In August 6th, 2009 for the first time UNPAD SC AAPG visited to TOTAL core
room in Balikpapan. Mr. Wanasherpa as an assistance from TOTAL gave a short lecture
with theme “Basic Of Core Description”. He told that a good core description assist in
interpretation depositional environment, wire line log calibration, and stratigraphy well
correlation. Description core need type of litology include colour and grain size, type of
litology extended include coarsening upward or thickening upward, contact each
litology, thick of sediment, sediment structure, and content of carbonate cementation,
organic component, skeletal dispersion, or pyrite and siderite mineral. Beside that core
plug analysis gave information about porosity, permeability, and fluid saturation. After
that, he taught about explanation for basic study of core such as facies description,
facies classification (siquen analysis), sedimentation analysis, and the last but not the
least depositional environment interpretation.

Finished at presentation room, participant moved to Core Lab room not far from
TOTAL office showed core have been slab from well TOTAL field. Mr. Andang
Bachtiar as a speaker explains how we could see sediment structure from core to
fieldtrip participants. We had to cleaning core surface to see first, sediment structures
such as cross bed, parallel lamination, dewatering, bioturbation, and massive etc.
Second, sediment structures pursuant to formed energy from lowest to highest are
massive, lenticular, wavy, flaser, ripple, and cross bed. The last, differences of sharp
contact and gradational contact.

Muara Bayur is the second stop after Maryam River. This located is around 17
km from stop in SE direction. Depostional environment of this area is Upper Delta
Plain,it’s distinguish by appearance nipah vegetation and begun low salinity water to
fresh water. Like stop 1, we did grab sampling to knowing different characteristic of
lithology. This area is part of distributary channel system which fluvial processed
dominantly. We will try to measure the depth of the river with sonar tool to saw
morpholgy the river.

DAY 2, STOP-3 DATU ISLAND
In the stop 3, we went to Datu Island. The located of Datu Island in the sourthern part
of Modern Mahakam Delta. We did coring to know how to mechanism sedimentary
structure. The most litho facies that occured in this area are cross bedding sand,
heterolithic sand, horizontal laminated sand. Beside that in modern outcrop we can
founded mega-ripple and ripple mark formed by tide and wave. This mid-channel bar

DAY 2, STOP-4 MUARA BUJIT
Our last stop in Muara Bujit. We visited Muara bujit because we can observe
some of distributary mouth bar sediments in this area that is influenced by tidal
processes. At Muara bujit, we did coring in this location. Based on an observation of
sediment in surface, we can see the condition of environment such as energy and speed
of sedimentation. And finally Muara Bujit entering into Delta Front Sytem.

DAY 3, STOP-1 BATU PUTIH LIMESTONE
The location of Batu Putih Limestone is at Samarinda city. Geologically,Batu
Putih is the highest place at the anticlinorium Samarinda and these area are the hanging
wall from thurst fault that made Batu Putih well exposed until now.
Limestone in Mahakam Delta, include Batu Putih, were formed during
lower miocene. At present day, the limestone spread in the notrh side of mahakam river
with NNE-SSW direction, but in the south side of mahakam river, there were no
limestone was found. This indicate that at lower miocene time, Mahakam Delta was
located near these Limestone. According to Mr. Andang Bachtiar said, there were found

DAY 3, STOP-2 BY PASS PALARAN
After visited the Batu putih Limestone, we went to outcrops of by pass Palaran
located along high-way connecting from Samarinda to Tenggarong. The outcrop is 5
km from Samarinda. Geologically, the outcrops have strike direction NE-SW which
dipping to SE direction. Geological map suggests that the outcrops belongs to Pulau
Balang Formation or equivalent to Loa Duri Formation (Chamber, 1992).
These Outcrops are exposed 200 meters width and 15 meters height. The
outcrops consist of interbedded sandstone and shale that intercalated by thin layers of
coal or coaly shale. Sedimentary structures such cross-bedding and parallel laminations
are found in 6 meter sand body layer of this outcrop.

In one of the interbedded sandstone and shale layers, we found the burrows in
sandstone layer beneath shale. According to Mr. Andang Bachtiar said, the sedimentary
structures made by the animal that came from the unconsolidated shale layer.
These are suggesting influenced marine environment from marginal marine to
inner shelf paleobathymetri or probably associate with lower delta front - prodelta
environment. However, at the upper most part, it is containing small agglutinated
forams that indicating brackish water depositional environment.

KM 46.50 BALIKPAPAN-SAMARINDA BY PASS ROAD CREVASSE SPLAY
These outcrop is the last outcrop in third day and was located at highway
connection Balikpapan and Samarinda at KM 46.5. It was a low angle slope built up by
predominantly mudstone of flood-plain deposits, interbedded with coals and minor
sandstone lenses. This outcrop is the “famous” crevasse splay typical example “found”
by the late George Allen to illustrate the ancient Mahakam Delta that was different from
the modern one, because no crevasse splays (and levees) were found in the modern
Mahakam Delta setting.
The sandstone bed has lenticular form sandwiched by 2 coal seams which merge
into one single seam at the both ends of the lenses. The sandstone is fine to medium
grained, muddy, carbonaceous laminae, with climbing ripples and small scale slump
structures. A vague coarsening upward characteristic is noted, but in general it shows a
blocky appearance. The longitudinal sandstone lense has a dimension of a maximum 1
meter thick and 50 meters length.

