Types of activities of organization

Radio ABC is an undertaking of Chetana Nepal (a registered Media NGO who owns the broadcast licence of the Radio ABC). This Radio aims to help propagate information at the community level in order to promote education, democracy, sustainable development, human rights and other national issues through participatory communication. It is essential that communities deal with national issues in a local platform with local language and setting in order to bring about ownership and involvement in those issues.

The vision of Radio ABC is to help communities develop and manage area-specific communication programs. Such programs would provide a forum for communities to discuss issues and opinions in a regional setting and style. This, in effect, would provide a two-way communication medium, by giving communities a voice into national-level matters. This means of information sharing and participatory communication will help promote advocacy on various development issues, which community otherwise would be detached from. The establishment of Radio ABC could introduce a wide range of cultural, social and educational programs.

Moreover, the stations would allow the dissemination of local news, as well as providing a connection with nation-wide programs, effectively linking these communities to the rest of the world. Programs such as distant education, political debates, and local entertainment are now possible with the introduction of the stations.

Types of activities of organization

Lack of communication network and negligible impact of national media in Karnali district - the least developed district of the country- led the local NGO Karnali Integrated Rural Development and Research Centre (KIRDARC) to establish the Community Radio Karnali FM 05.2 MHz in Jumla district for the first time in July, 2004. Radio Karnali is motivated by community well being and is purely operated in the community, for the community, about the community and by the community.

The main purpose of Radio Karnali FM is to give the community access to the means of communication and gives an opportunity to express them socially, politically and culturally. It provides up to date relevant information and also addresses contemporary issues such as promoting peace, democracy, human rights, good governance, and development, and development, during the time of conflict and post conflict situation in the country. Efforts at educating community especially children and women on safety issues through program on safety measures and awareness at the time of conflict were aired.

Radio Karnali also contributed and showed solidarity for the promotion of democracy (at the time of King Gyanendra’s autocratic rule), by airing programs that mobilized huge mass gatherings and protest rallies. This action lead to the closure of the station for few days due to programs aired against the King’s autocratic rule in April 2005.

Types of activities of organization

Radio Karnali promoted the Constituent Assembly elections and encouraged active community participation to ensure that disadvantage community groups such as women, children, Dalits, indigenous and conflict affected people, internally displaced persons (IDPs), could speak and make their voices heard.

Though CA election was a success the community people are disappointed with the political parties and leaders who are fighting for power and ignoring people’s well being and delaying providing public services in Karnali region. The community wants to debate with their own leaders who were given the mandate to take their voices at the policy level to accomplish their basic needs. Therefore, at present it is very urgent for the local media and media workers to be united to fill this great gap between the community and leaders of political parties to debate on constitutional issues from community to central level.
