Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship returns to Phoenix’s Chase Field Saturday, January 12, featuring the world’s greatest supercross racers, including Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart and Chad Reed.

During the Phoenix stop in 2012, Ryan Dungey, the winner of the 2010 450SX Class Championship, took home his first victory of the season and gave his Red Bull KTM team the

first win ever. In winning last year’s Main Event, Dungey joined Stewart as the only riders in history to win both classes in Phoenix. In the 250SX Class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson also earned his first win of the season.

CAVALIA’S ODDYSSEO EXTENDS ITS PHOENIX ENGAGEMENT

Just in time for the holidays, Cavalia’s Odysseo has added new shows on sale immediately. A perfect holiday gift, seeing the equestrian and acrobatic spectacular is creating a memory that will live on long after the show leaves town.

Created by Normand Latourelle, one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia set Phoenix audiences on the edge of their seats in 2005 and 2009 with their first production. This all-new show called Cavalia’s Odysseo is set under the world’s largest touring big top – a 10-story giant tent bigger than a football field. Inside 56 horses and 43 acrobats, riders and musicians perform a theatrical ode to horse and man in front of a video backdrop the size of three IMAX screens. All families are complicated, and coming off of the holidays, few would disagree. But few families are quite as complicated as the Bowerses.

The Bowerses are the family of NBC’s drama “Deception,” premiering Monday, Jan. 7. The family has amassed the sort of obscene wealth that usually comes at others’ expense. This features people behaving really badly and expecting to get away with it because they are so rich.

The pilot is crowded as it tries to lay the foundations for many stories, but stick with it. By the second episode, the pace improves, and the characters are more nuanced, and by the third, it becomes compelling.

Set in New York and Connecticut, the show opens with the death of the family’s adult daughter. It was initially considered a drug overdose, but Vivian was clearly beaten. Figuring out who did it sets up the series.

The FBI recruits a police officer, Joanna Locasto (Meagan Good, “Californication”), to go under cover and infiltrate the family. It’s easy for her to do so because she was Vivian’s best friend growing up.

Joanna’s mom, yet to be seen (S. Epatha Merkerson, “Law & Order”) was a maid for the family, and the girls were close until Vivian veered off into substance abuse.

“Joanna is very determined, and she has a moral compass, and she loves hard and has been through a lot and has seen a lot,” Good says. “And at this point in her life what she loves most is justice and pursuing right, and that is why she chose to be a police officer and part of why she is passionate about getting justice for Vivian.”

The Bowerses own a pharmaceutical company, which father Robert (Victor Garber, “Alias”) runs. He’s charming and ruthless. Robert is more concerned about the company’s stock and bringing a cancer-fighting drug to market than he is with family.

Still, Garber manages to infuse him with humanity so he’s not a one-dimensional monster of capitalism. There’s a scene where he watches his son Edward (Tate Donovan, “Damages”) with obvious pride, and when talking with Joanna, Robert becomes more than the monomaniacal CEO.

“I describe him as a loving father with some issues,” Garber says. “His intentions are good, but sometimes he has to be devious to get what he wants.”

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present Reinventing Radio: An Evening with Ira Glass on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m.

Ira Glass is the host and creator of the quirky, hit public-radio program This American Life, which premiered on Chicago’s WBEZ in 1995 and is now heard on hundreds of public-radio stations each week by more than 1.7 million listeners. Most weeks, This American Life is the most popular podcast in the country, with more than a half-million people downloading each episode. The

show also airs each week on the CBC in Canada and on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s radio network. Under Glass’ editorial direction, This American Life has won the highest honors for broadcasting and journalistic excellence, including several Peabody and DuPont-Columbia awards. The American Journalism Review declared that the show is “at the vanguard of a journalistic revolution.” Mixing taped excerpts and music live onstage, Glass will offer a behind-the-scenes look at This American Life and its unique approach to broadcast journalism, including some of his favorite stories, where he and the staff find them and what makes them so compelling. The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Any Day Now’

Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt play a gay couple who, in the 1970s, fights a biased legal system to keep custody of the abandoned mentally handicapped teenager (Isaac Leyva) that comes to live under their roof. (R - 97 minutes)

Joseph: “Any Day Now” is a harrowing yet heartbreaking motion picture that is accented by a pair of powerful performances from actors Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt. The new drama from writer/director Travis Fine demonstrates with emotional sincerity the tragic extent to which social injustices are capable of going. There are times when the film feels just a bit too sentimental but, for the most part, the movie’s message and its dramatic resonance combine to make for a piece of entertainment that is as affecting as it is important. The last scene’s many

meanings are sure to stay with you. (Grade: B)

‘Citadel’

Aneurin Barnard plays an agoraphobic father who teams up with a renegade priest (James Cosmo) to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children who committed an act of violence against his family years earlier. (R - 84 minutes)

Randy: A word of advice; do not see this film alone, or late at night. Especially do not see it alone, late at night as I did. I was genuinely scared walking to the car. Sometimes, the best horror films are the low budget kind and contain very little gore. Combine a few spine-chilling moments, a strong story and a very apparent social message and you have a top-notch thriller. (Grade: B

Joseph: Is “Citadel” a supernatural horror flick or one that merely finds its fright from real life? Or is really just a socio-political message movie masquerading as a horror flick? I do not even know for certain and I have watched this muddled mess that makes nary a lick of sense. But regardless of which definitive

genre writer/director Ciaran Foy’s Irish import belongs in, it misleads moviegoers and makes them feel nothing but complete and utter disappointment over having to watch something that starts off so excruciatingly slow before eventually evolving into something devoid of any surprises whatsoever. (Grade: F)

‘Not Fade Away’

John Magaro plays a young man who, in 1964 New Jersey, decides to form a rock band with his best friends after the Rolling Stones appear on television. (R – 112 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director David Chase took me on a nicely paced trip down memory lane and my high school years when I discovered The Rolling Stones, which is my favorite all-time Rock & Roll band to this day. John Magaro as the lead very convincingly presents the spirit of the will to succeed against all odds, no matter what one’s chosen direction in life may be. (Grade: C+)

Randy: ‘Not Fade Away’ does a great job drawing you into the story. It does such a great job, you feel as if you spend an eternity with the cast. The writing was likeable, the performances were strong all around, the production and costume design are nomination worthy and the music perfectly fit the film. Unfortunately, the pacing is slow, so you begin to lose interest, despite all of the positives. (Grade: C+)

Joseph: “Not Fade Away” is an average movie at best, hampered by an attempt to cram too much story into one motion picture that eventually arrives at a very bizarre and dreamlike conclusion. But its leading actor John Magaro – a.k.a. the young man who several years ago sang a song about having enough joy to go around in an exceptional Christmas commercial for Walmart and Coca-Cola – is anything but

Saverage, giving one of the year’s absolute finest performances. Moreover, writer/director David Chase – of “The Sopranos” fame – has an undeniable knack for creating authentic atmospheres, saturating the audience’s senses with a completely convincing time and place. (Grade: C)

‘Promised Land’

Matt Damon plays a corporate salesman, who is sent, with his partner (Frances McDormand), to close a key rural town in his company’s expansion plans. What seems like an easy job becomes complicated by a grassroots campaign led by another man (John Krasinski). (R - 106 minutes)

Stan: Providing an inside look at just what big business will do short of crossing that all important moral line to secure a very lucrative business agreement, co-writers and stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski deliver an insightful story that moves at an easy going pace. This second teaming of Matt Damon and director Gus Van Sant since the Oscar® winning ‘Good Will Hunting’ (1997), he again presents the ‘Van Sant’ touch of insight character driven storytelling I experienced working on ‘To Die For’ (1995). Frances McDormand is priceless as the partner and earned my ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ for my ‘Best Movies of 2012’. (Grade: B)

