review the Principles and Practices at least once during the series.

Six Core Seminars focus on regional pain and dysfunction

while the Advanced Techniques Seminars focus on the mechanical and neurologi-cal relationships of involved muscles and joints. The Lab: Clinical Applications seminar provides practical experience developing a treatment plan by employing scenario-based instruction.

David G. Simons

Janet G. Travell

“This seminar series has had astronomical ramifications for me! The knowledge I have accumulated during the course of your series has en-abled me to easily determine a treatment plan for every patient who walks in my door, including patients who need to be referred out. The most im-portant part of this series reminds us to listen to our patients and have compassion for their needs.” Barbara Knighton, DOM - Albuquerque, New Mexico

8

Page 9: American Institute for Myofascial Studies Brochure

PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES The Principles and Practices seminar (8 Contact Hours) will provide the foundation for all seminars in the series. It is available four times during the academic year.

Attendance is required only once, prior to attending any Core Seminars.

We begin with a brief history of the current understanding of Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) and continue with an in-depth exploration of the physiology of muscle and fascia designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of Myofascial Trigger Points (MTrPs).

The elements of a comprehensive treatment protocol are explained in detail leaving the participant with a foundation for treating acute and chronic pain. The protocol will provide a fool-proof method for developing a sound clinical basis for treatment of Myofascial Pain.

MPS can mimic the diagnoses of many common pain syndromes. Likewise, serious pathological syndromes can mimic myofascial pain. As a result, the concept of Differential Diagnosis will be addressed for most common pain complaints.

The seminar concludes with a dissection of the Trigger Point Manuals (Vol. 1 & 2) written by Doctors Travell and

Simons. These two comprehensive texts are an indispensable resource for the serious practitioner and required reading for those completing the entire seminar series.

Program Overview and Course Objectives

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

♦ Attend any Core Seminar in the MyoRehab Seminar Series ♦ Describe muscle physiology and the neurophysiology of MTrPs

♦ Recognize the most common factors that precipitate and perpetuate MPS

♦ Identify Perpetuating Factors and apply Corrective Actions

♦ Develop a clinical impression essential to establishing a sound treatment plan

♦ Demonstrate Manual Techniques to successfully inacti-vate Trigger Points

♦ Understand the principles of the Home Exercise Program as an integral part of a functional treatment

♦ Expand your knowledge at your own pace by learning how to navigate confidently and effectively through Volume 1 and 2 of Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual,

CORE: LOWER BODY

Fol lowing the Pr incip les and Practices, the Seminar Series continues with three Lower Body Core seminars followed by Advanced Techniques: Lower Body seminar. All Core and Advanced seminars are two-days (16 contact hours each) and consist of lecture and guided hands-on practicum.

Program Overview and Course Objectives

♦ Review the detailed anatomy and function of each muscle involved in lower body pain ♦ Learn the locations of Trigger Points for each muscle and how to identify them ♦ Become familiar with the common symp- toms involved in lower body Myofascial Pain Syndrome ♦ Be able to identify common Precipitating and Perpetuating Factors of lower body Myofascial Pain Syndrome and apply Corrective Actions ♦ Become familiar with Differential Diagnosis

related to lower body pain and dysfunction ♦ Be able to identify and treat nerve entrapments, vascular and nerve

compressions and other significant phenomena contributing to pain and dysfunction

♦ Learn evaluation techniques including Range Of Motion Testing for each muscle covered

♦ Learn specific methods for inactivating MTrPs and correcting fascial distortions

♦ Develop a specific Home Exercise Program to prevent the return of pain and dysfunction

“This course has changed my perspective forever. We as therapists have “medicine” in our fingers, and with this technique we can actually release pain permanently. I now have tools I will use everyday.” Mara Weber, LMT - Rio Rancho, New Mexico

“MyoRehab seminars produce results. Every time I take another one of your seminars, I learn tons of new stuff. The investment is better than running a business advertisement in the Yellow Pages.” Barbara Knighton, DOM - Albuquerque, New Mexico

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES: LOWER BODY

The Advanced Techniques: Lower Body seminar draws heavily from the three preceding Core Seminars. While the Core Seminars ad-dress a regional pain approach, the Advanced Techniques seminar emphasizes the functional, mechanical and neurological relationships between muscles and joints of the lower body. (16 contact hours)

Program Overview and Course Objectives

The Advanced Techniques: Lower Body seminar will include:

♦ Quadratus Lumborum Stretch Technique

♦ ITB Release Protocol

♦ Wishbone Maneuver

♦ Protocol for Pelvic Dysfunction

♦ Knee Release Technique

♦ Ankle Release Technique

♦ Fore foot/mid foot Techniques After inactivating Myofascial Trigger Points (MTrPs) in muscles that produce postural distortion, joints may remain dysfunctional. This may cause MTrPs to re-establish.

You will learn Muscle Energy Techniques to restore normal joint function. This comprehensive expansion of the treatment protocol enables the body to maintain a neutral postural alignment.

Identifying and addressing Perpetuating Factors can be the difference between success or failure of any treatment. We will explore the most common of these for the lower body. You will learn how to identify and eliminate them.

Prerequisite for this seminar: LB-1. Mid and Low Back LB-2. Hip, Buttock and Pelvic and LB-3. Knee, Ankle and Foot

TESTING AND CERTIFICATION

Tests are NOT required for Continuing Education Contact Hours.

Upon completion of each seminar, proof of attendance will be issued. Tests are only required for those who wish to receive a Certificate of Achievement for their studies in the treatment of Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction. Successful testing is required to sit for the National Certification Examination.

Tests may be requested at registration or at any time during a seminar and will be issued at the completion of each seminar. A $30 late fee will be assessed for tests returned (postmarked) after the due date. (See page 7)

Each open book test consists of multiple choice and true or false questions based on the material covered. The test for the Lab: Clinical Applications will be an essay exam. The testing fee is $50.00 per test.

A minimum of 85% is required for a passing score. Your grade will be mailed to you. If a passing score is not achieved, tests may be re-taken at a cost of $50. To re-take a test, a request must be made within 30 days of the original test’s due date.

Tests for each seminar may only be taken twice within the academic year. If a participant fails to achieve a passing grade on the second attempt, the seminar must be retaken the next time it is offered. Participants will be allowed to progress to the next seminar, pass or fail. Upon successful completion of all tests, a Certificate of Achievement will be issued and qualify you to apply for the National Certification Examination.

To be eligible to receive a Certificate of Achievement, all seminars must be successfully completed within no more than two consecutive academic years. Lost or misplaced CE Contact Hour verification cards or Certificate of Achievement can be replaced for a fee of $5 plus postage.
