WHO ARE WE?

We are Metal Fabrication Technician students, at Sault College. Metal Fabrication is a newly developed 2 year course, only offered at

Sault College. It was started in January 2010.

Some of our classes include:

• SMAW - Sheilded Metal Arc Welding• GMAW - Gas Metal Arc Welding• GTAW - Gas Tungsten Arc Welding • Applied Blue Print Reading• Machine Operations• Practical Communications• Trade Practices• Technology and Society• Personal and Academic Success Strategies

What is welding?

Welding is defined as: fastening two pieces of metal together by softening with heat and applying pressure. There are many different types of welding.

Page 5: Amanda

Some types may include:

• GMAW - GAS METAL ARC WELDING • GTAW- GAS TUNGSTEN ARC WELDING• BRAZING & SOLDERING• HYPERBARIC WELDING

(underwater welding)• SMAW SHIELDING-METAL ARC WELDING

Interesting Welding Facts:- Welding has been practiced since the Bronze Age. - 55% of welders work a 40-hour work week, but many work overtime, up to 70 hours per week. - 75% of welders work in 12-hour shifts. - There are many different types of welding, including oxyfuel, electron beam, laser beam, resistance, electric arch, and forge welding. - The Egyptians are the thought to be the first to use pressure, or solid-phase, welding (approx. 3000 B.C.) - A wall painting in a Thebes' tomb dating to 1475 depicts a brazing operation.- Welding involves temperatures that are incredibly high, for example, melts at around 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit- Welding in space was first attempted in 1969 by a Russian Astronaut

Discovering your learning style:

We are people going to be employed in the field of trades. We learn by doing, and seeing. This is what sets us apart from people who choose the “office jobs”.

However we are living in 2010, as we pursue the career of welding or any other trade for that matter, we need to adopt new learning methods to be able to advance with the technologies of the world.

Understanding different learning methods is going to help us become a lot more successful.

This chart shows us that we need to adopt the creator behavior. As a welder if we are consistently blaming others and complaining, this

could result in the termination of our job.

No company wants to keep a worker who is a consistent victim and not only that but no one wants to work with a victim. Learning how to

become a creator will allow us to succeed in our goals.

A 2008 News Report From:

Page 10: Amanda

The number of Canadians aged 55 to 64

those most likely to be thinking about retirement

jumped by 28 per cent in the past five years to 3.7 million

Page 11: Amanda

Statistics Canada says the numbers of retirement aged Canadians in the workforce will continue to increase

Page 12: Amanda

Statistics Canada also estimates a shortage of nearly 270,000 welders by 2011

Critical Thinking:

This an example of how critical thinking, tells us how a future in welding technology is going to be a very beneficial choice. As it is currently 2010, we can use this information to conclude that after graduation we are going to have a lot of employment opportunities.

Career Success:

- It is said that %15 of people lose jobs due to hard skills, where as the remaining %85 will lose jobs due to their soft skills.

Hard skills are the skills of job knowledge

Soft skills are the skills of being able to deal with your emotions and other people.

This is why it is crucial that we learn about all of our skills, and develop ways to maintain them.

Benefits of becoming a welder:

Welding is a career that per motes new challenges every day. Due to the fast advancing technologies in our society, welders are consistently learning new things on a daily basis.

Salary is another big bonus to welding:

Page 17: Amanda

Under Water Salary:

-Their pay starts at a base amount, called off shore hourly rate. -They also receive another pay increase, for every foot below water that they are welding.

For example if your off shore rate was $20, and you were welding 50 feet below water (with a increase of $1.50 per foot), your hourly rate would be $95 per hour.