Randy: Even with Matt Damon in the title role, this preachy, anti-corporate film probably won’t draw large crowds to the multiplex. Damon turns in a strong performance, as does co-stars Frances McDormand, Rosemarie Dewitt and Hal Holbrook. You can’t help but think what you would do if offered a similar proposition. To me, that money looked pretty good. (Grade: B)

Joseph: Watching “Promised Land” is a pleasurable experience - perhaps too pleasurable. The new drama - which was directed by Gus Vant Sant and written by its two stars Matt Damon and John Krasinski - is such an old-fashioned film that it completely bypasses the positive qualities for which it was likely aiming and feels too feeble for its message to have any real or lasting impact on moviegoers. This is a story that should get the audience all riled up with complex and conflicting emotions but, instead, it comforts viewers with its extremely altruistic intentions, carrying no more weight than a feather. (Grade: C)

‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’*

Alexandra Daddario plays a young woman who travels to Texas with her friends to collect an inheritance. Little does she know that an encounter with a chainsaw-wielding killer is part of the reward. (R - 92 minutes)

‘Zero Dark Thirty’

Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain and Joel Edgerton play an elite team of

intelligence and military operatives who, for more than a decade, have been working in secret across the globe, devoting themselves to a single goal – find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. (R – 157 minutes)

Stan: The ‘Seal Team 6’ stories as presented by various mediums, provides that exterior viewpoint. ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ takes an inside look at the decision making process from the in-the-field fact finding process to the Commander-in-Chief of the United States, Oscar® winning director Kathryn Bigelow continues her ‘signature’ blend of intense drama/character establishment at the start, and mesmerizing action sequences at just the right moments, to tell a story with a lot heart and soul. Jessica Chastain’s performance earned ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for my ‘Best Movies of 2012’. (Grade: B+)

Randy: The build-up to the eventual capture of Osama bin Laden takes some time and maybe some patience, but going along for the ride with Director Kathryn Bigelow and star Jessica Chastain is half the journey. The little known details about who was really responsible for gathering the information and the ultimate capture are fascinating information. Look for a winner in multiple categories, including Best Director and Best Picture at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. (Grade: A)

Joseph: The final hour of “Zero Dark Thirty” is earth-shatteringly intense. Unfortunately, the motion picture’s preceding 90 minutes – essentially the entire runtime of most other movies in and of themselves – are deliberately paced, extremely technical and action-starved. Those are by no means bad qualities but they certainly have the potential to disappoint viewers who may have been expecting something similar to director Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker.” The good news

is, though, that those who allow the filmmaker to take them on the challenging journey are rewarded with not only an electrifying finale but also an impression of intellectual stimulation. (Grade: B)

I always felt like he had a real draw to the Stones and that he was sort of trying to emulate those guys as much as he could. I do not think that he has the charisma of a Mick Jagger but he was certainly trying to get there.

Sback and doing a lot of homework in terms of watching a lot of horror movies I had kind of missed.

“I love the medium because you can put your own signature on these movies any way you want. You can make your own comments, you can do things with a ‘wink’, you can do a lot things that you’re not free to do on sort of larger studio fare, so for me it was great adventure and I’m actually looking forward to staying a little bit in the genre, I think it could be truly fun! You can make social comments without being too heavy handed, you have a lot of latitude and it’s a trade off too because for me, the film before this I had a lot more money to make a picture over at Sony, here it’s limited but yet it forces you to make some interesting decisions. It’s the old case where boundaries make you more creative! I have a smile on my face just talking’ about it when I look back at it how this journey has gone with this one! I’m proud of it and think its going to do very, very well.

