Ambition

Definition
The desire to achieve something, or to succeed, accompanied with motivation,
determination and an internal drive.
Ambition describes those that achieve success based on their inner desire to do so
and their belief in themselves. Ambition in itself may not be a key to success.
Successful, ambitious people need both energy and goals to succeed. Someone with
plenty of energy but no goals may find themselves pursuing one opportunity after
another without success, wondering what it is that they are wanting out of life.
Ambition also requires using failures to learn from their mistakes.

Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be
continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to
attain a goal.
Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors
such as the intensity of desire or need, incentive or reward value of the goal, and
expectations of the individual and of his or her peers. These factors are the reasons
one has for behaving a certain way. An example is a student that spends extra time
studying for a test because he or she wants a better grade in the class.

1.2 Importance in general
Ambition
Ambition is not a requirement for success for many people. Many unambitious
people would describe success as accepting what life has to offer and making the
most of it. However, ambition is a necessity for those who want to achieve a specific
goal, such as becoming a CEO, actor, or billionaire.

1.3 Importance in my life
What motivated me when I was a child?
When I was a child I really was into nature. I always spent my time outside in our big
garden. I helped my mother a lot more in the garden than I do now and I dreamed to
become a farmer. My uncle has got his field just behind our garden and I had the
chance to drive with him.
What motivated me when I started school?
When I started school I was much more nervous than I’m now. School was something
where I had a lot of fun after some time. I always tried to be one of the fastest and I
always liked it when the teacher said that my picture in drawing was the best. As I still
had a lot of time I always did extra homework, too. The motivation for me was to
work efficiently and to do the exercises nicely, because school is a place where you
can learn important things for your life.
What motivates me now and why?
Because of my good marks in school I want to go on to the IT-HTL in Ybbs where I can
learn and specialize on working with computer. After the five years there I’ll know
more precisely what field I want to work on. Right now it is the success that
motivates me to go on with my good work in school, because like I said before I think
school is really important, but I also want to go on with my hobbies. Playing football
or computer games is always a nice thing to do in my free time.

1.4 My personal ambition in life
What my ambition in life is…
I don’t want to be someone that is lazy, doesn’t care about his or her things in school
or in work and so on. I want to be someone who puts a lot of effort in the things he
does. If I create something I want to like it, too.
My dream would be to work at a game company. That‘s because I really love playing
games and I already started to make my own ones. It began when my brother
showed my a game engine where you can do this and then I created a house and I
also made a little, but very detailed snowman. We created an endless runner
together in which you have to run away and dodge different obstacles like a palm
tree for example. Video Games have good sides, but on the other hand they have a
few bad things, too. One positive thing is that you can have a lot of fun while playing
with friends. You also learn how to work as a team in certain strategy games, but it’s
not that good for your body if you play too long. This is why I want to create them in
a game company.
After the five years in the IT-HTL in Ybbs I probably want to do something else with
computers like it was with the farmer dream when I was a child, but I think this goes
in the right direction and I will try my best to get there.

1.5 Ambitious people
Examples of ambitious people
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb and of many other inventions,
attempted to create many light bulbs before he developed one that actually worked.
His famous line, "I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work," is a
saying used today to emphasize to students that failure is a learning process.
Jim Carrey, a famous comedian, never graduated from high school. He dropped out
to support his family, who had become destitute after his father's music career failed.
He had a single-minded goal from the time he was very young and he worked to
achieve that goal.
His teacher even allowed him to perform stand-up comedy at the end of the school
day (provided he behave and not be distracted the rest of the day). Even as his
parents struggled, they drove him to comedy clubs to audition. In 1979, at age 18, he
moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career.
Paul Allen started the software giant Microsoft alongside Bill Gates. They pair had
first started a business named Traf-O-Data, which failed. This failure did not prevent
Allen and Gates from pursuing their goals. According to Allen, "Even though Traf-O-
Data wasn't a roaring success, it was seminal in preparing us to make Microsoft's first
product a couple of years later." That first product? The operating system called MS-
DOS, the precursor to Windows, the operating system still used by most personal
computers today.

Ambitious people in my life so far
My brother. For me he really is an ambitious person, because he puts so much effort
in his school carrer and really wants to learn and study. I know lots of people that are
just sitting at home and don’t care about anything in school. They don’t care if they
forget something at home or didn’t make their homework. He is the exact opposite of
that. I really like when people belief in them and try to reach their goals even if they
don’t make it.

2.1 Short introduction
Sam Sylvester is a teacher at Hawkwood school who wants his class to have ambition.
He wants his pupils to do things and to want things.
That’s why Sam enters a team from his class for a competition in running, swimming,
shooting and cross-country riding against the rich students of Greycoats School. But
when his team heard that they weren’t motivated at all. Some of them have never
ridden a horse of fired a shot. Others can’t even swim and none of them runs further
than the bus stop!
„We’ll never beat Greycoats,“ the team said. „Never in a million years!“ But you don’t
know what you can do… until you try!

