A contigency plan should take into account situations caused by: a) factors within the vessel (i.e. breakdown of propulsion or navigational equipment). If the vessel suffers from a major defect such as loss of steering or loss of propulsion power, consideration must be given to a call for tug assistance or cleared and ready anchors b) external factors such as the unexpected behaviour of other vessels or unexpected weather conditions c) unfavorable passage conditions and the "abort point" (A.P.)
C55
Insert the emergency anchorage details concerning the depht and the number of shackles to be used. Call the E.A. with "A", "B". I.e. : A=22mt - 4 S
C58
The abort point should be clearly marked on the chart. It is the latest position, prior to the extention of a transit, whereby a vessel may safely terminate her passage and await more suitable conditions. Before passing this point, a decision on whether or not to proceed must be made. During a passage there could be more than one abort point, usually it should be fixed before a narrow passage, a lock, or a suitable poisition where it is still possible to stop the manoeuvre and stay safe, taking into account the ship's turning circle and crash stop time/space.

C53