There are so many fun elements. I was chiefly inspired by Toby Hooper’s original film. The more I watched it, the more I really understood why it has its deserved placed in the pantheon of horror movies. Tempe Marketplace Tempts Portillo’s to High-Profile Site

What a perfect recipe. With the Chicago Cubs set to open a new Arizona spring training facility just a mile to the east, one of the Windy City’s most famous restaurants has just closed on property at Arizona’s largest and most successful open-air retail center. Vestar, owners of the 1.3 million square foot Tempe Marketplace, recently announced that it sold a 2.38-acre parcel on its southwest corner to Portillo’s. The Midwest institution plans to open its high-energy, 7,000-square foot eatery in the summer of 2013. What goes better with taking in spring training baseball than Chicago hot dogs and

beef—which is what Portillo’s does and does right every day of the year. “We have few restaurant sites at the bustling Tempe Marketplace left and it’s hard to imagine a better fit for one of those spots than Portillo’s,” said David Malin, Vestar’s Director of Acquisitions and Development. “Whether you’re a Chicago native living in the Phoenix metropolitan area, a visitor from the Midwest or just someone who loves great food done right, you’ll feel right at home at Portillo’s.” Portillo’s first expanded outside the Midwest when it opened its first California location in 2005. Tempe Marketplace is the most notable of Arizona sites yet announced.

There’s WHAT in My Wine?

Well, there are grapes in your wine. You know that. But there is oh so much more in each glass.

Bugs. Wasps, caterpillars and spiders all make their way to the crusher, destemmer and press. Wine is an agricultural product, after all. Unlike the worm in the apple, however, these critters are welcome in wine to an extent, adding to the special nature of each vintage, bottle and glass.

Bird’s nests. Have you ever drank a wine that had a woody aftertaste? It was unlikely to have come from a bird’s nest, but with the mechanical harvesting used in large production wine projects, it’s certain that more than a few abandoned nests make it into the bottle.

Mold, yeast and bacteria.Yeast and bacteria are a given; they’re purposely used during the production of wine. Even some wild yeast and random bacterium make it into each batch. In the case of mold, every effort is taken to keep it out of wine, but some inevitably ends up in the barrel. In fact, one form of molding, called “Noble Rot,” produces an intensely sweet, flavorful, highly prized wine.

Fish bladders, clay and egg whites.While not found in every wine, most mega-scale wines contain one or more of these. Used during the winemaking process as fining agents, these materials remove suspended particles and, hence, increase clarity.

While there’s no eye of newt or toe of frog (that I know of) in any wine, I cheers you and your next glass of witch’s brew!

Sessionable Beers – Session beers are beers that are lower in alcohol content. They’re a little different for everyone but for the sake of argument, let’s take a look at beers that are below 5% ABV. Many brewers are looking at these lower alcohol beers with an eye towards capturing the

drinker who likes to go to a bar, but is concerned about the potential ramifications of drinking and driving. This concept is somewhat against the grain, so to speak, since brewers have been ramping up the ABV for several years now. However, bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better as the truly great breweries are figuring out how to pack a lot of flavor into a relatively low alcohol beer. Look for more of these in 2013.

BEER 101: Gateway Brews for New Beer Drinkers! BY “KING” JAMES SWANN

Hello again craft beer lovers, 2013 is almost upon us and I’m hoping over the past year our little group has grown. It’s great to think we belong to our own private club but the truth is we need to make progress, we need new converts. I have been quoted many times as saying “we are the nextSan Diego” but that won’t happen unless we show new drinkers the gateway and teach them the holy gospel of craft beer. Having said so here is a list of places to start.

Four Peaks Brewing now with three locations in the valley has several gateway or starter beers to help newbies begin their ascension. My favorite is the English Bitter or Pale Ale style called 8th Street Ale. Amber in colour, smooth and easy drinking with just a hint of hop character for balance this beer is the perfect launching pad.

Next up, SanTan Brewing in Chandler has a wonderful American Amber called Epicenter. Very low bitterness, lots of malt and a touch of earthy nutty character makes this little gem a must for those light beer drinkers seeking something more. Most importantly, SanTan makes Epicenter available in cans at your favorite local grocer so you can begin your beer journey in the comfort of your own home. How cool is that?

From there the choice is easy. World of Beer in downtown Tempe is the perfect destination for beginners and pros alike. With more than 50 beers on tap and over 500 bottles to choose from, there is always something to please everyone. The most important aspect is every staff member has had extensive training to answer any question a new beer apprentice might have. Now that is cool!