2.3 Short summary
Sam Sylvester is a teacher at Hawkwood school who wants his class to have ambition
and to do things in life. After he enters his class for a sporting competition in
swimming, running, shooting and cross-country riding against the rich students of
Greycoats School. The pupils that have to take part at it are more upset than happy.
That’s because some of them have never ridden a horse and others can’t even swim!
Nutty is the only one that is motivated, but she is a girl so she can’t take part in the
competition.
However, she becomes the team captain. They get old horses. The horses would have
come to the knackers but now the Hawkwood team learns riding with them. They
train running every time they are on the way to their bus stop. They train swimming
in a pool where they aren’t even allowed to swim in. After much trouble with all
different things the final team Nutty, Hoomey, Nails and Jazz are strong. They aren’t
the same persons anymore that have never ridden a horse, never fired a shot or
never run further than to the bus stop. The Greycoats team even become to worry!
They have a really exciting competition, but then
they realise that the Greycoats team have been
cheating!! So Nutty has to ride twice in order not
to lose and in the end nobody won, because they
both cheated in some way. But they achieved their
goal not to lose.
2.4 Personal comment
Personally I think the book is pretty cool. It’s a lot about ambition and motivation and
I like Sam Sylvester, because he was the person that started the whole competition
thing. It’s a book that shows the reader that you can achieve your goals if you try and
work hard for it. The pupils in the book worked really hard for a whole year and they
almost reached their goal what seemed ridiculous at the beginning. I think it’s fine
that nobody won, because they both cheated in some way.

I’m writing in reference to our competition that we had last week.
One year ago you told us that we wouldn’t care about anything…
and you were right. It all started after the football match and it was the worst thing
that ever happened to me. That was what I thought before everything started.
It was really hard work for a whole year, but I got new friends and Old Bones.
After the competition I just can say that it was the best thing that ever happened to
me after the football match. It’s a bit disappointing that we didn’t win, but we didn’t
lose either so I think we can be proud of us. I, Old Bones, Nutty, Gary and the rest of
the team.
You gave us the ambition to do it. Thanks for everything.

believed u. I have never thought that it would be possible to get anywhere. We
almost beat them!! What a great result for us. It had been the most preciouse

3.1 Short introduction
“I’m the master of my fate, I’m the captain of my soul“
This famous line was in the poem that Nelson Mandela had in his prison cell on
Robben Island where he spent 27 years of his life. After that he got president of
South Africa. Instead of revenge, because of apartheid he wanted to reunite the
nation. He saw a opportunity with the rugby world cup 1995. South Africa was
hosting this world cup, but the team was really bad. They needed a lot of motivation
and Mandela and the captain of the Springbooks put a lot of effort in to that, but did
they make it?

Geography
Most of South Africa's landscape is made up of high, flat areas called plateaus. These lands are covered with rolling grasslands, called highveld, and tree-dotted plains called bushveld.
To the east, south, and west of the plateau lands is a mountainous region called the Great Escarpment. The eastern range, called the Drakensberg, or Dragon's Mountain, is filled with jagged peaks, some more than 11,400 feet (3,475 meters) high.
It might sound strange, but did you know South Africa has another country within its borders? Nestled in the Drakensberg is the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho. Much of South Africa’s water comes from the snow-capped peaks of this tiny, landlocked nation. Also known as the “Kingdom of the Sky“, Lesotho is the only country in the world to lie entirely over 1,000m above sea level.
Nature
From aardvarks to zebras, South Africa is bursting with wonderful wildlife! Although the country only makes up about one percent of the Earth’s land surface, it’s home to almost ten percent of the world’s known bird, fish and plant species, and about six percent of its mammal and reptile species.
This beautiful Red-billed oxpecker is one of many amazing
animals that lives in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The seas around South Africa are also full of incredible creatures – in fact, around 2,000 marine species visit South African waters at some point during the year. What’s more, this magnificent country gets to enjoy one of nature’s most spectacular underwater events, the “sardine run“! Every June, millions of sardines travel up the east coast, creating a phenomenal feeding frenzy for thousands of hungry sharks, dolphins and birds!
South Africa works hard to preserve its wildlife. There are dozens of protected land and marine areas, including the famous Kruger National Park in the north, as well as nearly 9,000 privately-owned game reserves throughout the country. Nevertheless, many of South Africa’s animals are threatened by illegal hunting and habitat loss, and dozens of species are in danger of extinction – including the black rhinoceros, the cheetah and the African wild dog.

