Off the AirWith Mark Salzman

Mark Salzman, host of A Dream of RedMansions, a 36 -part series based on aclassic Chinese novel, airing Mondaynights at 9:30pm on TV31.

Born in Connecticut...lives in LosAngeles with wife, two cats, fourbirds...majored in classical Chineseliterature at Yale University...starredin 1991 film based on his book Ironand Silk, shot in China; first novel,The Laughing Sutra, 1991...past jobs:was go-fer in law firm mail room, delivered seed to horse farms, stacked Christmas trees, taughtEnglish at Hunan Medical College.

Kung Fu FightingI first became interested in Chineseculture when I was a kid watching aKung Fu movie on TV. Not too longafter that I heard a talk on Chinesephilosophy. That got me interestedin the whole philosophicalbackground that martial arts andother Chinese art comes out of. So I gota job at a Chinese restaurant and triedto learn Chinese from the waiters.

Is That Enlightenment?I had this idea that if I could justunderstand Chinese philosophy, lifewould make sense for me and all of asudden all of the doubts and angst ofadolescence would be less painful. My idea was that if I could just getenlightened, I would get dates. I wasa typical suburban kid who felt thathe was mediocre and boring. I grewup on TV dinners and watching TheFlintstones and six hours of televisiona day. So I think around the age of13, I was just anxious to be moreinteresting.

Comic impressionsMy impressions of modern Chinawere pretty much based on readingthe Doonesbury comic strip. I

imagined it would be like a giantpenal colony-a giant junior highschool cafeteria with loudspeakersand political meetings and rallies. Infact it was that way, but not as badas I thought. It was probably the bestcouple of years of my life although Iwas homesick the whole time.

Love That DecadenceI love the book that A Dream of RedMansions is based on. I love theoverall sweep of the story, the ideaof this wealthy and decadent familythat is inevitably going to collapseunder its own waste and inertia. It iscertainly China's greatest novel. Thebook is so much a part of theirculture that for us to see itperformed is a great step towardunderstanding how Chinese seethemselves and their culture. And,it's a great tragic love story.

Fresh ZenWhen I was a kid and I read my firstZen book, I thought, "Wow! This isso much better than anything elseI've ever read." Whenever anythingis different and fresh it always hasthe potential to seem vastly superiorto what you have at home. Now Ifeel that it's just a great intellectualpursuit. It always provides me withnew questions and new ways oflooking at things, as science does, ormy backyard barbecues.