Currently, the location of the Mathilda B-1 Well is at Semayang Seaport and
Pertamina refinery. This well is one of the oil and gas exploration well that was drilled
in Kutai Basin and the first field in Balikpapan area. This well was drilled at 1897 and its
TD was 222 meters. Its production was 184 barrels/day, then plug and abandoned at
1903 with cummulative production was 68375 barrels.
The position of Mathilda well in crest from Antiklin Klandasa, so in the
past this location very prospect to accumulation hydricarbon.

The outcrop is located in a river (valley) on the east side of Jl. Batam-1 Gunung
Pancur area, Balikpapan. It is in the Mentawir Formation, Balikpapan Group (Marks, et
al., 1982) or in the Wain Basin nomenclature: the Klandasan Formation. Mr . Andang
said that correlated to Bongkaran-1 stratigraphy terminology.
The Klandasan sandstone developed in this location shows thick beddings of fine
grained to medium grained sandstone with some indications of cross bedding. In the
subsurface, this sandstone may develop as thick as 3000 feet (920 m) with only minor
shale interbeds.
It has been long time debated whether the outcropping Klandasan (Mentawir)
sandstone has marine environment indication or not, because of its well-sorted, clean,
and thick appearances. Since there are no definite marine indications (fossils,
sedimentary structures), the section has been re-interpreted using well correlations and
seismic to be a fluvial deposition in a braided river complex.

The outcrop is located behind Ruko complex on Jl. Ahmad Yani (Karang Jati).
Structurally, it is on the northern flank of the Klandasan anticline. The outcrop exposed
a sixteen-meter of mudstone section overlying the typical Klandasan (Mentawir
Formation) sand. The mudstone is from dark gray to light gray kaolinitic clays with
interbedding of oxidized siltstone. Rippled bedding surfaces are found to be mottled by
roots and burrows. Right at the mudstone contact with the underlying sandstone, an
oxidized rippled bedding surface is developed. Burrows were also found on the upper
part of the sand. On the other side of the anticlinal flank, this section is correlatable with
limestone bed (in Kampung Damai area).

The outcrop in this location used to be an open quarry area before it is crowded
by buildings and facilities (gas station, workshop, offices). The cliff of this outcrop is up
to 30 meters high and 70 meters wide. The sand body geometry which exhibit lenticular
and sometimes sigmoid shapes is very pronounced in this outcrop. The finer grain size
sections usually show clay drapes, and clay doublets. Burrows are rarely found in this
outcrop. The overall sand characteristics are coarsening upward. Participants are urged
to differentiate the tidal versus fluvial processes in this outcrop and also to look at the
vertical trend within the individual beds.

ACTIVITY SUMMARY
UNPAD Student Chapter of AAPG and HMG UNPAD had a great course about
“Basement Fracture”. It’s so important for us. The lecturers gave us a huge quality
courses. They gave us a basic definition of fracture that could be the basic science for us
to join the oil industry world as a good geoscientist. In this One Day Course, the
lecturers presented the excellent and interested topic.

Participants was enthusiasticly listening Mr. Joel Guttormsen’s explaination
At 12.00 we take a break. After break and lunch, we continue the lecture. He
explained the development of the fracture, just like about fracture reservoir. Reservoirs
in fractured basements, where the oil and gas in place may be held within an extensive
fracture network on a variety of different scales rather than within the matrix porosity
of the formation, present challenging problems to the petrophysicist and reservoir
engineer. Fractured reservoirs are much more difficult and expensive to evaluate than
the more conventional reservoirs

ACTIVITY SUMMARY
UNPAD Student Chapter of AAPG and HMG UNPAD had a course about
“Introduction to Geosteering”. It’s so interesting for us. The lecturers gave us a superb
quality courses. They gave us a basic definition of fracture that could be the basic

science for us to join the oil industry world as a good geoscientist. In this One Day
Course, the lecturers presented the excellent and interested topic.
The Distinguished Lecture was successfully conducted, about 45 peoples attend
in this lecture.. Most of all participant interested & satisfied with explanation about
Basement Fracture.
The lecture presenter by Mr. Sanggam Hutabarat. For the introduction, he
showed us about the petroleum industry, how it still important for many years later,
and how the new technology makes many exploration and extraction were impossible
become possible now. And one of the technologies is the geosteering itself. He
explained the geosteering as an act of adjusting the borehole position to make a
directional drilling that combined with information of subsurface geological model. The
goal is to hit geological target within prescribed deviations errors.
Mr. Sanggam Hutabarat taught us about Geosteering

Participants was enthusiasticly listening Mr. Sanggam Hutabarat’s explaination
He also explained that geologically, the geosteering method is actually difficult.
The drilling cost is higher, the drilling difficulty is higher, and the stratigraphy
information given is confusing, and other disadvantages. A decision to make directional
drilling must be well considerated. If the geosteering exactly planned, we might recover
more oil than confessional drilling.
