Entering its 57th year, the Ohio Valley Conference embarks on a new era while continuing to build on the success that has made
it the nation's eighth-oldest NCAA Division I confer-ence. In 2003, the OVC extends its geographicalfootprint into Alabama for the first time, expandingthe league's membership to a record 11 institutionswith the addition of Jacksonville State Universityand Samford University.
The OVC's proud past dates back to 1948, butseeds for the new league were actually planted in1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athleticsdirector at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and KellyThompson, the public relations director at WesternKentucky, first broached the idea of forming a newconference. Discussions were put on hold by WorldWar II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at theKentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three originalinstitutions combined with Morehead State, Louis-ville and Evansville to form the OVC.
In the 1950's, the OVC became a pioneer on amuch more significant scale socially. During timesof racial segregation, league member MoreheadState became one of the first non-traditionally blackmid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-relatedaid at Morehead, which signed a second blackathlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961,Murphy earned all-conference recognition as ahalfback in football. With racial barriers broken, therest of the institutions in the league began to pro-vide educational and athletic opportunities to Afri-can-Americans.
In the late 1970's, women's athletics begansomewhat of a rebirth on the national scene as theNCAA began sponsoring and marketing women'ssports. Recognizing the need to provide increasedopportunities for female athletes, the OVC estab-lished women's championships in the sports of bas-ketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross countryand volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Asso-ciation of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, but theoverall strength of women's programs in the leaguewas demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVCinstantly received when the NCAA became thegoverning body in 1982.
Through the early years of the league, admin-istrators wrestled with fan behavior due to the closeproximity of the conference members and the in-tense rivalries which developed. Just as it did de-cades ago, the OVC took the leadership role onwhat has become a national issue. In 1995, theOVC implemented a first-of-its-kind "SportsmanshipStatement", a policy which promotes principles offair play, ethical conduct and respect for one's op-ponent. The statement has become a model forothers to follow across the nation, and has an-swered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Com-
mission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate ath-letics.
Over its 55 years, OVC teams have garnerednational championships and bowl games in foot-ball, along with national team or individual titles inthe sports of rifle, cross country, track and golf.
The OVC has also produced several Olympicathletes, while some of the greatest players in pro-fessional sports were educated at OVC institutions. The list includes former greats such as basketball'sClem Haskins (Western Kentucky) and Bubba Wells(Austin Peay), football standout Phil Simms andtwo-sport star Steve Hamilton (Morehead State) topresent-day standouts like basketball playersPopeye Jones (Murray State) and Trenton Hassell(Austin Peay), football players Chad Bratzke (East-ern Kentucky), Marquis Walker (Southeast Mis-souri), Chris Watson (Eastern Illinois) and BrentAlexander (Tennessee State), baseball playersBrandon Berger (Eastern Kentucky), Kirk Reuter(Murray State), Kerry Robinson (Southeast Mis-souri) and Jamie Walker (Austin Peay) and pro-fessional golfer Jeff Sluman (Tennessee Tech).
The playing field isn't the only place whereOVC athletes are working hard. The league alsorecognizes excellence in the classroom. The pres-tigious OVC Academic Achievement Banner isawarded annually to the league school whose ath-letes produce the highest grade point average whencompared to the general student body. Also, sixScholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly tomale and female athletes, while others are com-mended for their academic success by being Medalof Honor recipients or earning a spot on theCommissioner's Honor Roll. Additionally, the SteveHamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honor of theformer Morehead State student-athlete, coach andathletics director, is presented annually to a junioror senior student-athlete with significant athletic con-tributions who best exemplifies the characteristicsof sportsmanship and citizenship.
The vision of leadership demonstrated by theFounding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today asthe Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the fu-ture. One example is in regard to the current trendin collegiate athletics administration for increasedinvolvement of university presidents in setting poli-cies and making rules. The presidents of OVC in-stitutions, however, have always governed theConference, long before presidential governancebecame a national theme.
The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the fol-lowing sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basket-ball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, trackand volleyball for women. In addition, the OVCalso sponsors the combined men's and women'ssport of rifle.
Over the last decade, the league has grown, not only in the number of athletics opportunities it
provides for students, but in terms of the number ofinstitutions in the conference. In 2003, JacksonvilleState University and Samford University becamethe newest members of the OVC, joining SoutheastMissouri State University (1991), the University ofTennessee at Martin (1992) and Eastern IllinoisUniversity (1996) as the league's most recent ad-ditions. Other current representatives include char-ter members Eastern Kentucky University,Morehead State University and Murray State Uni-versity, along with Austin Peay State University,Tennessee State University and Tennessee Tech-nological University.

Austin Peay Athletics Mission
Governors Park officially became Raymond C. Hand Park, March 27,1993, in a special dedication ceremony. The park was renamed in honor ofthe late Clarksville business and civic leader, Raymond C. Hand, known as agreat baseball enthusiast.
His son, Charles Hand, owner of Ideal Distributing, Co., donated $25,000to kick off the baseball field light campaign in 1993 and initiate night-time Gov-ernors baseball. The park renovations didn’t stop with the lighting project.
Again with Charles Hand’s lead (an-other $25,000 donation), the previ-ous concrete structure used for seat-ing was replaced by state-of-the-art seating—chairbacks as well as bleach-ers—increasing the total capacity to more than 1,000.
Raymond C. Hand Park also served as the former home of the ClarksvilleCoyotes, a now defunct Class A independent minor league team. A spirit ofcooperation between tenants Austin Peay and the Coyotes led to a myriad ofstadium improvements–new ticket booths, souvenir stand, concession standand restrooms. As a result, Raymond C. Park has become one of the region’sfinest baseball facilities. It provides Governors fans, young and old, an oppor-tunity to watch highly competitive Division I baseball in a comfortable atmo-sphere. Raymond C. Hand Park hosted the Ohio Valley Conference baseballtournament in 1994.
Other recent improve-ments to Raymond C. HandPark include an in-ground ir-rigation system, new fencingalong each sideline and, com-pleted during the winter of2001, the addition of brick fac-ing to the backstop andentryway to the park.
Austin Peay’s baseball team has been in its current location sincethe 1970 season. Prior to that season, the Governors called manycampus locations home including the current intramural fields locatedsouth of the Dunn Center.