People & Culture
Many different peoples make up South Africa, each with their own language and history. The country has 11 official languages and many more unofficial ones. This colorful mix of cultures gives South Africa its nickname "rainbow nation."
South Africans are passionate about music, often using song and dance to express social and political ideas. They're also known worldwide for their skill in sports, including rugby, cricket, golf, and soccer. In 2010, South Africa became the first African nation to host the World Cup.
Government & Economy
South Africa has been a democratic republic since holding its first truly open election on April 27, 1994. Natural resources, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing have made South Africa the largest economy on the continent. But problems with unemployment, poverty, and AIDS present huge challenges for the government.

History
In northern South Africa near Johannesburg, there is a cave formation called the Sterkfontein. Within these caves, archaeologists have uncovered some of the earliest human fossils ever found. Some are more than two million years old. The find earned the region the nickname "Cradle of Humankind."
About 24,000 years ago, tribes of hunter-gatherers known as the San, or Bushmen, began moving into South Africa. Many San still live, much as their ancestors did, around the Kalahari Desert in the northwest.
In the 1400s, European ships heading to the Far East began stopping on the South African coast for supplies. In 1652, the Netherlands established the southern city of Cape Town, and Dutch farmers, called Boers, began settling in the areas around the city.
In 1806, wars in Europe left the British in control of the Cape Town colony. In 1910, the British united four colonies in the region and created South Africa. They established laws that separated whites from black South Africans, a practice of segregation called apartheid, which led to decades of conflict.
In 1963, Nelson Mandela, head of the anti-apartheid African National Congress, was given a life sentence in jail for "terrorist" activities. In 1990, after 27 years behind bars, he was freed by President F.W. de Klerk. In 1994, Mandela was elected president of South Africa.

3.4 The apartheid system
Apartheid was a political and social system in South Africa while it was under white-minority rule. It was enforced by the National Party governments of South Africa between 1948 and 1994. Racial
segregation had been used for centuries but when the new policy started in 1948 it was strict and more systematic. It stated that “non-whites“ had less rights than whites who were supposed to be superior. Residential areas were segregated, black people were deprived of their citizenship. The government
segregated eduction, medical care, beaches, even a few other puplic services and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people. Anti-apartheid leaders like Nelson Mandela were imprisoned. In 1990 President Frederik Williem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994.

3.5 My favourite person in history
He was an anti-apartheid activist and spent twenty-seven years in prison. He fought for equality and against poverty in South Africa. He even got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Who else could it be except Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela?
Nelson Mandela was the leader of the armed wing of the African National Congress and in 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and sentenced to death. After he had spent almost thirty years of his life in a prison cell where he could barely spread his arms across he was the first South African president to be elected democratically. His presidency lasted only for five years but in this short timeframe he didn't want revenge. Mandela was ready and willing to forgive those people that had put him in prison on Robben Island. His primary aim was reconciliation and he tried to convince his own people by example.
With the Springboks, the South African rugby team, winning the Rugby World Cup in South Africa in 1995, Nelson Mandela achieved that goal to reunite the nation.

I think it's fascinating that he could forgive those that had put him in prison although they had taken almost thirty years of his life. "I'm the master of my fate. I'm the captain of my soul", are the words that had helped and inspired Mandela in this hard time.
For me he is the most fascinating and inspiring person in history.
3.6 Short summary
On Febuary 11 1990 Nelson Mandela is released from the Robben Island prison after
27 years in jail. On April 27 1994 Mandela became the first black President of South
Africa during the apartheid, but Mandela worries about racial divisions between black
and white South Africans. He thinks of ways to reunite the nation. The Springboks are
the national rugby team. A sport treasured by the white population. South Africa is
hosting the Rugby World Cup in 1995. That’s the only reason why they are playing in
the competition although the team loses all the matches. The idea of Mandela is to
use this sport event to reunite the nation. Therefore he needs to make the black
people interested in rugby although it’s a symbol of apartheid
to them. This is difficult to do. Mandela does everything he
can to make the Springboks the team of all South Africans. He
also needs the support of the Springboks and their captain
Francois Pienaar to achieve the unrealistic goal of the
Springboks winning the World Cup even against the strong
teams like the All Blacks New Zealand team.
3.7 Comments
My comment:
Great movie about black and white people as well as motivation. This movie really is
something special. Nelson Mandella spent almost 30 years in a prison cell where he
could barely spread his arms across and comes out ready and willing to forgive those
that put him there. He is a real inspiring example.

I've watched this movie once and I want to watch it again!

What an uplifting film! I don’t know what liberties the director took with the actual
story, but focusing on “forgiveness” as a way to bring the country together truly
sends a powerful and positive message to all who watch this movie. I loved Morgan
Freeman as Nelson Mandela and hope he garners an Oscar nomination. Don’t miss it!
