HELEN WILKINSON FEATURED ARTIST AT SUTTER CREEK GALLERY FEBRUARY 2014 “I love glass!” exclaims Helen Wilkinson, Sutter Creek Gallery’s featured artist for February. Yearning for a Tiffany-style lamp she couldn’t afford, she enrolled in a stained-glass class to make her own. Subsequent classes in this art form cemented her love of working with glass. Later, Wilkinson acquired a kiln and began working with hot glass, also called fused glass. Thin layers of glass are stacked and heated until they fuse together, forming patterns or designs depending on colors or other materials used. Additional heating can result in slumping which changes the shape of the glass into bowls, plates and other forms. Wilkinson sometimes incorporates copper or brass into her work, such as the lazy susans she has created featuring metallic leaves. The artist has created an extensive line of jewelry, including fused glass pendants, earrings and pins. She also makes her own lamp-work beads from glass rods heated with a torch. These beads are then utilized in her jewelry. “Most of the things I do come from my heart and experimentation with different types of glass.” Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to spend some time with the artist at a reception on Saturday, February 1, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., as part of the region’s First Saturday Art Trek. Wilkinson is one of 30 local artists exhibiting at the gallery located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street. The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For additional information, call 209-267-0228 or email [email protected].

Reception during 1st Saturday Art Trek: Feb. 1, 3-6 pm
LOCATION: AmadorArts Gallery, 11-A Randolph St., Sutter Creek
Forty years of painting have resulted in the fresh, spontaneous-looking works that Howard Rees is famous for.
“Oil and Water DO Mix” –Exhibit by Howard Rees for month of February
Howard Rees, a well-known figure in both the statewide and local art scene, will have a show of his recent smaller works in the AmadorArts Gallery for the month of Febru-ary. Many artists only stick with one medium, but since Rees creates in both oil and wa-tercolor paints, he titles this show, “Oil and Water DO Mix.” The show opens Saturday, February 1, during the 1st Saturday Art Trek event, and continues until February 25. Rees and his wife Janey will be hosted at a reception in his honor on Saturday, February 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. Operated by the non-profit AmadorArts, the gallery is at 11-A Randolph St., Sutter Creek, and is open weekends 1:00 to 4:00 pm and weekdays, except Wednes-days, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Howard Rees, working from his studio in Jackson and on the road giving workshops, has made a lifelong career using his artistic skills. After earning his B.A. in Fine Arts in 1964
from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, he accepted a position with Ford Motor Company in England. Then, Rees did a stint in Detroit designing the Mustang line. The lure of warmer weather took him back to California and to The Mattel Toy Company where he designed many of the red line era “Hot Wheels” cars. Final-ly by 1975 he chose to totally focus on his love of painting and the unique challenges of using both watercolor and oil. He says he does not want to over-work a painting, making the piece appear stiff. According to Rees, like every-thing in life, balance is the key.
Rees’ subject matter extends to Americana, local Gold Country scenes, intimate European village studies and mag-nificent vistas. The workshops he gives throughout the U.S. and Europe are extremely popular. Locally he’ll be giv-ing a 3-day workshop in Oil – A Direct Approach- at the Petroglyphe Gallery in Mokelumne Hill in mid-August. He’s also produced three instructional videos.
Good to know: AmadorArts members receive 10% off their purchases in the gallery. For more info, phone 209-267-9038 or visit www.amadorarts.org
In keeping with our program suggestions, four more of our fine artists are sharing "themselves" at our February 12th meeting. They are Judy Jackson, Sandra Campbell, Julie Trail and Catherine Woodruff. Come to the meeting to learn who we are.

OPEN STUDIOS: We are gearing up for the 2014 Open Studios in September, and we need YOU! The more people participating in the planning, the easier the workload for each. Needs include fundraising, publicity, graphics, artist contact, the raffle and more. Please don’t assume someone else will volunteer; we want YOU!
Prior to the 7 p.m. general meeting on the 12
th, we will meet in the same room at 6. We can also use any brochures or posters
from last year’s tour for our publicity/fundraising efforts. Hope to see you at 6 on the 12
th.
Aaron Bullock, Coordinator
Hello Art Trek Partners, As you know, some of us got together at the beginning of the month to discuss Art Trek and its future. We had some great ideas and discussion that I would like to share with you. Personally, I feel that Art Trek is a great idea for Amador County, and would like to put some time and energy into building it as a community resource and attraction. Luckily, Maureen Funk of the Amador Council of Tourism feels the same way and is willing to work with us to publicize and promote Art Trek to potential Amador visitors. Of course, the Galleries are the backbone of Art Trek, and it is essential that we find a structure that works for eve-ryone. Some of the suggestions to make Art Trek more user-friendly that came up at the meeting on January 7th were: - Shorter hours on 1st Saturday, publicizing 3-6pm - Featuring different locations in monthly publicity rather than asking each gallery to hang a monthly show. In order to increase the energy and attraction of Art Trek, we would also like to invite additional partners to join us, including restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms and retail shops which feature local artists. These additional partici-pants will help us to shoulder the cost of publicity and cross promote Amador Art Trek. The plan is to reach out to new potential partners, design and print a new brochure which includes a complete map of locations, and launch the new Art Trek in April 2014. Please let me know what you think of these suggestions, and if you would like to continue to participate in Art Trek. I look forward to hearing your ideas and feedback. Thank you, Terra Forgette Executive Director