In the rush to capture new markets or to gain more popularity in existing markets, many brewers were plying the craft bars, especially those with rotating handles, with their specialty brands hoping that it would create interest in their core brands, the ones that actually make money for the brewery. Don’t worry, the breweries will still be making these amazingly big beers and offering them up. Because they are correct in the assumption that these rarer beers do translate to sales of their core items. The big difference is that you can expect to see the breweries be more careful about offering these allocated items up the bars that support their core brands. After all, no business can stay alive if it only sells its special items.

Expect to See Some New Breweries in the Market – With a market like Arizona that is finally embracing craft beer at more mainstream bars and restaurants, it is inevitable that breweries will want to come here. Of course, there are a lot of other markets that are doing the same thing. Many breweries see Las Vegas as a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the craft beer boom there. There are certainly other markets that are also seen in this very desirable light.

That said, expect to see a lot of smaller breweries enter the market and maybe a two or three breweries that are on the Brewers’ Association Fifty Largest list. Either way, expect to see a fight for shelf space.

You Can Also Expect to See Some Breweries Leave the Market – At the end of the day there are breweries that aren’t going to cut it for a variety of reasons. Some will have poor quality, some will have poor business practices, and some will think that they can get by without any kind of presence, even an occasional one, in the state. Most of the breweries that leave won’t be missed as they will have limited sales and probably an even smaller number of faithful drinkers. Some of these breweries will just be dropped by their distributors and not picked up by another.

Expect a Lot of New Breweries to Open in the State – No secret here…with what we have seen already in 2012, and the breweries that have already announced an opening date in 2013, Arizona Brewing will expand rapidly. Fate Brewing is already gaining a nice following up at Scottsdale and Shea, as is THAT Brewery in Pine and Dragoon in Tucson. We already know of a large handful that will

brew their first batch in the New Year. These include Huss Brewing (the namesake brewery of head brewer Jeff Huss, a multiple medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival), Arizona Wilderness, Freak’N Brewing Company (finally showing the West Side some brewery love), North Mountain, and quite a few more will be coming our way.

Sadly, Expect a Couple of Closures – It is inevitable but we will see some breweries shutter their doors this year. But don’t worry, this is not the beginning of a big shakeout; it is just the market dictating who stays and who goes. While we may lose some good beer, expect the brewers to re-surface elsewhere with their recipes intact.

Wild Ales – Another trend within a trend. Wild ales are all about flavor and that is what the craft drinker demands. Look for bizarre yeasts and other bugs with names like Brettanomyces, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus to show up in more beers providing some fascinating, and sometimes funky, flavors that will pucker your mouth and tickle your taste buds. This is a trend that has been slowly emerging for the

past couple of years but look for it to explode in 2013.

Belgians are Back – And not just lighter Belgians like Wits and Lagers. Full flavored Belgian Ales with names like Gulden Draak, TripelKarmeliet and St. Bernardus will be at the forefront, but an interest in smaller breweries in this beer mecca will emerge. Time to familiarize yourself with Dubbels and Tripels, Lambics and Gueuze, the difference between a Flanders Red and a Flanders Bruin (hint – it usually has to do with the part of the country and the aging medium) and what makes a beer a Trappist Ale. We got a little taste of this recently when Total Wine offered the Westvleteren 12 special six pack for $85 and 1,000 of them disappeared in a day. Since we won’t see that release for a few years, expect the other brands to pick up the slack. Incidentally, Belgian Ales have quietly grown at the rate of 15% this year nationally and at a higher rate than that in Arizona. 2013 is the year they start to make some noise.

be back. But you can also expect to see some new festivals that may become overnight sensations. We may see one or two of the older festivals be faced with making some serious changes if they are to return in 2014. Not to worry, the Brewers’ Guild’s Strong Beer Festival will still kick off Arizona Beer Week on February 16th and it will still be the best festival in the state.

These are just a few of the craft beer trends we can expect this year. In twelve months, we will go back and look at how these predictions held up…assuming most of them come true, otherwise we will forget about it and make the same predictions for 2014.
